Ok here is the situation, I belive the source of the problem is a Diablo 2 game I downloaded and installed, I go through the instillation no problem, I finish the install, says it's going to run a video test, screen goes black, wait about 3 minutes then restart my PC.

I get to the log in screen, select your username (Running XP btw) I enter my password and log in and get the error message: "This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on, Do you wish to activate windows now?" This is a legitimate version of windows I have been using for the past 12 months. I click no, it kicks me to my log in screen, I click yes it kicks me back to my log in screen.

*Sigh* I know there is not much that can probibly be done, I just would like to try something before I format my PC (Was going to do a full format a while ago, guess this is a good exscuse, but I got about a weeks worth of work I don't want to lose)

If you click yes to register at the begining, and haven't used the registry key too many times, you should be able to re-register it with out having to call up microsoft.

That happened to me before after a Diablo 2 install.

Everything was fine after I re-registered.

No can do, like I said I can't access my start menu while running in normal mode. And I can't register it in safe mode because, well it says I can't when I do that.

Can you log on in safe mode, make a short cut to the Activate windows on your desktop, then log on in normal mode and just double click that?

Start-Programs-Accesories-System Tools-Activate Windows + right click-Place on desktop as short cut?

You can try loading in bootlog mode, and only loading essential applications.

Has the option "start windows with last known good configuration" come up?

If so, have you tried it?

Will it let you run System restore in safe mode?

I should really look into this when I'm at home, instead of at work, since I have XP at home.

If you have spare time, I'll do that tonight.

I'll log on to windows in safe mode, see what I can do.

Have you tried taking your computer apart, except for the absolutely necessary items? (Power, RAM, video card,Hard drive, and perhaps CD-ROM), then trying to load up windows?

Do you have a spare Hard drive?

I've had to install windows on a crappy old 4 gig hard drive before, then I'd make a system restore point, saving all the files I want on my good hard drive. Then formatting the good hard drive and reinstalling windows on that, then restoring my computer to the restore point saved on the crappy hard drive.

Sorry I'm not much of a help, I'll look into it more tonight at home.
