I spend the day in Davoi opening chest. Just took a stack of thiefs tool with me. This is what I ended getting

Cursed x 4
Electrum Ring x 3
Gil 2450-6290

The rings sell in Sandy on lakshmi for about 20k a piece

Now of course this is all by chance but still not a bad turn out for 1 day.

Question for yall experience lock pickers. How long does it take for a chest (whether it be treasure or coffer) to respawn? Iv read that for coffers its 30 min unless you get a mimic in which it respawns right away. Now in my experience with treasure chest ive picked 2 in a row with out waiting. But at the same time ive searched an entire area and wont ever find a chest. SO whats up?

While trying to pick the coffer in Davoi for my Rogue Gauntlets AF quest, I was trying to stand behind the coffer to avoid nearby aggro. I failed 5 times while standing there. No weakness, no mimic. Then I said screw it and walked around to the front of the coffer, where I'd likely get aggro, and successfully picked it on my first attempt.

I believe that your orientation relative to the coffer/chest has something to do with the success of the pick.

That just tells me that you have a 1/5 chance of success. You have no control. If you went back without leveling or changing gears and picked it 5 more times only from the front of the chest chances are you would still fail four times. You can't come to a conclusion without a control. This is simply a theory, and in my opinion unfounded.

Level 24 Elvaan Thief ~~~ RSE Hunting ~~~ Gusgen Mines

Using Thief's Tools

1st chest-Magical Pattern
2nd chest-Cursed for 5 minutes, chest disappeared or someone else got it, I ran.
3rd Chest-Magical Pattern
4th Chest- Failed 3 times, obtained magical pattern

Additional items needed at this level and area,
Silent Oil- I used 30ish.
Instant Warp- 1 every trip.

note on Gusgen Mines area- Its easiest to go and circle the top area while sneaked as you walk across 8-9 spawn points and can see if a chest has spawned on the lower area that is inaccessible when you are at the top area. Those who have been to gusgen know what i'm talking about.

One question and one observation:

When opening a chest or coffer while in a group, if you recieve gold is the amount of gold in the chest split between the members of your party or does each member recieve the amount you would have got alone? The reason I'm asking is I recently picked a treasure chest (2nd try as a lvl 38 mithra using thief's tools) in davoi while in a group of 4 and we each recieved 3,500 gil. I assumed it split the gil between us, as that makes the most sense, but a member of the group said he had picked treasure chests there alone and never recieved more than 3,500 gil. Would I have recieved 14,000 gil had I picked the chest while I was alone?

And now the observation. Has anyone ever gotten a mimic while picking a treasure chest? I realise they are resonably common when picking coffers, but I have never seen anyone report a treasure chest spawning a mimic. If treasure chests cannot be mimics, then it is likely that living keys are designed for use on treasure chests, and not coffers.

mimcs only spawn with coffers. treasure chest get trapped which will weaken you for a period of time.

1. not sure about the gil split. it would be interesting if someone would respond on this.

2. can anyone verify that they have never got weakness/trapped from a coffer and never got mimic from a chest? if this cannot be disputed I will add a comment up at the top that chest = trap and coffer = mimic...

1. Not sure about, i dont think you get the same solo as in a group but im not 100% sure about that. If you all get say 3500 each in a pt then perhaps you would have only got 11k, that has been my observation anyway from the coffers picked to date.

2. I have received weakness from a coffer pick before i think it was monastic caverns

OK, screw Castle Oztroja! I've found my new hunting grounds at Fei'Yin... and it is good... Taking the advice of several of you (/praise)I gave it a shot last night, and wow.... This post is about why I think its so much better than Castle O.

I am only lvl 52 thf right now, so I still fail a fair amount when picking locks. This issue is compounded when hunting coffers in Castle O. for several reasons:

1) In my experience coffers can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to respawn.

2) Coffers in Castle O. are so overcamped (usually) by other thieves and AF-hunters that you're lucky to even get to a coffer first when they do spawn.

3) Coffers are more difficult to open than chests, meaning higher failure rate (more keys used.. more money wasted..)

4) I don't know about the rest of you, but at my level I only use skeleton keys when trying to pick coffers. Obviously these are quite pricey, costing twice as much as a stack of living keys and more than three times as much as a stack of thief's tools. Combine this with the high failure rate and... /goodbye gil

5) Ahhhh... and mimics... there's always the chance of getting a mimic when coffer-hunting, which effectively ends your hunting expedition at least until Perfect Dodge recharges. I've used many a warp scroll (ergo many a conquest point) because of this one factor alone.

