I swear SE are among the most pernicious wish-granters I've ever seen. Skillfully, they have taken something Thieves have dreamed about for years, dangled it front of our faces by giving it to Dancers first, stabbed us with it, and are now just twisting it around in the wound and laughing. And we the ever hopeful saps that we are will be back on our feet down the line thinking someday they'll have to give us something good.

/sigh.

I really don't think they care. They're just in the "oh what the hell, let 'em have some fun for a while" stage at this point having convinced themselves that everyone is going to switch to FFXIV and that they won't have to worry about FFXI for much longer anyway.

They didn't realise this...
They have made lots of people left game because of Ninja ...
and now they know that second highest population is Thief and here go ...

I love what the player base has turned into these days. Back in the day most of the people still posting here would defend SE and say they had a reason for blah blah blah. Now even all those people are so 'broken' they know SE is @#%^ing with them.

Part of me wishes to come back and just see all the changes and how things turn out from now to 99, but I know I'll never do it (because I'd never make it past level 76/77 lol). This FFXIV beta better be @#%^ing amazing and different (and I'm certain it's not) or it's probably only going to get tonight or tomorrow of my time.

You guys are missing the point, THF is going to make a kick-ass sub at lvl 166

There is no THF in FFXIV. You can make a THF-like.. thing.. out of Gladiator with skills from Lancer, but it's not called a THF and doesn't really feel like playing THF. Also you are gimping yourself by using a dagger which in FFXIV is pretty much a second rate weapon intended for mage classes and such.

If I can't be a THF I have no interest in FFXIV.

I have similar feelings on XIV too, but I still intend to make a thief-like character even if it gimps me, even if just to try it out. Still, the very idea that there's no true Thief or Dagger class in XIV kind of proves to me that SE has no idea what to do with the job in XI.

My wife and I were doing the first few stages of beta testing for 14.. And while I know it was obviously early development, I (and maybe her, we never really discussed it that much, which should say something) felt pretty disappointed. I was so excited reading things about the upcoming game, and then again when we got selected for beta.. And then I discovered it was a slightly-altered/upgraded version of XI with a few different systems. We were planning on buying a PC and PS3 copy and getting into it since we both quit XI months ago, but I don't think it'll happen anymore.

Anyway, as it stands now, I wouldn't recommend anyone holding their breath for 14. I miss Vana'diel :(

My CPU can't run FFXIV too long without overheating because my fan is a piece of crap. Even then, the game is so slow- client side and server side, forcing actions to wait 2 seconds before they actually work. That's a long time when you're getting attacked by a monster. :(

Haha. Well ehh, yeah I got in through the BG beta invite and I logged maybe an hour of time before that phase closed and open beta opened. But yeah, beta is open now. So you gotta go in your square enix account management area and accept/add the service just like you did w/ the closed beta.

For anyone having trouble downloading FFXIV updates, my friends taught me that you can go into the my documents / my games / ffxiv .. folders and open the torrents manually using your favorite torrenting software. And it is actually a lot more reliable than SE's XIV downloader.

It's fun, but mostly cuz my friends and I get quite belligerent and then get on Skype and play together. It's good being re-united in that way with friends who left to WoW long ago.

But as for the quality of the game I'd say mediocre so far but I can't judge yet. It is great to not play with lag if you have a good enough computer, since it's not using an archaic PS2 emulation engine. The graphics are impressive but I actually expected more because of all the hype. The targeting is horrible without a controller. There are bugs and frequent disconnects. People apparently have already found out how to POS hack, though apparently the fishing/crafting is so far ok. The story seems ok so far but the voice acting is meh and it was promised that there would be more of it.

The battle system isn't perfect. It's cool having a lot of buttons to press but when you stack them and hit them rapidly, you get stuck in animations just like in XI. So if you're constantly doing something it's almost impossible to do things like use a counterattack ability, or run out of range of certain TP moves throat-stab style.

Mostly I don't feel like I have a good sense of direction in the game. I haven't heard of any endgame content so it really hampers motivation. I don't feel excited to strive towards goals, because I haven't found any goals worth having.

But I do enjoy the game more each time I play it and as I learn more about it. If they can fix the bugginess that would be great, but to me the game will depend entirely on the quality of endgame imo, as any long time MMO player would probably agree, and as gaming companies should have learned by now.

I'm just trying to get other peoples impressions of it for added perspective. So far...underwhelmed seems to be the word that keeps coming to my mind.

As you said, especially because of the hype.

I may dig a little deeper these next couple of days.

The fact that I have to hit buttons any time I want to do ANY kind of attack is annoying to me.

And that's a terrible feeling to lose. I liked horrible deathtrap zones like Halvung and Arrapago. Some of the raids in WoW have the Dynamis like feeling that if you link this or run in to far you've @#%^ed the run, but I haven't had had the pleasure of sneaking around true-aggro mobs that will tear your face off anywhere but FFXI.
