I'm running a PCIe card now, can I upgrade to a PCIe 2.0? I don't want to buy one if it won't work in the PCIe slot.

Do you mean will the card work in the slot? Yes. Do you mean will it work at PCIe 2.0 speeds? No, unless you have a magic motehrboard.

Well, seeing as I couldn't afford the magic motherboard, there'd be no reason to upgrade to a 2.0. I can just look for a deal on a PCIe.

The last thing you should be concerned with is whether you want a PCIe 1.0 vs. 2.0 card. This simply refers to the bandwidth limitations, and in most cases this isn't an issue.
What are you trying to play that isn't running well now? Focus on that, your price point, how old your other hardware is, and we can find a solution that fits your needs. Please include your current motherboard model number.