So lets see here... coffers take longer to spawn and are so overcamped you're lucky to even get to one. They're more difficult to open so you're lucky if you can even get them opened without failing and going through all your keys or (worst case) getting a mimic which sends you home. Then assuming you overcome all those hurdles and open the coffer, you have a higher probability of getting some gil or a crappy stone (neither is usually worth the price in keys used to open it, as it takes me ~3 skeleton keys on average to open a coffer) rather than an astral ring you desire...

In Fei'Yin however, the item you seek is in treasure CHESTS, which are easier to pick and seem to have a shorter respawn time of 20-30 minutes (I was timing it). It also seems that you get the desired item more frequently. In Castle O., typically 1 in 4 coffers yields the astral ring over a long-run average (IF you successfully open it :P). In my experience thus far in Fei'Yin (albeit I just started doing this) roughly every other chest yields the life belt. Also, because they are chests, I use cheaper keys (thief's tools or living keys) rather than the skeleton keys I reserve for coffers. And I must say my failure rate is MUCH lower. Last might I popped 4 chests in a row, each on my first attempt with thief's tools (2/4 life belts). I was weakened once for about 40 minutes (took a break to do laundry lol), but then proceeded to obtain another life belt, for a grand total of 3 belts in about 3 hours of hunting, INCLUDING the 40 minutes I was weakened (you cannot open chests/coffers while weakened in case anyone didn't know). Even at the lowest selling price on my server, that's as much as an astral ring goes for with much less risk involved.

There is also much less competition in Fei'Yin. No AF hunters (obviously), and I only saw one other thief and a few randoms killing shadows for keys, but since I was timing the spawns I managed to get most of the chests. This was during prime time hours too, mind you. The only drawback I can see is that the life belt goes for 50-80k on my server while astrals can go for 150-180k, and also the chest spawn points in Fei'Yin are very spread out and someone my level requires both sneak and invisible in some places rather than just invisible to avoid aggro. Also there are creatures in Fei'Yin that aggro magic, so you have to sometimes find a safe spot to recast. Once you become familiar with the place, learn the mobs and where and when to recast, this becomes a non-issue however. Oh and (and this is sweet) I didn't use my 2-hour or warp scroll at all! Bye bye mimics! Don't have to worry about those evil things in Fei'Yin, so if all goes well you won't have to use your warp scroll until you, yes YOU, are ready to leave!

That being said, I feel that, at least for a thief of my level, this is soooo much more rewarding than coffer hunting in Castle O. I wish I'd been doing this since 50 and I encourage all my thief peers to give it a shot at least once. I work full-time and therefore want to maximize what game time I do have, especially when trying to earn gil. This to me is so much better than running around for hours in Castle O. to possibly not even find a coffer, then if I do take the great risk of getting a mimic and wasting hours of my time and a warp scroll ><. I have found 4 astral rings after many hours in Castle O. Last night I found 3 life belts in 3 hours in Fei'Yin (*cough* ~60k gil/hour). Maybe once I level more and picking coffers becomes easier I'll reconsider, but until then, Fei'Yin is where you'll find me.

P.S.: Do the quest for the Fei'Yin map. You'll be glad you did. It's a pain because it appears the map quest is #3 on a stack of quests for the optistry in Windurst, so even if your fame is jacked you'll have to do the other 2 first in order to get the Fei'Yin map quest. (Early Bird Catches the Bookworm > Chasing Tales > A Smudge on One's Record) You also have to zone in between each or you cannot activate the next.

So far for the record I'm 4/4 on each Coffer (not sure how long my luck'll last ; ;)
Elvaan Thief---
Monastic Cavern : Lv 49- 5 lost keys-6th Successful-Acquired Old Gauntlets
Castle Oztroja : Level 50- Lost 4 keys-5th successful-Acquired Rogue's Culotte
Castle Oztroja : Level 50- Lost 3 keys-4th Successful-Acquired Astral Ring
Eldimine Necropolis : Level 51- 1st Key successful- Acquired Vile Elixer+1

For all of these i've used Thief's Tools, not sure but maybe stats play a role in each key i.e. Thief tools% = DEX Living Key% = INT Skeleton Key% = ...hell if i know AGI?

and 2nd of all the Level thing seems kinda wierd, seeing as were picklocking Coffers in an area full of IT's, is it just the 'coffer level' itself were lookin at?

and lastly I've seen one Thief escape from a Mimic once o.O dunno how the fock he did it but he flee'd his azz and ran away... not sure if he made it though lol.

