Talk to the site administration. They generally don't like to make too many stickies because of overhead, but they will make exceptions. They did with my sneak + trick guide for example.

Just opened one in Davoi: 37 THF/NIN, first try with Thief's tools. Heading down to the Monastic Caverns now to see if my luck holds.

EDIT: No luck, burned through the rest of the stack of tools (10 in all) and couldn't open the coffer.

EDIT 2: Had a thought... what about keeping track of minimum level by tool? It might be easier with different tools depending on the area. All we've got at this point is speculation and gut feelings on the difference between the three, so keeping track of the reports on these could be very useful.

We could keep track like you asked. My personal belief is that if you can pick a chest at a certain level at a place, then if you have the same equipment and stats the key doesn't matter. I believe the key you use just changes your success rate, and that if you can get a success with one key, then you can get a success with any key, just the number of times you have to try before the success may be different.

I'm inclined to agree, actually. We've just not verified it either way yet :)

The only place I've seen that has lists of the contents of chests and coffers are the treasure maps at Speakeasy, also known as Map 1 on Mysterytour. I've been working on a translation, and should have it done in a day or so.

Edit: Spelling.

For Living keys in Nest:

level to use, ~53. I'm 53 and I rarely fail. Vs chest I've never failed and vs coffer i've failed two picks in 10 key attempts. No mimics, no weakeness. I think the level is lower, but by 50 it seems every key works like it should. I faield gideus chest with a skele key once at level 47...weakeness=wtf?

Monastic cavern is another never fail with living key at ~53.

Beadeaux, Davoi, Toraimari Canal, Sea Serpent and Fei'yin are also no fails or next to no fails with living key at lvl 53. I've picked a lot of chests and coffers, and have my data here, but I've noticed a HUGE difference from level 30-49 and 50-53. It's like night and day the difference in success chance. I also used many skele and tools, and never had near the kind of success I do with Living. Perhaps the key itself is the thing with the level range?

Ok heres my info on the keys as a lvl 54 Thf

Using thief's tools in Castle Oztroja

1st Pick - Fail
2nd Pick - AF!! (i was trying for astral rings actually but i'll take what i can get)
3rd Pick - Fail
4th Pick - Mimic!!! And with 2 yagudo beating on me as well i was killed... luckily raise 3 was avail from a nearby friendly whm

My coffer hunting ended soon after as i was about to light a torch to open the locked door (it was the only place left to check and noone was around it had to be there) and got D/C, logged back in to find i was dead, no delvl gladly

On a side note i was able to successfully steal 3 gold beastcoins in about 10 attempts whilst there ^_^ and i dont have my af gloves or hat yet!

As a lvl 50 THF/NIN last night I picked a Coffer in 9 tries in Monastic Cavern for my AF Arms -_- I was using Skeleton keys. The moon was at about 90%. The previous time I tried I popped a mimic on my third try, again with skeleton keys. I'm not sure what the moon was on this night. Hope this helps in some way.

I've picked locks on a couple coffers and a couple chests. First time in Crawler's Nest, I'd gotten a stack of Skeleton Keys to go for my AF gloves but was leveling at the time in the Nest, coffer was right behind me where we were leveling, popped the lock at level 52 on the first try and got a hi-reraiser, sold for 12k on Phoenix at the AH.

Next went down to Monastic Cavern, had White Mage subbed for Invisible, failed miserably trying to pick the lock 4 or 5 times before a Mimic spawned and nearly killed me as my Perfect Dodge macro chose that time to stick. Came back a few days later with my Ranger sub, as I started to pick the coffer orc turned around started attacking me, hit Perfect Dodge, continued picking the lock, got the old gauntlets, died a few seconds later.

Picked my third one today, just a regular chest while helping people do a few random things in Davoi, got an Electrum Ring, gave it to a friend in return for a favor later on and because he let me have the Archer's Knife that we'd gotten earlier on.

I've been level 52 for all my attempts and only used Skeleton Keys. DEX might have something to do with it considering Rangers have higher DEX than White Mages. With a sub that enhances DEX I'd like to have seen if my chances would've been better.

One of the reasons I started this thread was because I wasted an entire stack of Skeleton Keys trying to open a chest in Castle Oztroja as a level 43thf..

I had read many of the threads on lockpicking and did not realize that your chance of opening a chest drops to zero if the level difference between you and the mobs in the area is too great. Hopefully this thread will prevent a few others from making the same 30,000 gil mistake... /sigh

Well as I said in my last post here is my experience so far with coffers. Specificly in Castle Oztroja.

Area: Castle Oztroja (genkai 3 room)
Key: Skeleton
Target: Coffer
Level: 49thf/25nin

Well it took some time learing the area but I got used to it eventually. Getting through the first bronze door is a big pain in the rear end but after you do that its pretty much smooth sailing.
Now the room I have been in and out of the past week is the same where where you get the genkai 3. (This is what Ive been told at least). The only way in this room is to light a torch from one of the 4 rooms outside this room. Only prob is all of the mobs are lev 60-69. Once you get inside the room its just a matter of waiting. Once you pop the chest itll spawn 30 min later in a random location of about 8 spots.
Now just about 3 min ago the chest FINALLY spawned for me and it took 9 skeleton keys before I got it open.
THE PRIZE??? 12,240 in gil
Not to bad if the keys didnt cost 30k a stack.

