gogo Google Doodle! TIL that Yosemite National Park is 123 years old - today!

Well, Yosemite, Happy Birthday! Smiley: cake Smiley: clap

And for your birthday, we are giving you a special present. The park will be closed today and you can have the entire day to yourself, in peace. Go ahead, do whatever you want.

We may even give you more than just one day. It depends upon whether or not we can get a roomful of a-holes to agree. Smiley: disappointed

Italy is bankrupt, yo. Good times here in the European Union. Sure glad we joined that nepotistic cesspool back in the days. Giving Germany and France veto over Europe was the best thing to do after World War II, obviously. One tried to conquer the entire world and the other dug itself into a hole upon confronted with the former's agenda. Then came Italy and Greece, one a modern dictatorship and the other a country where people retire at age 50, which is financially feasible, surely.

What I can't wrap my head around is how these financial crises came as a surprise to ******* anyone in Brussels. This has been going on for 20 years and not a single **** was given until it was too late.

Good lord.

It's not really surprising. You have a party that can't agree with itself in the majority position with incapable leadership.

They can't get a majority on their own motions, because the super conservative wing vetoes those. They can't get a majority on a compromised initiatives, because the leadership won't bring them up, because they are trying to garner favor with the super conservative base. The democrats don't have a straight majority or control of the House, so they can't get a majority.

So.

Underneath it all I see:

We have too many "safe congressional districts" where one party is almost guaranteed to win. Meaning you have moderate Republican vs Nutjob in the primary; with either one having a chance to represent the district.

So many states have closed primaries now, so you don't get the more moderate unregistered voters voting anymore.

This North vs South dichotomy has been there since we've been a country, with us lacking any kind of outside "bad guy" to scare us into working together these differences become all-consuming.

It's getting more and more difficult to reconcile different sources of information, we aren't all watching the same 3 news stations anymore.

American culture is very competitive, especially amongst ourselves.

In the end you're left with a fairly unsustainable mess. They're going to have to solve this one way or another eventually. We keep getting used to greater and greater dysfunction, and eventually they'll actually have to cause serious problems before anyone cares. That's what worries me 10-15 years down the road.

The whole winner takes all thing is just really, really bad for politics. You guys should let the house ad senate seats get divided proportionally so the Tea Party can get all happy and crazy and split off from the GOP and some slightly more sane kind of crazy can take over from this mess.

Edit: and is it just me or is the GOP effectively signing away a shot at the presidency with actions like these that are hugely unpopular nationwide?

Oh it's awful for us right about now. The biggest problem is that the ones in power have the system structured to in a way they've become very good at exploiting. They aren't about to change that without one heck of a fight.

@ Edit: Surprisingly enough I doubt it. At this point the worst thing is Obamacare being very successful, in which case they'll have to spin something else, and it'll be more of an uphill battle. Remember that a significant portion of the country is getting a completely different message thanks to partisan news sources; this is all framed in a very different light there, like "Obama and the Democrats digging their heels in over restrictions to an unpopular health care program while the countries debt spirals out of control." Also, calling it a "slimdown" instead of a "shutdown" makes it sound like the Democrats are playing this thing up into more of a problem than it really is.

Sure but the majority of America watches something other than Fox News, right? And I'm assuming that for anyone who pays a modicum of attention it's obvious that this is the Tea Party throwing a hissy fit over a law that passed congress, was signed into law and found constitutional and one that is supposed to save money to boot.

Edit: Don't you have a part in raising that more reasonable generation? Your kids will be able to vote for the third president from now (assuming 2 term presidents).

They're not even focusing on that part (i.e. it isn't really even mentioned). It's more about all the debt and the lack of responsibility on the other side forcing the Republicans' hands.

Also remember winner takes all right? So 51% runs the chamber of congress and 51% of that can run the party. So you only need about 26% of the people to think a compromise is unreasonable to shut things down, and we have a lot of rednecks over here.

Like you said this is where "winner takes all" gets stupid. Smiley: rolleyes

If it helps our stock market has barely budged thus far, so you aren't going to see big problems beyond our border for a while. The only people that will really be feeling any affects from this (assuming we can wrap it up within a month or so) are the poorer workers who are directly employed, and those that depend on them. Basically it sucks to be them at the moment.

I'm more concerned with this song and dance continuing for next month's debt cap and the possible worldwide economic panic from the threat of the USA not being able to pay back bonds.

On a more happy note, Oregon is quite pretty.
I love the Oregon Coast, really most of the Pacific coast line out here. So rugged and pretty, especially when the sun finally does manage to get through.
I'd love to go there sometime, it looks to me like a good coastline should and I can stand a little rain (I get a bit over 2/3rds of what the Oregon coast gets yearly).

We'll find some way to kick that can a little farther down the road so we can work on our current self-inflicted problem. Thankfully we still seem to be above completely stupid moves.

You're in for a treat either way. Storm watching can actually be a bit entertaining, lots of wind, big waves and such.

Huh, I thought Oregon was one of the inland states.

Geography: I teach it, but I do not know it! Smiley: schooled
