That is windows's automatic restart protection. sounds like a graphics card error is forcing a restart. For now, go turn off the auto restart under:
Rightclick "My computer" => "Properties" => "Advanced" => "Startup and Recovery" => uncheck "Automatically Reboot"

Then next time it locks up, record the error message and post it here.

After you disable the auto-restart, it should give you an error next time it locks up. If not, could be a virus, or it could be a hardware issue

Would this also cause a shutdown? Been having trouble with my 3rd box shutting down, usually in the middle of a game. Of course this isn't exactly the most graphically intense game, but ya never know.

Trying your above advice anyway.

Possibly, it depends. that would cause a restart loop. just a shutdown in the middle is more likely a virus or a heat issue. try running housecall.trendmicro.com

Do you ever get an error messag pertaining to the Local Security Authority Service, or a file called "lsass.exe"?

There's a newer worm around that exploits remote startup/shudown of win2k or XP. There's a hotfix feom micrsoft for it, KB835732, which you should install anyway.

Were I you, I'd patch XP HERE regardless. If you don't patch it, people can acces your processor time from the internet, which is a pain in the *** even if it doesn't reach a point where it forces a shutdown.

Thanks for the replies.

We've already patched for the lsass worm, so I'm assuming it isn't that. We did have a brief run-in with the VBouncer "virus" recently though, and hubby deleted a lot of files trying to get rid of it before they finally posted the uninstaller. We're not having any trouble from VBouncer anymore, however it was right around this time the game started acting haywire. Since VBouncer seemed to put a lot of things in the Win32 file that didn't belong there, I think it might be something that he deleted thinking it was related to that program.

Could also be heat, it has become pretty hot here and we don't have AC ... however he has 2 case fans and his CPU fan, so I don't know that there's much we can do if that's the case. However it seems to happen as much during the evening when it's very cool as it does in the daytime, and so far the only time the machine crashes since we've removed vbouncer is when we play this game.

Will try your suggestion Kao, and let you know what happens.

Housecall found no viruses. Computer just shuts down, only does it when we're playing this one game.

The original Age of Empires, if it helps any. Not exactly graphics intense as games go, lol.

Another reason could be your power supply isn't large enough to handle your video card, which is the situation I had. Also consider checking your system and CPU temps.

DirectX is latest version AFAIK, however with all the deleting he did I suppose it wouldn't hurt to reinstall. You can't really uninstall DirectX in order to do a fresh install, can you? Just installing over the current copy safe or do I need to do some fancy footwork here?

Darkflame, I seriously doubt the video card being too powerful for the PS is the problem ... we run an older GeForce and it's worked fine since we bought the machine a year or so ago. It may be a temperature problem, but honestly I have no idea how to check CPU or system temps other than the highly technical "lay your hand on the side of the case" method. By that measure it doesn't seem to be running any hotter than my others.

The power supply may well be the problem; our power in this area sucks balls and we get frequent brownouts and other various power drops. We've fried a record 7 power supplies in the past 2 years and not one was due to a surge. In true spirit of procrastination we've neglected getting a UPS. Smiley: laugh

EDIT: Yikes, I'm starting to tpye like Smsah ....

EDIT: DX9 and video drivers reinstalled for good measure, same problem occurs.

How do I go about checking CPU and system temp? What's a "good" temp rating?

Oh, and now the thing sometimes doesn't turn on at all. Power light comes on but the BIOS beep never happens ... and this is a cold start, not after it's shut itself off, so I don't think it's a heat issue.

May be totally wrong there though.
