512 mb ram
directx 9.0b
Intel integrated 64mb 3d vid card
40 gb hd/28 gb free space

If this is not enough info please let me know how to reach the rest and will post accordingly.

I am having a couple of problems...
1. Lock ups in EQ, mainly in PoK but in some other zones as well. Comp freezes and have to hard boot it to get back in.
Frequency of problem sporadiac...every 15min to every day.
2. Have something that is resetting my browser page to browser-page.com/my_home.html (this one pops open my cd-rom drives)

Any help you can offer would be most appreciated, I have been fighting these for a couple of weeks now. Thanks in advance

Ooohhh, that's a nasty scumware bugger program. Try this:

Step one. Download and run Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com making sure to get the latest spyware filter updates after you run it.

Next run a search for any "hosts" files that may have been created on the machine. Chances are they are not needed, so rename them to something other than hosts for the time being so they won't be active.

Next in internet explorer go to Tools: Internet Options. On the General tab, Click on Delete cookies; Delete files (delete all ofline files is Checked); click on the settings button, go to view files (delete anything in that directory) then click view objects (Also delete anything in that directory). Click Clear History.

On the security tab, Select Internet and then click on custom level then select Reset to: Medium and press the reset button.

On the Content tab, click Clear SSL state

On the Connections tab, if you are connected via a network card, click on the LAN button. If the Proxy server section has any content in it, or is checked, uncheck and delete all information.

On the Programs tab, press the Reset all web settings button

On the advanced tab, click the restore all defaults.

Now go to Start:Run and type in ipconfig /flushdns

After that, restart the computer and see if it will connect to the internet when it restarts. If it will, great. If it won't there is probably still another registry key that is messed up. The easiest way to fix that will be to grab a new copy of internet explorer (you can get IE 6 off the windows XP cd) and install it over the existing copy.

That should reset most vectors of problems. If it comes back, let me know.

In your original post you asked me to run a search for any hosts files. I am assuming that you wanted me to go to start and doa search for hosts files...it found five but am unsure of if this is correct.Have stopped on list until I hear back...you spelled everything else out perfectly but I am afraid to do this particular step for fear of messing up my comp. Will await your reply before attempting anything else:-)

P.S. Thank you for the instructions

hosts.txt is what you want to kill. if there is more than one copy, nuke them all. If you have kazaa installed, reinstall it afterwards.

Do you, perchance, have the Microsoft JVM installed still?

Still having the problem?

Micrsoft JVM is Microsoft's version of something called the "Java Virtual Machine" You need a JVM of some sort to run javascript code on your web browser (which is obviously IE).

Here's the problem. MS no longer supports MJVM, so it's obselete. This isn't nessicarily bad in and of itself unless you're running some bleeding edge Java app which most people aren't. However, it does mean that people that write browser hijackers can rely on the JVM not protecting against them and once they find one that's efffective they'll just keep using it.

I'd recommend you remove the MJVM and replace it with Sun's JVM. Like so:

* Start -> Run

* Type RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

* The un-install process begins. Click Yes to confirm.

* Reboot when prompted.

* After the machine restarts, delete the following items:

o the \%systemroot%\java folder

o the file java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder

o the two files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder

o the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey

o the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

* Microsoft Java is now removed. You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at: http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html

If you're talking about a PC at home, or that you have admin rights to, I'd strongly recomend downloading Firefox. Firefox's security is about 72,000 times better than IE and it has other benefits as well. While it's not impossible to get a hijack while using Firefox it's pretty damn close.

And it'll kill the drive door openeing portion of the active x controll that runs from the hijacked page. There is, amazingly, nothing IE can do to stop that.

Anyway, removing the MJVM should fix the hijacking, dowloading Firefox will prevent you from having these sorts of problems again.

If you stay with IE, well you're a fOOL!..but. If you do and this happens again, make sure you try the following as a first step:

Run Spybot
It's free. Update it regularly. If you use Adaware as well (which I personally don't as I think it sucks monkey balls) be advised that Spybot log files will show up in Adaware because of file extentions. This doesn't mean Spybot has installed spyware on your machine, it doesn't.

Also run CWS Shredder, HIJack this, etc. There's a bunch of removal programs that can be found Here.

Really, though, switching from IE is the easiest way to avoid this sort of ******** inthe future.

Good luck.

Wanted to take a moment to thank you before dashing off to work. Have all but completed the steps Kao advised and will start on yours as soon as I return home from work. I believe you are right in the aspect that I am running MS java in some form, I remember seeing that link so will definitely do as suggested today!! ASAP! Hate the fact that when I signed in to IE my drives would pop open and spyware notification would pop up.

Thank you both for all the help. Will keep you posted or ask additional questions as needed.
