Now that merits are just rolling in from Abyssea parties, I'm looking to finally stop putting it off and meriting my base stats. The problem is that I'm not sure whether I should merit STR or DEX. My jobs in order of how much I like them are: THF > DNC > COR > DRG > DRK > WHM. I'm leaning toward DEX a lot, but I want to be sure before I start dumping merits into such an expensive category.

4 STR will add about 2% damage to all your melee hits, while 4 DEX will add less than 2% to your SAs (especially WSs, since they start with higher base damage). i'd go with STR, but someone else might have further light to shed on it.
incidentally, 4 DEX probably won't budge your crit rate, but if the game changes/has changed to where you're just in the sweet spot of DEX over mob AGI in many events (this is rather unlikely, but again, someone else might shed some light here), 4 DEX would be more valuable than 4 STR. again, this is very unlikely.
DEX is an horrifically bad choice for any job that is not THF, and an OK choice for THF.
You can't go wrong (for DD jobs) with 5/5 STR, but if you are a career THF who doesn't much care about his other jobs, and you are looking to be a bit more economical with your merit point expenditures, going 3/5 STR + 2/5 DEX is defensible (and it costs 90k less exp).

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm just going to go ahead and go for 5/5 STR. I'm not too worried about the enormous exp costs anymore. Abyssea as COR in the black mage party is so easy. Rolled XI on the two rolls I was giving them and AFKd for the entire 10 minutes.
