Monitor issueFollow

Kao, God of Tech Support:

I built my computer from scratch 6 years ago and have added new components along the way. I now have:

Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
56 gig HD, using 19.2 gig
512 RAM
Radeon 9800 all-in-wonder pro
Microsoft XP

Here is the problem: Usually when I turn on my computer the fans turn on, the HD spins, it beeps and then the monitor switches from inactive to active and everything loads up. Sometimes, though, and it is an intermittent problem--say every 5-10 times I turn it on although when it happens it may happen 2-3 times in a row-the fans start, the HD begins spinning, but the computer *doesn't* beep and the monitor doesn't activate. My wife *hates* this (she's grumpy) and I could get some major points is I (err...harrumph...you) could figure out why this is happening. It started several years back and there was no temporal correlation between the problem and any new hardware I put in.

Any ideas?

Does the monitor not kick in at all, or does it hang on a splash screen? I'm getting the not at all impression, is that accurate?

Leave your computer on 24/7.

I usually leave my monitor plugged in and when I turn the computer off the monitor powers down and the little green light on the monitor turns yellow. When I turn it on and everything works right the light goes back to green and the monitor powers up. When it doesn't the light stays yellow and the monitor doesn't power up.

Well, it's not the monitor. I assume you probably don't get any audio that woud be assosiated with systum startup, either. What's the Bios version?

Pfft. That didn't help. You're supposed to give me one that has issues.

You didn't do anything clever like install diffrent speeds of RAM did you?

What it sounds like is happeneing, to me, is that you hit the power button, the bios points to the MBR on the HD, the HD goes to load the OS into RAM and BAM! Something breaks. But only sometimes. The only time I've seen that before is whne people get cute and overclock front stide uses or use mismatched ram or that sort of thing, but I assume you haven't done any of that.

No, I only have one stick of RAM. I did change it recently, but the problem has persisted. The problem has actually persisted through a complete changeout of motherboard, OS, processor, RAM, and video card. I guess that leaves the monitor, the case, the sound card, the LAN card and the power supply. Maybe I'll try increasing the power supply from 300W.

Thanks for all the thoughts, Smash. 'ppreciate it.

Bad sector on the MBR. Bam! Only thing it could be. Power supply wouldn't cause that error you're getting. I'd try throwing in a new HDD for the OS and leaving the data on the other HDD.

Does scandisk show any phisycal errors on the HDD?

A HD boot sector issue sounds like a likely possibility. Could also be a power supply undervolt, but that would be very, very rare. How old is the actual hard drive that is currently in there? Also, try replacing your IDE cables. it probably won't help, but it is a cheap and easy thing to try just in case, and you may as well do it if you are going to swap the drive out as smash suggested.

The only other thing i can think of is a partially slagged motherboard fuse, but if it has been doing that for years, you didn't have that motherboard back when it started I bet.