As a lvl 34 THF, is there any place where I can go treasure chest hunting where I can one actually expect to succeed at opening a chest and two the reward will be greater than the cost of thiefs tools?
I know I can open chests in Gusgen Mine and Ordelles Cave since I solod my RSE in those two locations. I also know that the reword for opening a chest, at least in Gusgen, is not worth the time, risk, and cost of tools. I popped one open as a test outside of my RSE week and got a few hundred gil, hardly worth the effort.
Any guidance from the elders?

Posting to help you update your Minimum Successful Level Reported list.

Monastic Cavern, level 52 Elvaan, 9 skeleton keys wasted to get a mimic. Came back later, 3 keys to open the coffer and get key item for AF.

Castle Oz, level 54 Elvaan, skeleton keys. Lots of failures, lots of mimics. Best pick was using 2 keys to get a coffer open and an Astral in my inventory.

When I go coffer hunting now, I try to wear as much +DEX gear as possible. I use my AF dagger instead of my Corsairs, I wear my Forest Belt instead of my Life Belt, etc. For me, coffer hunting in Castle Oz was a pain at any level before 54. I at least succeed now, even though I have my handful of failures.

My advice, always carry skeleton keys and thieves tools or living keys on you. If you're in a party and see a Chest, why blow a couple 2.5k skeleton keys on it just to get 4 or 5k for the party, or some so-so item. Use the cheap keys.
Also, don't pick coffers while partying. I made this mistake, got a mimic, and got a lot of /slap's later.

This just hit me earlier!! (not entirely sure if its true but hell lets give it a shot)
I remember me n a friend were out farming in giddeus training yagudo n crap. i found this lake and had a rod so im like im gonna chill ^^ she just called me lazy n went on.. then i look behind me and im like whoa.. (Treasure Chest) <Found it!> i use a handy dandy thief tools... WEAKENED?!?! ugh...
Whats wierd was i was like lv 43-45 at this time..

Back at like lv 34-36 i was lookin for RSE (in ordelles caves), had some nice skeleton keys with me.. (only 4 cus i was poor lol.. still am really ; ;) then im searchin.. boo ya. 5 minutes and i found the chest where it usually sits... FIRST SKELETON KEY IT POPS OPEN.. :\
--------------
Coffers~
then at lv 49 i try my luck at a coffer, takes a few keys (as stated above) but i popped that sucker open. Thief's tools were used along with 1 skeleton. I was surprised cus usually this skeleton key gets the job done..

I could go on and on n crap but hell it may not make too much sense... But what i've found out from some of these experiences is..
Thief's Tools (so far) seem to have a better advantage on coffers while Skeleton keys (note harumos post, btw whasup man ^^) seem to have a better effect on Chests...

i may not be the first one to find this out.. ill try to c if i am though. try to keep this in mind though fellow treasure hunters :)

**Additional Note: I havent tried with Living keys yet.. (theyre freaky lookin for one) but i will experiment with these soon. some rumors i hear is they have like... an effect like +5 Treasure Rarity... +5 mimic chance... so its risky from wut i hear..

generally the higher lvl dungeons require you to get a map out of a coffer, and if this is the case, you will always get a map on your first time opening a coffer there

I asked this question earlier in a seperate thread but never got a direct answer, so I'm asking again here:

Has anyone ever been weakened when picking a treasure CHEST with a LIVING KEY?

Ever since I started using them to hunt chests, I've yet to be weakened after a failed attempt. This used to occur quite frequently when I was using thief's tools, and I really only switched to the more expensive living keys because the AH never has thief's tools anymore on my server. Now I'm hooked on the living keys for this reason, plus I can craft them now w/ my alchemy. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ^^

I just wanted to put in some of my experience's with picking coffers (50THF/25NIN):

Headed out to Monastic Cavern to pick coffer for old gauntlets:
Spotted the coffer and opened it in one try (Skeleton Key)

So I thought I would press my luck and head over to Castle Ostroja to get some astral rings:
Spotted the coffer and sad to say but it was in the pit with leeches, figured I'd jump in anyways, picked it and opened with one key (Skeleton Key again) to my surprise, got my AF pants. Didn't read up on it yet so I was happy as hell.

I was being greedy so I went back to Caslte Ostroja, spotted the coffer again at the same spot, tried picking it, wasted 4 keys and on my fifth one, turned into a mimic. Spammed my panic macro to find out I didn't have a warp scroll :(.