So Ive come to a conclusion that
1. the level of the mobs around you may not directly effect the chance of you opening the chest.

2. Hunting coffers is the BIGGEST pain the the rear end.

3. If you do plan on hunting coffers, if your as lucky as I was to be the only one hunting the chest, bring a gameboy to keep you busy.

Might want to add that THFs should not pick locks when they are in parties, it is as bad or worse than fishing where you can fish up a monster. Even a chest that might seem easy could weaken them for 30 minutes to an hour. That would make them useless for the party.

I just wanted to say that because today, a thief in a party I was in, that was going after a Garlaige Coffer key, decided it would be funny if he would pick the lock on a chest we found before I could get to it and use my key. He was dropped to 1 HP and weakened. The chest disappeared and I'm looking to be sitting on this garlaige key for another month.

I still don't understand why he wanted to show off after I had made a special trip back to San d'Oria to get my key out of storage just in case I ran accross the chest. He was the one who said it would be ok for me to take the time to go get it.

I'm still kinda wishing some AOE would have killed him when he only had 206 HP. But thats mean, so I'm not really wishing that ^^

I've read in here plenty of times at what level you should be to start coffer hunting in Castle Ohmylookatthesehighlevelyags (Ortzawhatereverit'snamed) is about 50-52. Well last night waiting for stuff to happen and reading about AF 1-4, I headed to the Castle with a stack and a half of Thief Tools. Since I was running and just then remembering about my scroll of instant warp, I just said... Ahh... to heck with it and kept on going. Then hitting the old "/clock on" to see what day it was and sure enough, Darksday. At that second I remember Famke posting something along the lines of mimics seeming to spawn more often on Darksday than any. It made the idea of not having that scroll even more of an issue. But I kept on running. Got to the second door and two EP's were guarding the door. After they were facing the other way I dropped invisibility and started on the Handles. Door started to open, as I turn around I get Yag Aggro. I have 1 of 3 panic macro's and I hit the DEFCON 2 macro. Perfect Dodge / Flee / Hide. And tried to run for the door but it was in the process of closing so I ran to where the TW's were to rest up. Went for it again after the poison cleared and I could rest up for more hit points. Got in. Ran the coffer Spawn points like 4 or 5 times before seeing the coffer.

Used Thief Picks on Firesday:
Fail
Fail
Fail
Fail
Pick Successful - Rouge's Coulette's. (sp)

Tonko: Ichi

Skipped my way out of their as a a happy camper. On my way out a thief was running up the hallway in full AF. Tried to tell him that I just picked the coffer for my AF to let him know that he was going to have to wait for a pop, but he was Japanese and my Japanese isn't that good nor could I figure out in auto translate how to tell him this.

So off I went back to Jeuno to put my new leggings in my Safe.

At the time I did this pick Thf53/Nin20.

Good luck!! ^^

Funny side note, when I went back to Jeuno I put my tools back in the safe to level nin. My static wanted to go get some exp. so I went back to MH to change jobs and forgot to grab my tools. While choco'ing it to the crawlers' nest I realized this and have really only seen the coffer by the camp once. As I run by the Rumble Crawler Spawn point where the three spawn at... sure enough... there's the coffer sitting there smiling at me.

Me: PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE CAN I GET A WARP II????
Party members: Why??? Where you going.
Me: :'( <t> (Treasure Coffer)
Party members: LoL
Me: **** it!!
Pld: Your AF here?
Me: No... I'm just a greedy thief.
Party: LoL
Me: :( ... LoL

I have a sugestion. What if the differnt keys have differnt things effecting them. maybe living key is affected by int and theif's tools is affected by Dex. that is a possibility. My int and dex are pretty close and im a lvl 25thf/nin This could be a possiblity. i mean since the stats are pretty close maybe you just dont see the differnce as much. ;)

I also have a question. anyone pick the lok for their RSE when there around the lvl of getting their RSE (ie 25~30)? cause i wanna get those gloves!

What happens when you try to open a chest with sneak on? Does it cancel automatically or you cannot open the chest unless you turn it off?

Well how much higher is the taru int compared to others...i dont think its tooo much hight....and plus maybe it isnt all int maybe its just the main atribute that helps....and maybe taru can pick locks before other races...has this been tested? i dunno maybe someone should test it? so maybe along with key and stuff you should post your race...

i'm pretty sure sneak doesn't effect lockpicking, as you can open a door with sneak on. you just can't open doors and locks or anything else with invis up.

Castle Zvalz:
First try at lvl 51 with Thief Tools

Castle Oztroja :
3 Skeleton Keys all of them failed
2 Thief Tools i opened it with the second one

Thief Tools also got me a Mimic in castle oz.. the first time i got the coffer

Gusgen Mines LVL 25 Thief Tools at the first try the four parts fo the RSE (all in 1.5 hrs ^^)

Also i think that matters what equipment ur wearing in your hands... cause i got better success with just 1 lvl of diference using THF AF.. than with the old gloves i was wearing... maybe cause the AF are not globes *****... they are more like Kotes

a few things...

