1. Samurai Job Abilities and Traits
Job Abilities
Meikyo Shisui
When activated, this Ability gives the user 300%TP. With each WS used after Meikyo, the WS's, will only cost 100TP.
In other words, You are able to use 3 WS's, after the 2Hr is used. This grants you the option of Self-SC'ing very easily.
Warding Cirle
Warding Circle, gives you, and party members within the area of effect, a resistance against Demons. Not exactly the most useful, but can be helpful if you find yourself fighting Demons.
Third Eye
Third Eye is almost like Utsusemi. After activation, you will "dodge" the next physical attack, that is directed at you. Helps greatly with solo and tanking. This JA has a 1 min recast.
Meditate
Meditate is the bread and butter of the Samurai. This JA, gives 100 TP to the user. It takes a full 10 seconds, for you to get 100 TP from Meditate. The TP given, is 20%TP, every 2 seconds. This gives you the option to SC with multiple partners in parties. Once you have obtained Meditate, your role in the party will become much more needing of your attention. You need to know your Meditate recast timer, as well as your SC partners' TP. Meditate has a 3 minute reuse timer.
Because of you obtaining Meditate, and becoming a WS/SC master, you will need to know many various Skillchains, to open up more options for your party. Find a good SC Chart, to help with this, and become aware of the many Skillchains.
Job Traits
Level 5- You obtain the Job Trait, Resist Blind. This gives a slight resistance against Blind.
Level 10- Store TP[1]. This Job Trait will increase your TP gain by hitting, or getting hit. It is not nearly noticed, as when you have say.. +20Store TP. I would give a complete layout and info about statistics about this JT, but will not. See the Links section about this Job Trait.
Level 30- Store TP[2]
Level 40- Demon Killer. This is similar to the Warding Circle JA in a fasion. It will increase your effectiveness, against Demons.
Level 45-Resist Blind
Level 50- Store TP[3]
Level 60- Zanshin. This trait will occasionally make you attack again, if you miss a hit.
Level 70- Store TP[4]
2. Samurai Skillchain/Macro Techniques
(Note-This section pertains to post 30, after you have obtained the Job Ability Meditate.)
Once you have Meditate, you will be able to SC efficiently with 2 SC partners. You can build TP along with one partner, and SC with him. After that, you can Meditate, giving you 100TP, and then proceed to SC with your other partner. This opens up more MB'ing options, as well as much more damage.
For the diagram, the Samurai is {A}, the Monk is {B}, and the Ninja is {C}. With this setup, the Ninja will gain TP slower than the Monk, because of his Utsusemi and other spell castings. Because of this, I recommend you use Meditate(Once every 3 mins), for the Ninja.
This example, is for 2 quick Skillchains, in one fight.
Skillchains are:
{A}Tachi: Kagero>>{B}Raging Fists>>Fusion
{A}Tachi: Enpi>>{C}Blade: Retsu>>Distortion
Macro #1
/party {Tachi: Kagero} in 2! <call>
/ja "Meditate" <me>
/wait 1
/ws "Tachi: Kagero" <t>
(Note-You can hit this macro, if you have 80TP or above, and it still work. Before you WS, you will be given 20 TP from Meditate.)
Assuming your WS did not miss, you should have 95-96 TP after Meditate wears off. That 95-96TP%, includes the other 80TP from Meditate, and the TP you receive from the WS. Of course though, you would have swung by the end of Meditate, thus possibly having over 100TP within 8 seconds of your first WS.
(In other words... You will receive 80TP from Meditate, because your first WS took 20TP from the JA, and then put you at 0TP. 8 seconds later, Meditate will wear off, giving you 80 TP. Your WS will give you 13-16 TP, respectively. By the end of the 8 seconds of Meditate, you would have swung again, thus having over 100TP.)
Macro #2
/party {Tachi: Enpi} in 2! <call>
/wait 2
/ws "Tachi: Enpi" <t>
(Self SC'ing is entirely possible, even without your 2hr Ability. It does take some good planning, and timing. For more about this, see Delequiox's Video, in the Links section. Delequiox explains and shows many techniques very well.)
This is merely one example of usage of your Meditate Ability.
Key Meditate Points
*)Keep an eye on your mages MP. Note how your party is chaining.
*)See how fast your SC partners gain their TP.
*)These all lead you to understand HOW to time your Meditate Ability, to efficiently Skillchain with multiple partners.
Useful macros, can help you as well as your party members. One example, pertains to Meditate and your TP.
Here is a macro, that gives your current TP, and tells your party that Meditate is ready for use.
/party {Samurai} TP=<tp> {Meditate} {Ready!} <call20>
Instead of {Ready!}, you can use a capital " O ". From what I understand, many players, even Japanese, recognize "O" and "X" meaning... Yes/ready, and no/not ready or not having it.
Now, you need a TP call that tells your party that Meditate is not ready. Again, as before, you have a few options of the Meditate portion.
/party {Samurai} TP=<tp> {Meditate} {down}
OR... "X", or " {/no}.
Many players ask about Equip swapping macros, because they may have trouble with it.