I came back after dying, and once again theres the coffer in front of me, scared as hell another mimic would pop, I figured I'd take a shot at it again, after 3 failures the damn mimic pops again.

So I have a question, does the coffer open easier if what you're picking for is your AF? Or did I just have bad luck with those damn mimics?

Level makes a big difference....there's ALWAYS a chance to get a mimic, even at 75, it just gets somewhat lower as you get higher.

More lockpicking experiences.

Went to Fei'Yin. I'm level 55 THF/NIN. Came with a stack of living keys.
1 weakness
1 failure
2 life belt's
5 various gil, totalling about 30k

I got one failure before getting a life belt. But the success rate here is really good. I have 3 more keys, so I'll have to go back for more.

In my experience with mimics, Ive noticed that the mimics dissapear after a certain time period (less then 5 min) and the chest reappears about 10 mins later in a different area. Im kinda surprise the chest was still there when you got back from Jueno.

I had good experience with RSE (although I just quested a few pieced at 50 for cash) and in mon cavern it took me 7 tries with tools before it poped but no mimic or weakness. I've never gotten a chance to try in Castle O since I've yet to see a coffer there but I've got a key now so hopefully I'll get my pants soon.

I did spawn a mimic on my first try in Kuftal Tunnel. Got weakened on my first try for the may in Boydra also. I was even in palborough mines and got freakin weakened on my first try. Ive just had bad luck as of late it would seem.

dex 71+22
agi 63+13 *dont know that it affects it but...*
int 52+7

i wore my AF hat while attempting the lockpick instead of my emp pin, even tho ive heard that +dex is better w/thieves tools...ive got 10 tools, and 2 living keys and im broke as a joke, so im thinking about going to fei'yin...just quested the map this week so... *crosses fingers*

I am a level 50thf/nin, hume. I just finished picking all 3 of my AF coffers using skeleton keys.

Davoi - Used 4 keys
Castle Oztroja - Used 1 key
Castle Zvahl Baileys - Used 3 keys

I did not encounter a mimic or weakness. Everytime I found a coffer I opened it before using warp/hide to escape.

And for the record, Castle Zvahl Baileys is one HELL of a scary place.

Level 37:

Thief's Tools, Maze of Shakrami, success
Thief's Tools, Delkfutt's Tower, success

Level 38:

Thief's Tools, Gusgen Mines, success
Thief's Tools, Gusgen Mines, FAILURE
Thief's Tools, Gusgen Mines, success

After that failure, my LS members had to get me a key so I could open up the chest like a common non-THF; I was ashamed ^^. At least I have all my RSE now. Race is Mithra as indicated in my profile.

The Delkfutt's Tower chest just sort of randomly jumped out at me while I was doing Mission 3-3, and I risked it because I am an idiot :) However, I had to be stealthed through the tower anyway, and I was hardly key to the operation (we had a 55 DRK along). So I don't feel too bad.

you might try

palborough mines
dandruf wadi
fort ghelsba
giddeus

and other zones in the same level range.

although the rewards for the picking of these chests isn't going to be that much higher than the cost of a thief tool.

as far as gil/hour is concerned your better off just carrying some thief's tools around with you and farm in a zone that just happens to have coffers. that way the coffer is just a suplement for additional income, not the soul source.

Help! I just spend 1.5hrs and a stack of sneak oils looking for chests in feyin! I did not see one chest... Do chests despawn? I ran in circles checking all but the 3 I couldn't find a way to get to. There we're 2 other thf's but I never saw them once I just kept running the cirlce and not one chest or theif was sighted! Whats the deal? I was counting on this to be my new source of income and instead I wasted a stack of oil!

Ouch.. that sucks. I've done quite a bit of chest hunting in Fei'yin. Either one of those thieves was beating you to the punch, or the chest was just sitting on one of those 3 spawn points you weren't checking. The chest actually spawns up there quite often.

My main concern is that you're using silent oils to get around. If you're planning on doing this frequently to make money as you said, you're gonna be losing A LOT of money on silent oils, since pretty much everything there will aggro you at 50. I see you haven't leveled white mage to sub for sneak/invis, which is what I do and would recommend to any thief, but if you don't want to do that you may just want to level up some, sub ninja and give coffer hunting in oztroja a shot. The competition is fierce, but at least you can keep yourself invisible.