1. added race to posts.. haven't gone back through all the post and researched ppls profiles... yet.... please list race if you can to avoid me having to check your profile.

2. not sure if sneak wears off.. i think i've unlocked chests in gusgen with sneak on and it stayed.. but i'm not sure.. if anyone can verify this it would be kewl and i will add it to the tips.

3. thank you Celhya, you set 3 new records :D

You can pick a lock with sneak still active, unlike invisible. However sneak will go away after you do so, regardless of whether you are successful or not. This is based on my experience hunting RSE in gusgen where *everything* aggros sound...

Interesting note: Chests/Coffers respawn immediately after a mimic is summoned.

Any experienced lock-picker is familiar with the travesty that is finding a mimic rather than the desired loot. On several occasions I have also been witness to others experiencing this, rounding a corner in Oztroja in time to see a mimic mauling some stunned, hapless thief.

On this most recent occurance, I had just run the full length of the "coffer zone" and ended up in the statue room just in time to see a thief who had attempted to pick the coffer that had spawned behind the statue summon a mimic, use perfect dodge then warp scroll out. I sat there for while, explicitly emoting at the spent mimic until it finally disappeared.

Now we all know that when a coffer is picked, it usually takes a minimum of 10-15 minutes to respawn, time to go afk for a drink, food, etc. Well as soon as the mimic vanished, I decided to start hunting right away for some reason, though I did not expect to find another coffer right away. I made the journey back through the coffer zone, and there was a new coffer at the 1st spawn point from the lever door! This had spawned in just a few minutes from the disappearance of the mimic. Maybe it was just a really short respawn, but I doubt it. Sadly, I also got a mimic when trying to pick it so I could not further my investigation that evening. :( It seems there was bad karma floating around Oztroja last night...

First pick on a Quicksand coffer with they key yielded the Quicksand map. Don't know if it's like this?

I've had trouble in Monastic cavern-

It seems that most of the information here is about coffers and not treasure chests. Is there another post to deal with Chests or is this the "all in one" post. If so I hope to get my RSE's soon. My THF is listed below and as of writing this is level 22. I only need to pick 3 as I was lucky in that a party in Ordelles new I and a ls buddy were looking for keys so they invited me in to Lot an extra key they found(not sure why I mentioned this just like to share moments of in-game kindenss I guess).
I've seen on multiple posts that the best option is to buy Sneak Oils and (Insert Key here) and go to Gusgen because everything there agros to sound. Thief tools seem to be the cheap and seemingly effective route. Am I wrong? Should I just go back to Ordelles with my Monk/Thief and look for keys myself? I'm sure the other RSE hunters would apreciate info on this subject as well.

Whats the Key to being good at FFXI?
Time-the overriding factor in "how good" a player is.
Intelligence-governs how succesfully a player uses his/her time.
Money-Overrides Time by simply being able to buy gil, which is the lifeblood of this game.

Everything that applies to coffers also applies to chests.

As for RSE picking at 22, I'm not sure. Most of these minimum levels are just what people have reported, they have nothing to do with what the lowest possible is. If you manage to pick it at 22 let us know your level, key, dungeon, and race so we can post it to help others!

thanks Yugitamer! I added your 2 successful picks! Sorry, to hear about Castle O. From our discussion last night I thought you succeeded, didn't know you failed.. I too have failed a couple of times there. I tried again at 48 and failed. I think I'll just wait till I'm 50, since people have succeeded at 50, as I am 49 right now.

Got another one for you... Castle Oztroja chest opened first try with Thief's Tools at level 40. (Got 5360 gil, and with the 5600 I got from the Davoi chest in the same run, I finally got enough gil to afford my next bow with Ranger too. ^^) So obviously chests and coffers in the same area have different requirements to open them. Not that anyone really cares about Oztroja chests, but it's still worth noting. ^^

Edit: I'm a Hume, btw.

Right, finally finished the chest&coffer content translation. The original site is here, and all I've done is translate it from the original Japanese. There were a couple of things for which I didn't know the English name of the item, namely the beastmaster items from the chests in Delkfutt's and Oztroja. I'm guessing these are involved in the beastmaster AF quests, but I don't really know. So if you know what they're called, please let me know :)

EDIT: Oops, I missed Garlaige. I'll add that soon.

EDIT2: Added Garlaige Citadel.

ideally, to maximize your skills over other jobs, you may want to find a place where you can farm, pick chest or coffers, steal valuable items, craft, and harvesting/mining/lumber/fishing all at the same time. although places with just a few of these are hard to come by much less all of them.

theoretically, if you want to make more gil per hour, you probablly want your income strategy to involve at least 2 of these at the same time.

example: astral rings + steal gold coins
example: rams + leather craft + steal sheep wool
example: mob farming + stealing items + crafting + harvesting
example: mining + coffers or chests
