FFXI gfx shades of grayFollow

#1 May 17 2004 at 9:02 AM Rating: Decent
Hi, I've had this problem for a few weeks now and I am stumped. The game worked fine for 3+ months before this started. =(

The FFXI graphics all show up as a shade of gray. At the character select screen I can only see my guy's shadow. Other player's characters are just silhouettes. I can see things like the fire in my mog house, but all regular graphics show up as shades of gray.

My setup:
GeForce 3 (latest driver)
DX 9.0b

I have tried all of the following without any luck--

1) Reinstalled
2) Updated/rolled back gfx drivers
3) Upgraded from DX 9.0a to 9.0b
4) Tweaked basically every setting in FFXI Config

Any help or thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated. I need my fix after not being able to play for weeks now. :D

Any chance the card could be dead? Have you tried playing another game that uses the card?

You've tried most of the stuff I would have thought of. You also said the game ran fine for 3 months. I'm thinking the card itself has passed on. Especially since it's an older model.

Actually, the card works fine with other games like CS and UT2k4..

Hmm...this is odd then.

Well, if the card works well in other games, I'm 98% sure that something with FFXI has it messed up. It's not the drivers or anything like that. Your best bet is to re-install the game.

Arrrgh.. I spent the last 6 hours reinstalling. This is not an easy game to reinstall :D

Indeed it is not.
And God help you if you're on dial-up.

But if the computer runs Unreal and CS properly, I don't know what else I can suggest. Signs point to an internal game problem. How does the game look if you bump all the settings to the lowest? Is it still shades of gray? Or do you get colour?

No even at lowest settings its all gray.

The only guess I have at this point is that it is a Windows problem. The last thing I did before this happened was to enable XP to use themes/visual styles (by patching the uxtheme.dll file) and I installed some themes.

I'm gonna sleep on it for now. Thanks for trying :D

My easy answer would be to undo what you did with that DLL. :)
I don't know if that'll work, but give it a shot. It's better than re-insstalling the game.
