Hi my name is Pipodo and i just got sam a few days ago. I love the job always will and wont change it. it is way to fun.I wanna be a awsoem sam and i cant wait to be among the best. There is one problem. At lvl 34 u get gloves called kote. Though they used to be 200k in Titan AH's now they are 800k each. It is crazy. I worry that i will not be as good and it will affect the way i play in the future. If u have any comments or advice u can give me please do. By the way i loved ur guide it is extemly useful.

Hello all,

I'd like to hear some experienced Sams subbing war or rng share there perspective and give some advice on what they do to combat utsusemi in balista. Anyone?

Pipodo, you are talking about Ochida's Kote (or similar, its 3am and I can't remember). A NM drops it but it is very heavily camped so you are better off just buying it. Also some other expensive pieces of standard (take that as you will) SAM equip that you may want to look up are: Sniper rings (x2), Haurbegoden(sp?) and Haurberk (sp again). Good luck.

There isn't a better job for Elvaan. Nor is there a worse. It depends on what you want to do in a party. Do you want to be the guy calling the shots, learning the ins and outs of the battle system and organizing the parties damage? Go with samurai. Do you like seeing big, pretty numbers fly up when you hit something? Go with ranger. Just want to bash the crap out of stuff? Go with monk. There's a LOT of different job choices for any player, and I recommend that you look fully into each of them.
Also, don't set your mind on samurai right off the bat. This job is HARD to play right. You have to have a lot of technical knowledge of the game to play it correctly, and if you don't put in the time to research and practice, you tend to suck. You have 30+ levels to gain before you finally make up your mind, so take some time and figure out what you really love doing in a party.

Hello, I am a level 42 Samurai/ Warrior on Bismarck server.
I have noticed that the gear parties sometimes expect you to have, such as Sniper's Rings, and Ochioudo's Kote, are very expensive, and I really do no have that kind of gil.
I want to be a good Samurai, and not go out of a party with everyone thinking
"Wow that person's gear sucked", or "What a noob, they don't have good gear", etc.
Recently I have taken up mining, and am making a decent amount of money, but not enough to buy things such as the Ochioudo's Kote, or a pair of Sniper's rings.

My question is:
Can I be a good Samurai without having all the "Uber" gear?

You can be a very good samurai without uber gear. Uber gear is just for maxing out the tools you have to work with. Better gear =/= better player, though. You can have Ochiudo's Kote, Jujitsu Gi, Sniper's Rings, Emperor's Hairpin, and everything else, and STILL use meditate incorrectly.

Here goes my experience as Sam/War & Sam/Rng.
As Sam/War, u'll have way better dmg then sam/rng, IF you are a mellee only samurai. If you have good archery, however, using updated arrows and bows that dmg will be balanced as sam/rng. Yet, the big point of the sam is not his dmg, is his tp building rate and capacity to SC with any other mellee at any point of the fight. Fot that, you need higher accuracy, which can be obtained by a lvl 10 & 30 rng's job trait. Sam/thf will give you a Dex boost, but that combo isn't nearly as effective as the 2 mentioned b4. Personally, i would say that sam/rng is by far the best combo possible for sam. Some ppl like dealing dmg rater then setting SC tho, and they'll go for sam/war. Now remember. if you forget what Sam is really good for, pt leaders will invite the drk rather the you :D

i Started Sam and fell in love with it. For sub i a, still wondering about. I did Drg which i got laught at. Question thats hits me is a drg gets acc up job trait, does that mean they natrualy have a better acc so its gives Acc up if it is subed? Other reason i sub Drg was for the extra atttack from the job trait and Jump.
In this game some people fear death.. Why fear death when u got homepoints and WHM :)

The only reason you sub ranger in parties:

More damage when pulling
Accuracy bonus I
Accuracy bonus II
Sharpshot- allows you to switch off to ranged attacks for a short bit, gain more TP and do significantly more damage.

Well as a sam/rng for pretty much all my sam career pre HNM, I can say, that once I hit 57 and got sidewinder, I chose not to xp without my brd if I could help it. prelude is a sam/rng best friend as well as agi etude's. my hit ratio at 75 is about 80% or higher at 100 tp. The main reason I dont use it, is that it doest really tp well, but it is good to have when you want to either a) grab hate fast when the tank dies, and you want to save your mages, or b) deliver a few quick finishing blows in the same case. In the second case, I would always recommend doing a barrage/sharpshot to prepare, sidewinder>ranged attack(which should end up around 100 tp again if done well)>sidewinder>mdeitate(possibly switching the last two if you have af helm and even af2 gloves)>sidewinder>?possible last one if you used af2 gloves.

All I can say is this to SAMs, get a fricking RNG everytime!

When I did RNG, I found SAM to be my most favorite friend in the world. The TP buildup and weapon skills of the 2 jobs complement each other so well that the damage is unbeliveable.

Best way to put it, SAMs make RNGs look even better, and RNGs make SAMs look like the best DDs in the game, lol.

Though, used often in HNM battles, as the only weapon skill that can do any major amount of damage is Spirits Within.

I know that statement was made in regard to sam/nin combo and by no means am I attempting to punch holes in your guide...I just wanted to clarify that spirits is not the only ws that does major damage on HNM's or GHNM's for that matter.

On Ada/Aspid yes, in my opinion spirits > all. But on other's SATA Gekko or Kasha for me personally does way more damage than my spirits ever did. For Kirin I do sam/rng because sidewinder does effective damage.

The reason I found this important to state is that my very first sky/hnm ls believed that Spirits Within > All. This left me (in alot of cases) standing to the side swapped in once tp reached 300 to do spirits only then disband and wait to do it again. Imagine lvling a job to 75 to feel as though thats your only end game function. So again just wanted to point out that with other subs..end game...there are other ws you can do that deal greater damage than spirits on HNM and GHNM.

very nice thread but 2 things concern me.

