AGP & PCI Express Graphic's cards ---help!Follow

#1 Nov 22 2008 at 9:15 PM Rating: Decent
So earlier today I received a very rough crash course in graphics cards. Having not bought a graphics card in almost 6 years (I got the GeForce4 Ti 4200 when it first came out) I was completly unaware of the whole AGP, PCI, PCI express problem. After an arduous few hours just trying to get the said graphics card, I came home and tried to install it. Guess what?

I have an AGP slot. It was a PCI (Geforce 8400) card. Did not work well. Now, onto my actual question.

tl;dr

Will a PCI express card (geforce 8500 gt) fit in an AGP slot?
How about a geforce 9800?

No, a PCI-Express card will not work in a AGP slot.

A geforce 9800 is usually PCI-Express card

Look here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069609639&name=AGP%204X%2f8X

These are all AGP cards, one I would suggest : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161207

AGP, PCI, and PCI Express are all different slot types.

You _can_ use a PCI card in your computer, but you will miss out on the benefits of having a dedicated graphics slot.

Since you don't have PCI Express, AGP is your best option. I was in the same boat not too long ago, just got a 6800 from eBay for ~$40.

Alternatively, you could use this as an opportunity to upgrade your computer. New CPU, mobo, ram, PCI Express card and you could be sitting with a new computer.

It would be at least $200 to upgrade all those components, and it will provide a big performance boost.

Or you could just punch yourself in the balls.

It's new computer time. Really. Spending $100 on an AGP card is like spending $4,000 to upgrade your 74 Dodge Dart's AC.

Greetings Stalebread,

You can get some decent AGP video cards still. I would recommend this one:

As the others have so eloquently said here :), I would also recommend consideration for a new PC. My System Performance Guide may help you in this regard, and I would be happy to suggest a PC build as well:

Take a look at this Graphics Processor Unit article that describes the differences you are encountering:

Cheers,
Berek
