But... she already speaks English. Isn't that kind of cheating?

It is, she really should have majored in Danish or Dutch, much more useful.

Congrats PT! Here's hoping you get the job you want, and don't have to settle for the job you need.

Less English the language, more writing and literature. An English degree has practically zero focus on learning the language itself, it instead focuses on applying the language effectively.

What Fish said. Thanks guys!

So funny thing happened at work, I was all excited and telling customers about me finishing my degree. One lady asked me what I was going to do, and I told her about this troubled youth advocacy non profit that I want to apply for. Guess who was behind her in line? The head of HR for said non profit. What the **** are the odds of that? He was grocery shopping with his family, so I talked to him a little bit and he told me to go ahead and apply now even though I don't officially have my degree yet. Smiley: grin

This is one of the positions I'm going to apply for. The other two are basically the same thing, just at different offices.

Read a gbaji post. An English degree is the opposite of that. In fact, high school English is the opposite of that.

I dunno, I wrote a lot of pointless essays that did very little to sway opinion myself in highscool.

Philosophy with the deductive reasoning, argument structuring and presentation, logic classes and stuff seems to have earned its worth over time.

It isn't about the ability to sway opinions. This is the internet, that doesn't happen. It's just genuinely bad writing, bordering on incoherent rambling.

Yeah, I'm actually still happy I majored in it. Getting the first job was more difficult, but essentially all the skills that philosophy fosters have been super useful, and will continue to be so.

History? Meh. I think it's useful and important personally, but it doesn't really help me too much in conjunction with philosophy. A lot of the skills are the same, but philosophy cuts out details to focus on the skills themselves. I'm happy I studied it, because I love history, but if I was doing it over, I might have chosen something else for my second major.

On the other hand, I might pursue a PhD in history some day. Smiley: lol

Yeah, I wish I had taken the time to take a philosophy class or two. While you can't get a job in the field of philosophy without being a teacher, the skills it teaches you seem to be pretty good.

Plus Steve Martin has a PhD in Philosophy. How cool is that?

Wikipedia Okay, I guess I was wrong about the PhD. I knew he studied it though. He was pretty popular in the 70s-90s. After that he didn't really do many movies or stand up anymore. Pretty funny guy.

Nope, not sure where I should have heard of him. He's not one of the internet's favourite comics and while I'm pretty sure I have seen Pink Panther pretty much nothing else of his looks familiar.

My mind can't comprehend this. Weren't you born in the 80's?

Three Amigos, Roxanne, Housesitter, Bowfinger, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Man with Two Brains... I grew up watching that stuff. He was one of those popular comedians back then.

Man, just reading his filmography on Wikipedia is giving me nostalgia.

I thought it was odd too, but I figured it was because you guys are European and maybe he wasn't as popular over there. If Maz is surprised though, this changes things.

My favorite of his will always be Father of the Bride. I watched that movie so many times as a kid.
