In fairness note that the top 6 jobs are starter jobs. Many of those are no doubt bonanza mules since level 5 is the 2nd most popular place to leave a job (after 90 of course). Of those 6, monk is the fastest and easiest to level 1-5 so I would wager many or most of those bonanza mules are skewing the monk numbers.

I also wonder how many of those are just old accounts. There are a huge number of 75s. The lowest 4 jobs are the most recently added jobs with only dancer (a great subjob) breaking into the middle of the pack. More bsts then sams? I don't know how they define 'main job' but to think there are more bsts then sams.....I don't know if these numbers are telling the complete story.

Also, I still am not sure on how they pick a person's "main job" when they have multiple 90s. Probably just whatever they happen to be on when the scan is on.

If you scroll down to the bottom and look at the distribution of level 90 jobs, its a much different order:

1.BLM
2.WHM
3.RDM
4.THF
5.NIN
6.WAR
7.MNK
8.BLU
9.PLD
10.DNC
11.SAM
12.SMN
13.BRD
14.BST
15.DRK
16.DRG
17.RNG
18.SCH
19.COR
20.PUP

I find the merit choices for MNK to be more interesting. Lots of people out there are fully meriting formless strikes.

Monk was always the best job in the game, along side Warrior. Can't beat that kind of versatility. I don't know what the game is like at 90, but it's nice to see MNK get the attention it deserves.

Its basically absolutely nothing like what it was like at 75. However, its more fun now then it has ever been in its lifetime; With 4-man teams being able to take down Massive HNM mobs that are fairly easy to pop due to very nice gear and massive free buffs (that drop of mobs - atma).

MNK's so powerful because we have some 70%+ crit rate, with massive Crit DMG+, free insta re-raise and 15% Triple attack from buffs alone. Add in a powerful new Job ability, another MA trait, easily cappable gear haste, easily cappable Subtle Blow, 70% counter and yeah mnk rocks.

Time to return and feel the power >.>

So according to their census, Monk is the most popular main job in the game, yet Guard is the least, by far, merited defense ability in the game. And they think it's because evasion is shared by more jobs...... Do they even read their own forums?

for reasons outlined years ago, guard can't be good due to its mechanics. the more you need it, the less it helps.

they could fundamentally alter guard, but why would they? it sounds like monks aren't hurting for defense. forget guard.

Invigorate is handy, especially solo. Any time you aren't getting topped off/regen immediately by a healer, Invigorate is a benefit.

I don't really consider Formless Strikes useful. I recently dropped my one Formless merit and just bumped Invigorate up to 5/5, since I haven't had a single situation in the past year where it was important that I had Formless. I'd much rather have 400 free Regen HP on a JA I regularly do use than access to a JA that I haven't had use for in years.

Even if you DO find a place where Formless Strikes can do something, your damage will be crap and frankly a MNK having formless makes zero difference in whether you win/lose the fight - best case is that you might slightly speed up the fight with a tiny bit of extra damage in the super unusual instances where Formless is at all useful. You'd probably do just as well spamming /NIN ninjutsu though, or going and TPing on some other mob to wait for a chance to do a WS on your main target, or even charging Boosts for a big Chi Blast (LOL2004!).

I just don't get this line of thinking. I <3 Invigorate. Each merit is worth 80 points of regen. I'm currently 1 formless, 5 Penance and 4 invigorate. I'm almost at the point of dropping 1 penance in favor of going to 5 in invigorate just because Penance has lost it's luster. NM's die so fast once whatever proc we want is found to make much difference.

While I agree that Invigorate is useful (as discussed in my previous reply), I wouldn't say Penance has lost its luster. I actually think Penance is MORE useful than ever these days. In Abyssea when trying for procs, it's great BEFORE you hit the proc to reduce TP moves that will cause a dirty WS/spell attempt (I agree that most NMs die pretty quickly once you hit procs, but that's not really the point of the utility here). And in lowman/solo content, reducing nasty TP moves is often a significant benefit for survival.

Honestly the only annoyance to me is that if you're playing with a NIN, Yurin and Penance don't overlap/stack and it can be hard to see when the effect wears to rotate the inhibit TP effect. Hate when I Chi Blast and the NIN doesn't notice and uses Yurin 10 seconds later :P. Though it is kinda cool to rotate Yurin/Chi with multiple NIN MNK working well together.

