Seem to be having intermittent drop outs with my 4 year old cable modem. Cable company says I need a new one but maybe I"m just a cynic, wondering if modems really behave like this or is it really a problem at their end.

It will stay up for many hours, maybe even 36, then go into a period when it stays up for a minute or so then goes dead. Rebooting will bring it back for another few seconds only. When it gets to this *problem period*, will stay like this for many hours.

Any advice much appreciated.

You should probably get a new one anyway. You're likely losing throughput with an older one.
