Hey guys, Ive been playin FF for bout 2 years with no problems, but been away from FF for quite some time now due to this problem :(

Anyway, it started about a month back, when the game would suddenly freeze, then the monitor would go black (as if its been switched off) but would quickly come back on and i was able to continue with the game.

At the time i was using a nvidia geforce fx 5200 pci. The freezes started to occur more often, until eventually the monitor would go black but would never come back on again. The PC remained on, but with no display i was always forced to restart.

Eventually the screen went black, i was forced to restart, but when i powered back up, the monitr remained in its stand by mode state.

The monitor works fine in the the normal monitor slot.

I concluded it was the graphic card, i recieved a new 1 today (Radeon 9250) . Same problem :(

Tried the card in numerous PCI slots, tried different monitors with the card..... Nothing.

Now i could understand if it was the PCI slots that were damaged but the only thing going against that is the fact that my ethernet card is PCI and works perfectly.

Please guys, any help or info is greatly appreciated.

Just a quick check, but have you ensured that your drivers are current and up to date?

And does this only occur while you are in game, or does it happen when ever you are using your computer for a period of time.

My 2nd guess might be that the card could be getting to hot. To see if this may be the problem I would try to run with the side of the case removed.

Thanks for the reply loco.

To check if my drivers are up to date would be impossible, as the computer boots up with no display. The monitor is in like a sleep mode, but nothing brings it out of it.

So you have no display at all now? Does the motherboard post, or does it just sit there? My computer did that once and it took me forever to find out that if you hold the delete key during powering on, it will force the system to post.

When you say "normal monitor slot" I'll assume you are talking about integrated video on the motherboard of your computer.

You would probably have to disable that onboard video in the BIOS or at least in windows to get a graphics card working properly.

The problems you had with the 5200 sounds like hardware failure. Things get old and stop working, it happens. With the new card I'm guessing that when you took out the old card, windows promoted the onboard video to the primary display and that the new video card just isn't being used.

Yep everthing was disabled, and i followed the correct procedures. As Warchief said "Things get old and stop working, it happens". I think i'm going to have to accept defeat on this one, i've tried everthing.

Can't get a new setup til around August though (going on holiday). Looks like ill be away from ff for a while :( lol

Take care guys and thanks for the info.

Still a bit confused, but try to reinstall the graphics card using your on board video display and have Windows recognize the new card, also make sure to update the drivers on it. Then go through a reboot and connect to the PCI card. Has this been tried? Just one more last thought. I had this problem before but I forget how I got it done. So this may help, but it is a shot in the dark. GL!
