Those of you with high-level MNK or SAM as well as NINFollow

I asked a similar question on the MNK forums, and I wanted the NIN response as well. I'm an 80 MNK Taru and I love the job. I've got no other high lvel jobs and NIN or SAM are teh real contenders.

When do you use SAM or MNK instead of your NIN? During what kind of events or activities do you find a strong difference in the play-style of one versus the others? Sadly, the playerbase seems to have put NIN in limbo since DNC, MNK, PLD or mage jobs squat so heavily on its playstyle. I hardly ever see anyone on NIN outside of campaign...

Please note, as a largely casual player, I'm not going to level and gear a job just for minor tweak in performance or playability here and there. I'll likely only invest in NIN or SAM if I can strongly differentiate it terms of what I can accomplish and contribute.

Feel free to be as general or specific as you like.

As far as MNK/SAM/NIN are concerned:

The only times i really get to take NIN to events is when we're fighting a kited NM, or fast events like limbus for first voke reasoning. Otherwise i usually use it for soloing as /dnc.

SAM is what i'm told to come as 90% of the time, cause we have a surplus of tanks already (as most ls's do). meditate, sekkanoki, sei/eye, hasso, and 1-hit ws's really make sam more appealing.

MNK.. Really the only time i play mnk is during salvage, and usually i'm told to go sam

80 NIN, 75 SAM, and my roomie is a 75 MNK. I've done my fair share on all jobs. If you have 75 MNK and gear it well, you are well covered for group events. You can do reasonable damage against any mob, though the fact that Hasso/Seigan don't effect you sort of suck. SAM will fill the same general role, just in a different manner.

NIN has not scaled well with FFXI, unfortunately. It solos very well, but that is about all that can be said for it. In low man situations, a RDM or PLD can tank as well, with both of them scaling well at higher levels. There is some potential for NIN/BLU tanking, but as long as SE keeps insisting on adding mobs that go through or erase all shadows, jobs with better damage mitigation will be favored over NIN.

If you want to solo xp or normal mobs, a SAM/DNC with Soboro will do better than NIN. If you want to solo NMs, NIN/DNC is the way to go. If you want to kill endgame mobs, you are fine as MNK.

Thanks for the responses all.

I'm pretty certain I'll never level SAM, simply because it sits so directly on the play capabilities of MNK, even though it has more style variety (archery or polearm situational), and much better support capacity (giving TP, providing SCs for bursting).

NIN has always seemed fun, but it'll be a "just for fun" job I'll probably take through the AF storyline and no further. Really tough soloing is the only thing it seems to have locked down as a stand-out trait and it's just not worth it to level a job just to do that a few times a year, especially when DNC/NIN has much the same capacity but also allows tons of other play options completely foreign to melee DD type jobs.

I wouldnt discount the power of Nin/dnc as a solo job. Dnc/nin is great, but what really makes the Nin/dnc stand out are the dot, heals, nukes and especially the debuffs. There is alot of stuff i have solo'd over the years that many jobs still cant, or have very difficult times doing.

TBH, I haven't used NIN in endgame in quite a while, my shell just has no real need for it. It will occasionally come out for duoing Adamantoise, or to assist friends, or solo quests/missions. But I still keep it fully geared, and I still play it when I have the chance. Having it leveled is something that I will never regret having done and especially with new gear, traits and what not, the role is becoming more broad in scope and possibly more attractive to me.

Eh, the tools are simply different between them. DNC/NIN is far more capable of recovering from damage, or avoiding taking as much in the first place with Fan Dance or Violent Flourish - 2hr is useful for more than giving up as well. NIN has a better suite of tools for enfeebling in a solo environment, and an extra shadow. May come down more to the solo in question, or preference. Personally, I'd be more inclined to take DNC main.

Frankly, outside of some HNM tanking, and possibly soloing, anywhere that NIN works well (Limbus farming, Nyzul climbing, or other similar level events) MNK/NIN works even better. Which is not to say that NIN is terrible - a well geared/merited/played NIN is still a fairly decent - but MNK is just tuned a lot more for damage. While I personally don't have MNK high level, folks I know that have both rarely ever touch their NIN anymore.

For me, having nin 80 now, mnk 75, and Sam 66. It will just depend on event/other people. My nin/drk is used for sky gods, sea gods, and working on Abyssea NM's. I'm just addicted to having Stun at my command, for those Oh Sh$t moments, when I need to get Ni back up or stopping a mob from running after the mages. I use mnk for timed events, Nyzl Isle, Salvage, Limbus, Assault. Due to a lack of tanks in my LS. ( down to 1 well geared and dependable paladin and no other well geared Ninjas ) I'm forced by necessity to come Nin to a lot of things.

For Solo just depends on what I'm killing, Nin debuffs usually are the deal breaker, throwing blind and slow, on a mob and having the 4th shadow on Ni usually lets me kill more mobs with less downtime. /dnc is awesome for status removal and healing light damage. My mnk will kill faster, but only having Chakra for healing and /nin or no shadows and /dnc tends to cause downtime.

When I finish Sam, idk what I'll use it for.
