The best screenshot of a modded Skyrim I've seen was a naked viking swimming in cabbages. I don't know how or why but it was brilliant.

That sounds brilliant.

Sadly enough I'm lacking in screen shots for large naked vikings, but that's more personal preference than lack of opportunity. There's certainly no shortage of bare-chested burly figures in that game.

How do you have time for work and kids and games?

I barely have time for work.

No homework. Smiley: wink

Really though work doesn't come home with me often, I try to make a point of that. I work hard for my 40+ ish hours a week, and then that's it. I probably am giving up a good bit of potential earnings that way, but so be it. Not that I have a relaxing home life or anything. When I get home I pretty much take over the kids and the wife will either take a break and hide in the other room, or get busy with things she wasn't able to accomplish during the day. It's an evening of feeding/bathing/teaching/playing with them and trying to relax a little myself. The kids go down at 8, and that gives me (us) a couple of hours to relax before bed, which is game time and exercise time and whatever else I can fit in once I get the dishes done and pick up the last of the toys.

That being said I still feel like I'm constantly fighting exhaustion and probably trying to hard to get the best of everything. Smiley: frown I'm definitely more tired now than I ever was during schooling, I guess one just learns to live with it (kids I tell ya... Smiley: rolleyes). There's certainly diminished mental capacity though, that part suck when doing a thinking job. But the no homework thing, that was big once I had finished the schooling (seriously those advanced degrees... yeesh...). It's nice just to leave work at work, at least most days.

That's because you work too much.

Edit: I'm too slow, also no homework is the best thing about work. People say that your yeas in school are the most fun you'll have but leaving work and being done with it for the day is the best feeling in the world.

Well, short of sex and drugs and booze and all that stuff.

Wait, are you actually in industry? Smiley: lol

I always assume scientist = academia, but that's obviously not true most of the time. And with academia I just have to look at my supervisor who is in 90+ hours a week. Well, maybe 85 because he takes walks with his PhD student. I do think he's an extreme case, but I also think with this kind of work there's no breaks anyway so we might as well think in a place that facilitates thinking.

The only reason I go home as early as I do is that I need time to buy food. The only reason I go home 3 hours earlier than I need on late days is that the buses don't run after 9:30. Smiley: mad

Not really; linky. It's a privately funded research/teaching hospital. Difference, I suppose, is I'm an employee of the University (i.e. general funds, not grant-funded) rather than someone trying to do a post-doc, or run their own lab, or something. They give me a salary to run instruments, analyze data, help write up stuff for researchers, etc. I'm not on anyone's grant or anything like that. We have clients, and do specific tests and small parts of research for dozens of different labs every year.

Most of the research that I'm heavily involved in comes from our own internal R&D stuff, or collaborations with other researchers. When I do have one of my own projects in the works, the hours add up a lot more then, especially when finalizing data, and submitting and such. Most of the time though, I put in 12ish hours of work running a sample, analyzing the data and helping the client understand the results and my name gets put somewhere in the middle of an author list, or buried in the acknowledgements section. Smiley: lol

Thankfully grant writing is something I get to avoid. I'll prepare quotes for people, and help plan things out, but for the most part it's in the individual researcher's hands.

Fresh veggies are better anyway.

Fresh veggies take even more time to buy.

Protein, I kind of used to feel like I wanted that type of position; no pressure to get first author X times a year, no grant writing, etc.
Now I know stuff about research councils and grants that some faculty don't even seem to know because it's interesting.

But then, grad school application forms are sometimes the best part of my day.

(Especially since there are these moments... today's research was figuring out that the function I need the source code for is proprietary while most of the software package it came in is open source, which means I'll spend all day tomorrow figuring out whether it's even the right function because the results are a wee bit erratic. I'll probably try and get this vector analysis lecturer I know for half an hour or so to work out a generalised, analytical version of that function myself because waiting to get a dev license on some random code that might not even be analytical is too high risk imo and I just need to figure out how to compute the Laplacian of a series, mostly.)

I try to keep my workweek between 30-35 hours in 4 days. Mostly because if I work more I start to go crazy...

TBH there's lots of time's I'm jealous of your kind of work. The thought of being able to focus on a single project or two and be able to follow an idea from beginning to end would be great. As is they'll be a 100+ different research projects I'll dabble in during a year, each one has their own unique needs and twists on the data. Trying to keep everything straight and moving forward is taxing at best (It's kinda like raid healing in WoW, with the extra twist that each of your different healing spells work differently on each player. Smiley: rolleyes).

And while me being first author on something is really a bit of a bonus, visibility for the lab is important. The supervising types like to see your name on lots of acknowledgment summaries and author lists, they want to see the people you do work for get grants funded, and they want the money we charge researchers to cover our costs as much as possible.

Thankfully though I'm not in hot water if one of my ideas doesn't pan out. If a researcher has a bad idea, and can just say "nope, this didn't work" and move on. They're the one left trying to salvage things, not an enviable position. Smiley: frown

Also, fresh fruit > fresh veggies. Smiley: nod

Life is about choices, you can't afford everything! Smiley: motz

Besides kids don't eat veggies much, they eat more fruit. Best spend the money on something fresh they'll benefit from. Smiley: nod

Hey guys, I'm not dead! My laptop broke last month, and so I was without a computer for a couple weeks. Then I just forgot to check in here. Tonight I'm procrastinating writing a paper. Do you feel used and dirty yet?

also, I got a new kitten. I think almost all of you have me on facebook, so you should be able to see that.

The thing is, while I have ideas for my project and scribblings that look like srs maths, I have till February to make it work. If it works, I get first author on a paper that has the potential to get a crapload of citations. If it doesn't, it's time intensive enough that I might just be screwed. My supervisor keeps saying that it's technically a PhD level project.

I can solve it numerically and it becomes a bit more trivial, and a bit less useful. That'd definitely give me time to do some applications work and get second author on some rather irrelevant papers that no one's gonna cite, but I'd love to at least set up our next PhD student to continue my stuff, so it's a matter of "how much sleep do you need this year?"

Similarly, at graduate level... I've been talking to this amazing guy who'd be like my dream supervisor for a few days now, and my project proposal is right up his alley, but it's a very high effort and high risk kind of project and he basically said I need to do applications at MPhil level for now (because the PhD programme doesn't exist yet) but should just apply for that with him and stay on for the PhD.

At least at PhD level there are a few years to get this stuff done and it seems common practice for supervisors to just kind of dump extra applications work on students. Smiley: lol

Anyway, it sounds like you have a secure job, which is awesome.

I don't actually get Aethien's sentiment because I like this stuff enough to prioritise it over my private life most of the time.

Why aren't you on Facebook? Rebel or tired of people posting entirely irrelevant information there?
