System specs first:

Microsoft Windows 2000
Service Pack 4
Build 1295

AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (quit laughing!)
1 Gb RAM
GeForce FX 5200 (I said quit laughing!)
Asus A7N8X-E nForce2 Mobo
Onboard Gigabit LAN

I use a Linksys router, and currently have the network configured with DHCP. I'm using Comcast cable, they aren't blocking any ports. I've noticed alot of this going around lately, random disconnects.

Tonight I sat and watched my Rec. dwindle down to zero no less than 4 times, then come back up in the space of about a minute, and everything was fine for a while before it would drop again.

The other day I was getting completely disconnected, and unable to log back in for hours at a time.

Today I was having what seemed to be intermittant DNS issues as well, though I could never recreate them. I ended up running:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns

Then a computer shutdown. I unplugged the modem and router for probably an hour or better, then the modem back in, and the router when the lights normalised. Started up the computer, and everything seemed fine, but like I said, it wasnt.

You guys got any ideas?

Hey ISO,
First things first. Have you tried running the modem directly to the PC? Do things changed when you do that?

If that does nothing, I'd check for any firmware updates for your motherboard. Especially the NIC. Since the NIC is integrated, anything on the mobo may cause issues with it. I've had this on my MSI mobo. I updated the BIOS and the NIC started working properly.

If that doesn't work, I'd try a different NIC. Pain in the ***, I know, but it elimintates any problem on your part.

Finally, if nothing else works, bum some DNS numbers off of someone. Back in 1999, when I signed on with Rogers Canada, their DNS servers were always up and down. So I couldn't resolve names properly. From tech support's end, everything looked cool, but they were running off other DNS servers. I borrowed some server numbers from a friend at the University of Toronto and presto! I was surfing without a problem.

yeah, those gigabit NiC's have been having issues. Is this for FFXI? alot of comcast users have been reporting a similar problem, so it makes me think it might not just be a problem on your end. Can you please make a log of what exact times the problems occur at for a day or so? I want to see if there is any pattern, and also compare it to the others and see if anyone else reports similar times.

Also try grabbing a cheap $10 Nic and toss it in there, see if that helps things

What model linksys router are you running?

Was it this Friday night, 5/21?

I was getting disconnected left and right, too, and so was a friend of mine. I think it was server-side issues.

Becker: yep, around 1am - 3am EST.

Cloaked: I can try that, I ran nslookup and it seemed to be returning everything I needed, pinged my primary and secondary DNS servers, and average 12ms. My BIOS is up to date as of last week, and I'm running my BIOS updater again right now to check for patches. I also installed all relevant patches from Microsoft early this morning. Think I'll head over to nVidia after this and see if they have any chipset driver upgrades. I'll post back if there is. I've got in the neighborhood of 15 or 20 NICs laying around, if the problem persists, I'll swap one in.

Oh, and I haven't as of yet tried connecting directly to my modem. I in fact don't have enough cable to do so. I have two subnets set up here, my room is on it's own, with an uplink to my switch from the router downstairs. I've changed nothing at all in the settings or topography of the network within the last month.

Kao: Will do, I'll just update this post when it happens for the time being. And yes it is FFXI.

Date Time (EST) Steady/Intermittent
05/22/04 01:00am - 03:00am Intermittent
05/23/04 01:03am FFXI-1401 Connection to server lost
05/23/04 01:44am FFXI-4011, POL-0008

And just cuz I can...

With this newest disconnect, nslookup timed out when contacting my DNS host.

Interestink.

Edit follows

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
nslookup playonline.com returns everything it's supposed to.

I think I'll call comcast and see if there's been any issues.

Did your cable TV go out before the net died? Mine did, and then cable has been down since then. Not much of a response from Comcast

Nope, the TV's up and I can surf fine, even while FF disconnects.

Just an FYI, the Gigabye LAN dies A LOT. Just take it back to get it repaird, but I warn you it will die again. Just use a slotted ethernet card. The speed with the onboard LAN is much better, but onboard LAN on any mother board needs some help.

I killed a Gigabte LAN within two weeks and an Abit in a month. :(

Are you sure a tornado or some hail didn't kill it? :)

I haven't had it die again, yet. Though, I'm going to be setting up a router box soon, and I'll probably put a PCI card into my box when I do.

Personally, I think there was a problem with Comcast for a while. There's been lots of storms around here lately, at least the region that Comcast keeps their servers in.

It's not really worth it to have Gb LAN right now, my router isn't up to the task, nor my switch or anything else on my network. So bleh.
