2 computers on same cable router playing EQ.Follow

Ok. I'd like to hijack this thread for a short (sure, aren't they all??) question regarding my router.

First off, I apologize for not having the exact details for my router, but it's at home and I'm here at work.

I know it is a 3com router (1 port inc and 4 ports out that can handle up to 99 computers using dhcp with additional hubs as necessary). It is a hardware firewall. I have 3 machines on it now and occasionally a 4th when someone brings me a computer that has problems. My nephew brought his over to borrow my cable connection to play EQ. So he is sitting a few feet from me on his computer playing EQ and I'm sitting at mine playing EQ. There is a 3rd hooked up to the router in another room that is not being used at the time.

Cable connection is (as far as I know) 512 for bandwidth, but as I understand it, if more people get cable internet in my housing area then that can reduce my bandwidth as it accomodates them.

The problem is that I was doing fine in EQ (low ping times, no lag, playing pretty much like normal) but he kept lagging out to the point of being disconnected.

Are there suggestions as to what might be the culprit? If more info is needed, let me know and I'll find out tonight at home and post a follow up.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but boss was coming earlier so I just pasted my text into a reply on the other and hit send... <blush>

That is most likely a router port forwarding/triggering issue. Updateing your router firmware should resolve it. if not, let me know and I'll post the ports to look for and instructions.

Thank you for flying tech support airlines!
