Macro (newb) questionsFollow

Hi there:

Would anyone care to share helpful hunter macros? I'm having some issues with mine. I never fooled around with them too much in the past, but now that I am using the dungeon finder (sweet!) I've created some.

First - I have an /assist macro obviously, and I was just typing in the tanks name when we zoned into the instance. But last night I was grouped with someone who had umlauts or other special characters in their name. Is there any way to copy/past their name into the box?

Second - I'm trying to make my basic PvE, soloing start macro. I did the basics - hunter's mark, pet attack, and I can get autoshot to begin after that but if I try to do hunter'smark/petattack/black arrow, it tells me the spell isn't ready yet. (cooldown I guess). Is there a command like "wait 1 second" I can insert there?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if there is an add-on or anything out there that will let you copy and paste in game, but an add-on would probably be your best bet.

You can't have Hunters Mark and Black Arrow in the same macro because of the global cooldown and there is no command like that.

Apparently I did not add a macro section to the guide. I should probably do it. Here is a page I did on my blog for some hunter macros, though it's going to be slightly out of date right now.

I'm assuming you would want to use /assist for like a misdirection purpose or something? Well a common misdirection macro using /focus would be,

Misdirection

    #showtooltip Misdirection
    /focus [modifier:ctrl] target
    /stopmacro [modifier:alt]
    /cast [target=focus, help] Misdirection; [target=pet] Misdirection

Where you simply have to select your tank type /focus and then use that macro and your misdirection will be guided at him.

As for your all in one, no it will not work, hunter's mark and Black arrow are on GCD and therefore the macro would fail. There is no reason to macro black arrow into your opening shot as you won't open with it anyways. You would simply need to take out black arrow and it would work fine applying HM and then sending your pet in to attack and then you can go on like normal.

For /assist... the last time I did this was in EQ, so maybe I'm missing something. An assist macro was useful (like, /assist tankname) to make sure that we DPS types were targeting the right mob and not going to aggro something we didn't intend to, by mis-clicking.

What is the strategy for that?

You might be able to do something like,

/assist [target=focus]

but I've never played around with assist so I'm not really sure how it works. I'm assuming it would automatically switch your current target to the target of the tank. If you have room on your UI and have some raid frames or something you could always show your focus and the target of your focus and simply click that target and you would know every time they change. But that takes up room on your UI if you don't have the space for it.

Assist will change your target.

Using /cast [@focustarget,exists,harm,nodead], [exists, harm, nodead] Hunter Spell should cast your spell on your focus's target regardless of who you are targeting and your actual target if you don't have a focus. I use a /cast [exists, harm, nodead] Smite; [target=targettarget, exists, harm, nodead] Smite macro for my priest, same basic idea.

Really need to change target= into @ as it looks nicer. I'm pretty sure I also don't need the first Smite and the semicolon should be a comma. Anyway...

Also, the following should work;
/cast Hunters Mark
/petattack
/startattack

As only HM is on the GCD so the rest of the commands should execute. Might have to move the /cast HM part to the end of the macro, not 100% on that aspect.

Really, you guys don't use /assist? That does seem odd. Being able to hit one button and everyone automatically goes to the tank's target is a Godsend... or more importantly, no one clicks on the wrong mob and pulls aggro, reducing efficiency... I start my rotation without losing those seconds at the start of the fight. Is this not something that is used in higher end raiding in WOW?

(It would all be fine if people didn't use those stupid special characters in their names just to be cute... Grumble)

In 5 mans, this really won't work at all. When I'm tanking I'm constantly swapping targets. I suppose it might be better in cata, since everyone won't be super overgeared, but after the initial couple hits I'll still be target switching to put lacerates on everything. Better to just get a good addon like tidyplates.

If you need a user's name and it's a real mess to type, like Thálƒòr (I made it up just for the sake of having something as an example. No offense if someone actually has this name.)

If they say ANYTHING at all and you want to capture their name to paste into a macro...

Click their name in the chat box, so you're whispering to them. Then Shift+click their name in the chat box again. This will put their name as text on your chat line.

highlight their name that is in your chat line (that you would say if you pressed enter again). Then copy or cut to the clipboard as normal. (CTRL+X or CTRL+C for windows users)

Next go to your macro and Paste their name in where you need it (CTRL+V)

The set focus approach will work well, but if you really want to catch those names to paste into a macro, this is one way to do it.

As the druid tank who replied said, /assist is almost useless with a tank that is tab targeting mobs to gain threat. But really, do you guys really need help figuring out what to shoot at? It should be pretty much common sense by now. If mobs are not marked, then its usually because everyone in the party knows the deal already. Or should. But you should have a pretty good idea what you need to be shooting at by this late in the game.

Target your tank. Right click on the tank's portrait, scroll down to Set Focus. Target is now set as the focus so all macro's that have target=focus should work

There are tanks that just click all over the place after marked mob is dead and they try to target a new mob. Some tanks are better than others at targeting.

As a ranged class I stand way behind the scrum, I don't know who's targeting what when 2 or 3 mobs are surrounding the melee classes, I rely on marks to know if we're all focused on the same mob, if a CC mob gets lose, or which mob the tank is holding most aggro for, that way I don't pull something random my way. Marks are useful for many reasons.

Example.
Skull over target A
X over target B
square over target C

if I see a square running around before the skull goes down, I know it's not good, I can then anticipate and adapt to the situation.
