DVD-RW ProblemFollow

The dammned thing won't recognize blank dvd media. I've tried 2 different brands, both DVD-R and DVD-RW, and it won't read it. Lookin in My Computer, it says DVD-RW Drive but when you put the media in it changes and says CD-RW Drive, and that there is 0 available on the disk (also 0 total).

I've tried upating the firmware and driver to no avail. Has anyone else come across this problem? My googling hasn't helped, when I right click on the drive and go to properties, the Recording tab is there (microsoft article on a similar subject). I also made sure that DMA is enabled (another post I found on google). Not sure what else to try.

Edit: It's a LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner ATAPI/E-IDE Model SOHW-1693S.

What DVD burning software are you using? Also maybe you should try a DVD+R or DVD+RW media. I know it says it does both, but it would be nice if it at least worked with one.

Just using the windows built in. I'm trying to burn data to the DVD because it's too much for a CD. I've tried both types of DVD media, niether work.

Ah, from your post you said you only tried DVD- media and not DVD+.

If you're worried about cost, then check this out: Deepburner

Otherwise I'd at least check out a trial copy of Nero Burning Rom. Windows CD/DVD burning has always been flakey for me at best.

I tried with CDBurnerXPPro and it says there's no media either.

I found a post saying that Windows Media Player can bork the cd drive, so I'm going to try removing that when I get home from work.

It's frustrating, because the burner has worked fine with the media I have, it's just quit all of a sudden.

I use Nero and Windows Media 10 and I've never had either problem. Of course I disabled the CD burning service in Windows as it has been known to cause some problems.

Good luck, let me know what happens so I can remember it for future fixes.

Ok, well the solution was that Windows XP can't recognize blank DVD media. I mis-read the CDBurnerXPPro layout that said how much space was left on the disc. All is well again. Just feel a little stupid is all Smiley: banghead
