Adding a processorFollow

#1 Oct 12 2008 at 8:17 PM Rating: Decent
I hope this is the right place ot post this question. If not, my apologies.<g>

I have a two socket motherboard with only one processor socket populated. If I add a processor will I need to reinstall Windows XP Pro? I don't know if it is like NT was with a separate multiprocessor build.

Thanks!

I doubt it. My experience of twin-cpu motherboards is limited to what I've read in magazines but having changed the one and only cpu on my motherboard, it didn't ask for a reinstall. In fact, the only time I've had to reinstall due to a hardware change, it was from installing a new motherboard.

Did you go from 1 to 2 processors as I am doing? If so that is nice not having to reinstall.

Thanks for the response.

He changed his one and only processor to another one.

But yes installing a new processor should not require a reinstall of windows as it is not considered goofy enough by XP to demand a reinstall (the MB has slots for 2 CPUs, its expecting it)

It depends what type of cpu is in that one socket, if its a single core cpu then it might not be ready for the second cpu, if its a core2 duo or something thats allready got more then one core it'll be ready for the 2nd processor.

Goto your Device Manager -> Computer then it should say something like "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", if it says that then its good to go for the second cpu.