All Equip macros, will start with...
/equip
Slots names, are as said:
Main
Sub
Range
Ammo
Head
Neck
Ear1
Ear2
Body
Hands
Ring1
Ring2
Back
Waist
Legs
Feet
So, it would be like this...
/equip Head "Name of piece"
The key thing to the "Name of piece" portion, is this. In your Item menu, look at the piece's spelling. In your macro, it must look EXACTLY the same. Example is...
/equip Legs "R.K. Breeches"
These are Royal Knight's Breeches. In your item menu, it looks like R.K. Breeches though. That spelling is what your macro needs.
3. Samurai Useful Foods
Your food choice, should be determined by your current Equipment setup. If you are geared Acc wise, then Attack food. If you are more of a Atk/Str build, then Sushi, or Acc, foods are good.
Accuracy really starts being essential, post-30. Pre-30, Accuracy will not be much of an issue, but should not be neglected at all. By lvl 30, from Sushi foods, you will be getting a rough 14-20 Acc, from the foods.
Below are Attack, and Accuracy foods, for various levels. Foods can affect you differently at different levels, due to your base stats, and the food's caps. The following info, are foods that are recommended for the level range, to get the most juice out of your food. Most Attack foods also have R.Attack +%, as well as the normal Attack+%. Some of these stats are not given here, but can be found in the actual food's link. If you are unsure about the stats, please click on the link, to see all of the exact stats.
(Note-These are only recommended. You need not to strictly follow these patterns.)

4. Samurai Subjob Guide/FAQ's
When choosing a subjob, you should never base your decision upon the jobs stats, such as Str or Dex. Instead, it should be based on Job Abilities and Traits. It should be decided on your party setup, and what will benefit them the most, not only you.
Warrior
Level 10
You gain the JA, Provoke. This Ability is essential, if your party asks you to be the main or backup tank.
Level 20
You gain a Defense Bonus Job Trait, for 10 Defense. Nothing spiffy, nice if you are tanking.
Level 30
Now, you obtain the Berserk JA! It will boost your attack by a fair margin, at all levels. This JA lasts for 3 mins, and has a 5 min recast timer. Attack+25%, but Defense-25%, with Berserk activated.
Level 50
Now you get a nice Trait and JA. The Job Trait is Double attack. Basically, this Trait will kick in, allowing you to do 2 hits instead of 1 at a normal time. This results in more TP gained at that time, as well as more Dmg served to the mob in that time. The JA is Defender. Defender is same as Berserk, but opposite. It gives you the same boost but not in attack, instead gives it in Defense. Useful when you get hate for any reason, and need a few more Def to fall back on.
Level 70
Now your subjob gives you JA called Warcry. Similar ability to Last Resort you gained at lvl 15Drk. This job Ability is like one "Super Provoke" and increases the party's attack for 30secs.
Thief
Level 10
You now get JA Steal. It allows you to steal an item from enemy mob, not always successful though.
Level 30
The subjob gives you JA Sneak Attack(SA). This JA is good, when you are directly behind the mob. It will give you a guaranteed Critical Hit, or will increase your WS dmg, if use at the right timings.
(Note-SA only stacks with non elemental WS's. All Great Katana WS's though, are not elemental per say. Some may have an added Elemental Effect, but they do stack with SA/TA.)
Level 50
/Thf gives you JA Flee. It doubles your running speed for a limited time. Nice to have when traveling without a Chocobo, or just to have fun with.
(Note-This JA can get you out of sticky situations, if you need to get away from mob{s} quickly.)
Level 60
Now your subjob gives you JA of Trick Atack(TA), Most often used in conjuction with SA. The Main tank does not have hate, instead the person directly opposite does. And you are right behind main tank(who does not have hate) and you use SATA when a WS directly after that, will result in nice numbers and add dmg on your WS or SC dmg. Now,normally, if you do a big hit, you may take hate, but with TA, that hate is given to the main tank that you were standing behind. The mob will think, that that tank did the hit, so he will get extra hate for it.
When using /Thf sub, post lvl 60, using SATA can usually close a nice SC with good dmg. One example is when you close a SC with SATA Gekko or Yukikaze. SATA Tachi: Kasha can produce some nice numbers, as well as closing the Light SC.
(Note-SA and TA, both have a 1 minute recast timer. They *can* be stacked together, for a normal melee hit, or for any Great Katana WS.)
Ranger
Level 20
You get Job trait, Accuracy bonus(Acc). This will help you not miss so much on the mobs.
(Note- This Job Trait gives you Melee Acc, as well as Ranged Acc, incase you are using a Bow as well.)
Level 60
You now get JA Barrage. Barrage is a ranged attack, in which does great dmg(Barrage happens once you hit it, then do a ranged hit) and it fires multiple projectiles(arrows or bolts). It is recommended, to use the JA Sharpshot(Increases Ranged Acc, from Rng lvl 1), then to hit your Barrage. This helps more of the hits land, giving you more TP, and hurting the mob even more.