I'm level 55 now, and when I hunt in Fei'Yin the only things that aggro me on the main level are some of the ore golems and the shadows, (i.e. I only cast sneak on myself when running through the shadow rooms and when running downstairs to check the other 3 spawn points you mentioned) another reason to consider leveling up a bit. Also Hide works on dropping aggro from golems.

I know it sucks, but I would seriously either level white mage or red mage to sub for free sneak/invisible, or just level as close to 60 as you can, sub ninja and camp oztroja. Otherwise I think you'll be spending too much money in attempt to make some of it back. I hope this helps, and happy hunting! ^^

P.S. I've also heard that rumor about chests despawning, and I don't think it's true. My LS leader has seen a chest in Fei'yin sitting there for nearly an hour while he killed stuff trying to get a key, and I myself have sat right by a chest for 40 minutes while waiting for weakness to go away so I could pick it.

Wow thanks Id rate you up but I was camped out of scholer on the server boards >.<

I wanted to try feyin because alot of times on my server theres NO one there. I went the night before without a map and was wandering with a alliance doing whm af and I saw no chests then either and I checked a few of the spawn points then too. I just cant ever find them there.
I inteded to lvl whm to sneak eventually I just wanted to see if picking locks was for me. The cost of 4-7k silent oils would be a small price for 90k and because there shouldnt have been problem I just cant find the chests >.<
Feyin was the place to be for me because I don't like the compition I like being the lone tomb raiding thf when deep in the Dungeons.

I take it to get to those 3 chests on the top left of the map is by going through the bottom floor?

Yeah, I totally agree about wanting to be the lone chest/coffer hunter. I hate doing it when there's competition, because it always seems they'll beat me to it. Especially in Oztroja, there's always high level thieves that don't worry about getting aggro in the lower coffer zone, so they just flee right on through. I, on the other hand, will get aggroed by anything in there. Oh, and if ever I do have the place to myself (GASP!), rest assured that the coffer will spawn in the leech pool ><. Then it's either give up, or pick it and know for sure I'll be using my 2-hour and warp scroll when those suckers aggro me. I seriously wish Thieves has an ability similar to Hide which works on sound detection. Actually, just yesterday I did have the castle all to myself for about 4 hours and the coffer never spawned in the pool! 3/5 coffers I got had rings in them too!! I seriously wouldn't recommend hunting Oztroja until you hit 55. I was doing it at 50 and got a LOT of mimics. Now that I've gone back at 55, I've gotten 1 mimic out of ~5 stacks of skeleton keys, though I still fail quite a bit before successfully picking the coffer.

But yes, Fei'Yin is a GREAT alternative when Oztroja becomes one huge thief sausage party. Dude, level your white mage or red mage, you will be SO glad you did. It comes in handy for much more than just chest/coffer hunting. If you do want to stick with the silent oils, you may consider leveling thief to 61. I was told that's the level where the shadows on the first floor will no longer aggro you, so you'd only need them when heading downstairs to check the northwest 3 spawn points. And get the Fei'Yin map!! Reference my post above about it, as the quest is #3 in a stack of quests for the Optistry in Windurst. The stairway leading into the basement of Fei'Yin is just southwest of the main room in the center. Once downstairs, keep sneak up at all times and watch where you cast as colossus, dromas and weapons there will aggro magic. The stairs leading back up to the 3 spawn points are northwest on the basement map.

I hope this helps you! Level that thief! Level that white mage! In time, all good things will be yours!

w00t my compition is a 74thf with strider boots!!

Anyways I got camping here down pat except when I check EVERY spawn point and see no chest. I will lvl whm for this cause these sneaks are costing me a fortune.

My record 1/2 - 1 living key = 1 life belt, 1 living key = trapped.

I have three questions, but i'm pretty sure i know the answer to the first.

Since you are running around looking for chests and coffers, I guess they don't show up on widescan? ( I don't have RNG yet, so i don't know.)

And two, is it true that mimics always drop coffer keys if you kill them? If so is it ever possible to solo them, or are they too strong even at 75?

Three, I hear there is a door lock thieves can pick, in tavnasia, do you think this works the same as chest lock-picking? And are there more doors like that? If there are then thieves are even more useful than i thought!

I'm a bit low to start lock picking, but i don't want to die, just to find out my idiotic idea doesn't work.

everytime I've ever killed a mimic it has always dropped the key to the chest/coffer that you spawned the mimic on. It makes sense that it would be a guaranteed drop. As far as I know I've never heard of someone not getting a key from a mimic.

It's a great trick if you have a low level thf in the party to spawn a mimic from one of those chests if you are in a key hunting party.
