About 2 weeks ago, I started receiving 100% CPU usage non-stop. It causes major lag in-game, and out. Makes DSL almost like dial-up. I chatted with a online support agent, and was told I may have a worm, hi-jacker, spyware, or virus. Also that I have two options to fix this. He/She then told me I could either format my PC, or buy Window Washer software. Dropped a link to buy the software, then he/she left the chat before explaining any next steps.
My question is, what is the best way to go about curing my PC of whatever is causing the 100% CPU usage? Is the software the best choice? Since it would help prevent future problems. Are both a good idea? How do I go about formating my PC, and is this something I can do from home? Like with those quickRestore system recovery CDs. I'm stumpped and everytime I try to chat with the online tech support people through my PC support links, they drop a link to buy a product and leave. Don't want to buy something again, but not fix anything.

I am currently running Norton Internet Security 2006, and Webroot Spy Sweeper. Any and all information/support offered with be greaty appreciated. On my way to look up more info. about Window Washer software. Wanted to post here, since my problem may be a common well known issue. Sorry if this post causes any lose to Spice supplies. ^^

I was having a very similar issue not too long again. I have one of the Pentium 4s that Windows sees as two logical cpus, and one of them would peg out at 100% usage, making my over-all cpu usage 50%. The crazy part was that in the task manager it wasn't even showing any processes using extra CPU cycles. I didn't have Norton Internet Security 2006, but I was running Norton Antivirus 2006. I had tried just about everything else I could think of, but it was after I uninstalled Norton Antivirus 2006 that the CPU usage went away. It did leave some left over services running even after I uninstalled it, so I had to manually take those out. I haven't seen to problem return since.
