Recount and hostile groupsFollow

#1 Jun 04 2011 at 2:22 PM Rating: Decent
So I was running regular Halls of Origination when I had one of the most hostile groups I have ever encountered. I have gotten very used to seeing myself on top of the DPS meter in every instance pulling a consistent 9k. It's not super awesome but I just turned 85 yesterday and I'm still not geared enough to get into heroics. A boomkin commented on how good his DPS was considering he was in healing gear. He was pulling 4k and I told him that was horrible. Suddenly I had the entire group calling me a scrub and the tank (druid) took exception to this and decided one up me on the charts.

Now according to my recount, the tank in DPS form was pulling 10k (which he was quite proud of considering his item level was 355 and mine was 327) but the boomkin (who was talking the most crap) was still hovering around 4k. So here is my question: When he posted his recount data, it showed me on the bottom. But when I posted mine, I was right behind the tank (who went cat) by around 800 DPS. How come his recount was showing me so low? And since when did overall DPS for the entire dungeon (except during special fights when you do insane DPS like on grim batol) not count anymore? I'm arcane spec'd by the way. Is 9k just not very good for normal instances?

If I remember correctly, Recount does not work accurately on cross server groups. It will always show discrepancies.

As far as your DPS; was the dungeon going smoothly? Was everything dying in a timely manner? Then DPS was fine, as long as the healer was not straining to make it through each pull.

Mages have great DPS. Depending on your spec, of course, you will be averaging anywhere between 10-20K, once fully in 333 blues. I prefer Fire myself, just because I like to blow crap up in a huge fiery explosion.

Things went smoothly as always actually. I never pulled aggro and I even set up a table in the beginning. I was just wondering why the recounts were so different.

It could also be a difference between what he was recording on, was he recording every fight (including trash) for the entire dungeon or reporting a boss fight the same as you? If it was including trash I wouldn't be surprised if he beat you in DPS as arcane's AoE is quite mediocre (or at least it was when I quit).

More importantly, who was on the top of the damage meters? If someone else links a different report than you, look at the numbers for HIM, and then look at YOUR numbers for YOU and see which is higher, if it's bugging you.
Discrepencies of distance, pugs, and other factors will get recount to display differently every so often, especially if one of you has a very old version of the addon.

Good point, damage > dps for the most part.

Especially talking Arcane. I mean, the OP can be nuking the HELL out of the mob, stopping to regen mana for half the fight, then nuking to death at the very end.

You can also gimick the recount by clearing it and restarting it. For example, on a big pull, a CAT DPS can spike the DPS numbers by spaming AOE. If the cat wanted to make you look bad, he could have reset his Recount. Entered the trash pull, then shown you to be behind.

**I have no clue about Boomkins - I have an 85 druid, but never - not even once - have I spec'd him for DPS caster....

This isn't a mystery.

The Bear went Cat for a fight and linked the numbers for that fight. To be honest, 10k Kitty while tanking is very impressive, because standing in front + Kitty doesn't work well at all. He probably would have been better off just going Bear.

The obvious thing here is that at least a few of these guys were in a premade - same server probably same guild - and so you said something to offend one of them and it sent the other(s) into a nerdrage.

Besides that, positive feedback is always better. I wouldn't be surprised if the Boomkin was also a fresh 85 - yes his DPS was abhorrent but he probably just changed spec/gear/etc and was happy to see an improvement. Over the internet, tone and attitude are often hard to convey, and people will just assume that when something is said, it is being said in the worst/degrading/spiteful way possible.

From my experience, if you encounter a premade when you're in DF PUG, especially when you're DPS, it's best to keep your mouth shut as much as possible due to how easy it becomes for them to boot you from the group. Something only needs to be said if the group is unable to progress due to shortcomings (which is nigh impossible in Regulars.)

Usually just let it go. Being in the right has very little to do with it when you're fighting online, and winning those fights generally nets no benefits.

I gotta agree with this, and much of the previous posters.

I'd like to add that gear alone may not account for poor dps either. I had a lock in my ZG run the other day, in near full crafted/boe epics ... and still topped out at 5k dps on one of the boss fights.

Fail is as fail does.