1) sam is never boring ever. ive had to save parties as an emergency tank. killed mobs that were too strong all by myself. in other words theyre far from uninteresting.

2) sam are just as good a DD as any other job. for instance a mnk, which we all know rock, hits lets say 30 dmg per hit and they do it more consistantly. but sam is hitting over 150 fairly consistantly. to me that makes sam just as good a DD. then add in Tp rate, skillchain ability, meditate, and broad weapon use. cant be reckoned with.

but i digress. all jobs given the player are very affective at what they do.

again i compliment you. very nice work.

After leveling up Drk to level 50 i decided to try sam after always seeing sam in pt usually averaging out more damage then me because of there ability to do 3-4 ws a battle where i would be doing only 1 and 2 if i was lucky. Even with my drk pimped out with acc gear. I have to say sam is awsome they do a lot of damage yet can get away without getting hate like rng. think about for like 2 seconds and then toss the idea :>

1) our int is lackluster, we would do almost no dmg
2) we wouldnt get the higher lv magic spells
3) our mp would really suck and we wouldnt get much off anyway
4) if ur really set on making your own MB's sub drk.. at least u still get atk+ on that ._.

This for the last person asking what to sub samurai with:

pre 60 ---> warrior or thief, prolly warrior thats what I did
post 60 ---> thief or ranger, I have heard warrior class falls off as a good sub

One thing I have noticed is that the origional post said that you shoud use meat type food with samurai and rice balls with the AF gloves. From personal experience I used meatkabobs under level 25 to improve my damage, after which i then started to use shushi products to improve my accuracy (which had begun to trail off), and the only time I ever use rice balls in any sort is when I am farming mobs or killing off placeholders to regen a NM. I guess this is prolly different from other Samurai's given their race but I have found that if you don't use Sushi at higher levels with an Elvaan samurai your going to whiff a ton.

DEX doesnt increase how fast your hits land, AGI does. he may have somehow had higher AGI than you did, but i could be wrong... DEX is accuracy, AGI is ranged accuracy, speed of hits and evasion.

I'm fairly certain that the only things that affect your speed of attack with Great Katana is the weapon delay on the GKT and any Haste gear/spells you've got on ya. AGI does -not- affect how quickly you attack.

Ranger sub just seem natural for samurai. I have found that samurai have more access to +ranged accuracy equipment before just plain +accuracy. Plus, you can Sharpshot for even more +ranged acc. This is mostly pre-30. Ranger sub also helps with skillchains and with finding prey quickly.

Great guide! Thanks for putting this together, It has helped me alot playing SAM.

Please note, that +1 ACC is not better then +1 DEX. DEX affects how many critical hits you get. The same goes for STR/ATK, STR increases your damage per hit, where as attack raises your max damage cap.

Sorry for pointing this out, but I do not want people getting the wrong idea, 1 Acc is better than 1 DEX (Most of the time, Unless stacked) as it takes around 5~ DEX for 1% Crit rate. Acc will help you to hit alot more.
Second, "STR increases your damage per hit, where as attack raises your max damage cap."
This is wrong, it is the other way round; STR increases your damage cap, Attack increases your average damage per hit.

Thanks again for the guide~

This may sound like a stupid question, but I play THF main and i know to do more damage with sneak attack you load up on dex. My next job im going to lvl is SAM and i was wondering if its the same principle. The more DEX you have the more damage your SA will do.

The only reason I ask is that I thought i read somewhere that adding dex on a THF sub doesnt do anything. Is this right?

I feel so bad.. my first post in Alla is on my fiance's profile. XD

Anyway, I play an Elvaan SAM/48 on Asura named Deidle. I have heard all the talk about subbing thf and having good dex. I'm not convinced that this is right. I don't want to say i'm right but here is my experience. I have a lot of acc and att gear and some str. I use sole sushi and have subbed war from the begining. Using berserk makes my att skyrocket. I have yet to see most jobs out dmg me(mages and their spells being the exception), I hardly ever miss... except when those **** beetles use there eva. boost. Throw in the tp build and WS and Sam becomes a DD machine. I've had ls mates who went the dex rout and complained that they didn't feel like they were doing enough. I promptly told them to go Acc/Att/Str.

I myself would not sub thf, thats just me. But I do beleive that thf is my best friend. Tachi:Enpi + SATA viperbite= complete pwnage.

As far as rng as a sub. I hardly ever get a chance to use a ranged attack. Although I have had to be the puller a few times but I don't think rng would help that much. I alos lvl rng and know how often my ranged WS's miss. I wouldn't dream or wasting a sam's tp on a ranged ws.

Thats just my opinion from my experiences. But I do beleive ultimatley it comes down to the player. The game has its set programming but if you don't know what you are doing none of it matters.

p.s.- I realize i'm only lvl 48 and things may change. Also, thanks for the guide I did get some usefull tips from it.

Don't ever sub /DRG for anything serious like EXP parties. There really is nothing better for us than /WAR and /THF.

SAM/DRG 20-29 FTW. /WAR and /THF don't have anything to offer before SAM30. Berzerk and SA both become available at SAM30. SAM/DRG gets Jump and Attack Bonus I at 20, making it the best sub-job 20-29. But it is the best sub-job ONLY 20-29.

SAM/WAR 1-19 and 30-59. /WAR is the best sub before 20, and 30-59 thanks to Berzerk

SAM/THF 60+. SATA Tachi: Gekko FTW! I staticed with a SAM/THF from 60-75, and his DMG output was insane. SAM specializes on TP gain. /THF amplifies the return on the TP gain by ensuring a critical hit and guaranteed hit on a WS, and allows you to plant the nasty DMG on the Tank with a proficient WS partner.
