FFXI major crashing problem HELP!Follow

Thank you for taking the time to look at this post, for I am at my wits end!

This problem started as soon as I unlocked the BLU job, whether this is a coincidence or not, who knows. Basically I can log on for about 10 seconds and then I crash to desktop, getting the "Playonline has encountered a problem and needs to close, do you want to send an error report to Microsoft?" box. If I log back on I can stay on for another 10 seconds and then get the same crash.

So my 1st course of action is to run the "Check Files" utility at the main PlayOnline screen. I find out that I have one file with a problem

C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\42\10.dat

So I let it repair the file which takes about half an hour over my dial up connection and then I'm fine for a maximum of about an hour. Then to my total dismay, it happens again with the same corrupt file everytime, the 10.dat file. This has been going on for about a week now, I've run the file repair utility no less than 15 times and I'm desperate for a solution.

The only thing that I notice that seems odd is that all the .dat files have an icon that says under properties that they are a "Video CD Movie" that opens with "Windows Media (tm)Audio (wma)" I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Being that this problem occurred shortly after installing ToAU should I uninstall just ToAU and re-install it? Please tell me that I won't have to completely uninstall FFXI! The update alone after reinstalling will take 2+ days over my dial up connection.

Thank you again for taking the time to look at this and thank you in advance for any help or advice that you could give me!

Sounds like somehow that particular .dat file is getting corrupted. Have you run spyware/adware and virus checks?

I have AVG antivirus, AdAware, and Spybot S&D ran them all thinking the same, that it could be a virus/malware issue. All that turned up were a few cookies that that Spybot and AdAware found.

I know there's a few people on these boards that are good at parsing .dat files to find new equipment and whatnot after updates. Does anyone know what 10.dat contains?

Something you might wanna look into is this thread. Seems AVG isn't all that good.