I haven't missed Formless at all since I went 5/5 Penance 5/5 Invigorate though. If for some reason it becomes actually important to have in the future, I'll just drop back down to 4/5 Invigorate and get 1 Formless merit again.

in a different game where you solo'd 90% of the time and often encountered things immune to physical damage, formless strikes would be huge... it seems, even if they go thru useless patches, penance and to a lesser extent invigorate have the most chance of being situationally useful.

edit: that being said, formless strikes helped you be the parse king in the dmg immunity limbus zone, if that matters to anyone.

yeah only things i remember using Formless on was Alexander fight and the slime temanos floor. FS > 100Fist > slime, other mnk same, restore chest, repeat. Then widdle down the final 2.

This, Pennance is where its at, especially if it only you on an nm, or you and another mnk or nin (20% mob tp reduction doesn't go far with THF's and WAR's hitting it). Its nice being able to bash down a T3 to 55-65% before it uses a TP move.

Invigorate was more useful in times of past, but now we have 4K HP (and thats for Hume), Invig is only covering upto 10% of my HP. Thats less than 50% healed after a ga-IV. witha 4K HP pool, has anyone considered something like 5/5 Pennance and 5/5 Mantra? 3mins (is it?) of 20% more HP could be a nice boost when a T3's HP hits 50% or mainly 25%.

Considering im maxed to the teeth for merits 20/20 etc, I might give that a go and just see if I find it more useful than invig or form in abys.

I was about to suggest Penance/Mantra. Although, I can only think of a handful of bosses where I'd bother using Mantra. I think I'd end up mostly using it for epeen purposes: "hey look guys, I have 7k health /flex"

Invigorate ticks are worthless every time your healer brings you to full health. It's pretty nice outside of abyssea where you can actually see your health bar move, but in abyssea it's bleh.

Formless strikes - I think I used it in WoE last fall. So I may have used it more recently than most of you. I still don't merit it though.

So people are going 5/5 FS/Penance now? I went 5/4/1 personally. I found Formless Strikes to be far too situational to warrant more than one merit. Then again this was over 14months ago...

Sup Nil, [Long Time].

Nah ppl arn't goin 5/5 FS (I don't think). I havn't had a single use for it that I can remember since the cap's at 90. Invigorate has lost its goodness so to speak. Pennance is even more awesome. The only one that has goined potential benefit is Mantra. Still nothing worth stressing overhowever. Whm's just spam CV and CVI on you inside abyssea onyour 4K HP's, so I know I could use another 800HP towards the latter stages of the NM for 3mins. Using it will make the WHM cure you immediately as your HP wouldn't be topped up. I could think of a few situational uses I could use that, along with plenty of fights just to add another layer of smoothness onto them.

If WAR, MNK, NIN are your 3 main jobs, you will be in demand if u return, I can grab you Razed ruins Atma and Gnarled Horn Atma this Tuesday night if u need them or I can hold the pop sets untikl the weekend if your seriously thinking about returning (RR & GH are standard requirements for both jobs as you'#ve probably read). I also have a Bria pop u can tag along for for the boss win + atma. Let meh know asap.

Don't do it, nil. Throw the task off on someone who hasn't done it yet that wants to. Making a guide from scratch is honestly a lot easier and far less mind numbing than updating one that's more than one version update out of date. Smiley: glare

yeah i'd pass the job onto someone who would like to do it. Your guides could be held in place with bolded into them 'UP TO 75 CAP', then whoever makes the new ones can do 75-90. If you do it, I wouldn't edit the ones you have made, let ppl know they are out of date in the title or index and add the lvl75-90 ones in seperately.

I'm sure that'll be the most agreeable thing to do. If anyone else wants to make a gear guide from 75-99 (once the final updates happen) then feel free. I'm sure there's no rule against having more than two stickies in a forum. Actually come to think of it the WAR forum has three. Smiley: grin

Theres still alot of useful threads in the sticky's, especially math related ones, and the whole sticky is the foundations of where we've come from. The formor End life of XI has now vastly become mid-life but losing those classic threads would be sad and a little insulting to the great MNK's of past that had to hang their gloves up due to to many injuries, or the unfortunate MNK's that got KIA like Pahn.

Not only is it popular (thanks to epic heroes like Pahn, Oggbi and Zazzarg), but it is easy to level even past Lv.5. Which might be how SE rated the "Main" by going with whatever hit the highest level first. It would also fit in with the Bonanza mule theory.
