Hah, nope. You guys are awesome and all, but I'm not about to turn this into "Fish's problems with his family" power hour.

I only brought it up initially because I thought it funny that my mom offered to let me raid the booze cabinet.

Bummer. Smiley: frown

Oh well, best with the family and seeing them and such. If they're a bunch of abusive self-centered twats you have my sympathy, and kick them in the shins once for me too.

Anyway, it's time for protein to go see pretty Christmas lights at the zoo, tootles. Smiley: nod

It does.

I need to go meet another group of friends for drinks, and I'm so overstimulated at this point that I REALLY don't want to go.

Being an introvert can be really annoying at times like these...

Or more like making too many plans for one night is not a terribly smart plan if you're an introvert.

You guys might find this funny.

Also, happy American thanksgiving!

Why do people know of Luxembourg but not the Netherlands or Belgium?
#2485 Nov 28 2013 at 2:43 PM Rating: Good
That is a very good question. I know of all three! My knowledge of Western European geography is pretty decent, but Eastern Europe not so much. I know where Russian, Greece, and Turkey are, but that's about it.

I probably wouldn't know more than half of eastern Europe myself, although especially the countries along the Mediterranean are gaining in popularity as holiday destinations because there's sun, beach and really cheap booze.

I don't think I've met an average person who would know where Luxembourg was, regardless of their knowledge of the other two. Smiley: lol

I think the Netherlands are relatively known, because of Amsterdam. I feel like Belgium is more known than Luxembourg, but less than the Netherlands.

Of course, there are plenty of people that think Holland is the name of a country, and that it is distinct from the Netherlands.

Holland is just where the power in the country is/was. With the capital, the seat of the government (different city) and the large ports it was where the money flowed.
North Holland, South Holland and Utrecht were mostly the wealthy provinces and most of the rest of the country was sort of looked down upon much like you guys look down on the south and midwest.

Holland is quite aptly named as well, literally translated it is Hollowland.

I know, but most (or at least many) Americans think Holland is its own nation. Some might, at least, just think it's an alternate name for it.

If they do, just tell them there's a North Holland and South Holland and that they're 2 separate entities.

I can't actually blame anyone for the confusion though, we like to write Holland on everything sports related, it's easier to yell.

I just spent an hour watching a go play/video review thing about a crickett game and it was totally worth it.

Because it's the first game ever to be cancelled after it was released.

I'm mostly on it, with the exception of that mess that used to be Yugoslavia, also forget Moldova, Bulgaria and Belarus. Pretty much everything "new" in the 1990's or later is problematic as I was mostly out of the school-aged geography classes and not staring at maps so much anymore. Smiley: frown

I never paid any attention in those classes, simply because as long as you have a general idea where things are you know all you need to and if you do need to know specifics it's a matter of minutes or even seconds to look up.
Sure, when I was in school my phone didn't have google maps yet but the internet was already around.

My stomach gained sentience and declared a revolution. I imagine death will shed some pounds.

There's some funny stuff on those maps. I especially appreciated the humor of the guy/gal who wrote in "Australia" and "Eurodisney" and the person who named Sweden and Finland "Cold as ****." There were lots of other gems too - the person who wrote "My mom's from here! Hi Mom!" and then drew an arrow and wrote "Sorry mom" with a frown face, and the person who apologized to, presumably, their geography teacher.

Before looking at the map, I would have bet that I could get 80-90% correct. After looking at it, my only comment is that I learned European geography before the Cold War ended, and all those countries to the right were "U.S.S.R."