(With /Ranger, this combo has the fastest TP gaining abilities. This subjob should never be overlooked. Check in the Links section for a link with info regarding /Ranger. )
Monk
Level 10
You gain JA Boost. This JA has a 15 Sec recast timer, and when used, increases your attack for your next hit. Boost, can be stacked about up to 11 times. At the 3 minutes mark, your "Boost Effect" will wear off. If you boost, then miss your next hit, Boost will wear off.
Level 30
You get the JA, Dodge. This increases your Evasion for 3 mins, with a 5 min recast timer. Can be useful when soloing, or tanking. It is said to increase your Evasion by 5-10, but cannot be completely confirmed.
Level 50
You get Focus, a nice JA. This JA increases your Accuracy for 2 mins, with a recast timer of 5 mins. As with Dodge, it is rumored to increase Acc by 5-10.
Ninja
Although an irregular Subjob, /Ninja does have its usefulness.
This subjob will be rarely asked for in normal Exp parties. This subjob can be useful, in times like Solo'ing, Dynamis, etc.
Utsusemi: Ichi(Ninja lvl 12) is a 4 second spell. It uses the Ninja tool, Shihei. This spell gives you 3 "Shadows". Each "Shadow" will absorb a physical or magical attack directed at you. This spell has a 30 second recast timer.
Utsusemi: Ni(Ninja lvl 37) is a 1.5 second spell. It uses Shihei ninja tool as well. This shadow, when Ninja is your subjob, will give you 3 shadows. It has a 45 second recast timer.
(Note for Subjobs:)
Generally speaking, a recommended subjob to lvl 75, would be--
1-10=Anything
10-20=Monk for Boost, or Warrior for Provoke
20-30=Ranger for Acc/R.Acc bonus, or above stated ones
30-60=Warrior all the way. Berserk owns everything else. And at 50, with Double Attack, it becomes crazy. An excpetion could be if you are a Ranged user alot, where /Ranger may help you more.
60-75=Here, you will most likely be asked to sub Thf, for SATA. If not that, it may be in your interest in doing so, for hate control with your tank. If not /Thf, then /Warrior will serve you well, offering an Attack trait, Berserk, Double Attack, Defender, and Provoke for those situations where it is needed. Also in this level range, /Ranger gives you another Acc JT, and also the JA Barrage. Barrage can be extremely useful if your want TP ASAP.
FAQ's
Q-Whats the best subjob for SAM?
A-There is no "best" subjob for the Samurai. There are several subjob that benefit us the most, all at different level ranges.
Your subjob should be based off your party setup, and maybe even what Skillchains you will be participating in.
I cannot stress to you the point, that you will WANT several subjobs available at certain levels.
Some of the best Melee players, will have several subjobs available to them and their party. Leaders will remember the Melee who had multiple subjob options to aid his party. I know that I do.
5. Race and Stat Specifics
For the Samurai, every race gives the job something.
Never choose a race for its stats. Yes, Elvaan do have the highest STR in the game. No, they are not the best DD. They do, however, have the potential, to deal the most damaging Weapon Skills at end-game. At lvl 75, Galka has about 5 less STR. Taru-taru have, at most, 10 less STR than an Elvaan.
I cannot stress enough, to the point that EVERY Race, benefits the job, in some way. EVERY Race, will have to focus more on a stat possibly though.
(I really, really, hate to flame the current sticky, Samurai 101, but I feel that it gives some seriously misleading information upon several subjects, Race being one of them.)
Elvaan do not have much worse Accuracy than the Mithra. The only difference, of Acc, between the 2 races, is the extremely small Dex margin. That Dex difference at lvl 60, is a rough 8. That is 4 Accuracy. By this level, you are *most likely* using Sushi, thus Accuracy should not be an issue to you what-so-ever.
The Elvaan is not going to out-damage the Taru-taru by insane amounts. Yes, he has the potential to deal some more damage, but that amount will not make the Taru-taru look bad in any way at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------
2STR=1ATK
This is a given, as it can be easily proven by equipping 2Str, and looking at your Attack.
Many people go by the rule of thumb, that 2DEX=1ACC. However, 1Acc does not equal 2Dex.
When looking at equipment, and Accuracy, *always* put on Acc+, *before* Dex+. Yes, +Dex *can* help your Acc, but only by a small margin. +Acc gear is the most efficient way to enhance your Accuracy, from gear alone.
When it comes down to stats, you need to focus on finding a good point, where you hit rate is good, and numbers are as well. It can be hard to do this, but once done, you will perform nicely.
Have equipment swapping macros, and you will do even better.
Elvaan- Highest Str in the game. Elvaan have the potential to deal the most damage end-game.
Galka- Highest Vit, and 2nd in Str, by about 4 points.
Mithra- Highest Dex in the game. This race has a *very small* Acc amount more than Elvaan. They can Critical Hit a little more often.
Hume- Average of all races.
Taru-taru- High Agi, average Dex. Drawback with Taru Sam, is the lowest Str. They have 11 less than Elvaan, at lvl 75. This will hinder them from dealing more WS dmg than Elvaan, if both are equally equipped. Taru-taru can still perform amazingly. Don't let their small stature lead you to believe they are weak in any way.
