Help with installation of windows XP on built computer?Follow

my new computer which looks like this
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA23229

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA21033

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA23394

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=AA51430

and a double layer 16X memorex DVD RW CD drive

I have the HD partitioned and the partition active.

When I try to load windows XP from my installation disks I either get the error no OS can be found or that it can't find the correct drivers for the CD drive. Any ideas?

be more specific

are you installing from scratch? are you just starting XP from a new maching pre-installed? did it have an OS on it before?

Sounds to me like a flaky installation CD, but I'm not certain.

Sounds like you just need to continue with the install if it says there was no Os than ther is no OS that's why you;re installing it, right?

I have gotten strange errors installing XP before, stuff like the Time being wrong and certain files needing to be replaced...

Katie, what is the exact error message?

Okay looking at a screen that says missing operating system. I put the Windows Xp disk in and I get the error Unable to detect ATAPI IDE CD-ROMDRIVE
ATAPI IDE CD-ROM device driver not loaded. Device driver not found: 'IDECD001'.

I've tryed installing the drivers for my CD-rom with a floppy and with a disk. I put in a disk with the drivers in I get the error missing operating system.

I'm about to pull my hair out.

Why won't it read?

what he said, without more info cant help much. but sounds like you do not have the proper sATA drives installed or something like that.

The hard drive is SATA (as opposed to PATA, ie. IDE). Is your CD-Rom SATA or IDE? If so, tell the BIOS to boot off of that.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here -

I had something similar happen with my husband's machine. Thought I was going to pull my hair out. Turns out, the CD connection had come partially unhooked somehow. It was hooked up enough to spin, but not enough for the computer to read it. Maybe check to see if the CD connections are firm?

Could be the dreaded bad IDE cable too.

what PSU do you have?

also make sure the CDRom is pinned to master, have it on IDE1, set the BIOS to boot from CDROM, have your floppy ready with the sATA drivers just in case the install CD does not have the drivers for sATA2 as that is what your HDD is.

so in order:

1. verify that your PSU is nothing less then an Antec True Power 2 550W, or better
2. verify that your CDROM is pinned master
3. verify that your CDROM is cabled to IDE primary (normally that is the blue one, but meh every MB maker is different)
4. check the CD for scratches, clean if need be, replace if can.
5. have floppy with sATA drivers for winXP
6. REMOVE all peripherals other then video BEFORE installing. this will cut down on power consumption if the PSU is an issue this could help. also if you are running SLI/Crossfire, remove 1 of the 2 vid cards and install with just 1 (ONE) card.
7. swap out the CDROM with a known working drive. i have had instances in the past were the CDROM was just bunk and would not install an OS, or some applications. so as you have older comps still around, as you are posting from them, use one of those laser drivers for the install.

repost when done.

/nod

I had a similar issue. I had two hard drives connected on the same IDE cable. The bios read both as being there but I could never get it to show up in windows xp. I switched drives around and it was still an issue. I finally tried a new IDE cable and everything worked just fine.

So... thought I'd let you know what I figured out. It seems that disk 5 of my wonderfully downloaded floppies had a corrupted file. I finally got one that worked and am more than happily installing windows vista as we speak!

glad you fixed the hardware issue, but you might want to read this and put XP back on that box instead of Vista:

Windows Vista Hinders Creative Users’ Efficiency Even More than Windows XP Did

Guess what? Despite Microsoft’s efforts to provide for a more fluid and agreeable interface with Vista’s Aero, Pfeiffer Consulting found Vista to be even worse than Windows XP (SP2) --and of course Mac OS X. Their conclusion is backed with cold, hard research. Pfeiffer Consulting conducted the research based on an independently financed series of benchmarks that establish how Vista impacts User Interface Friction (UIF) and user efficiency.
