So, I'm leveling my Death Knight, after putting him aside for a long, long time. When I hit 80 (hopefully mid-next month), I plan on dual speccing Frost DPS and Blood Tank (Since I hear Blood will be the tanking tree).

Are there any resources available for budding tanks? Like, for example, how to get geared through heroics or how to gear? I know on EJ and MMO-Champion they have DPS resources, but I can't find an updated tanking information guide/thread.

Blood being the Cata tank tree is no reason to choose it now--the entire DK class (and blood in particular) is changing so much. Pick the tree you are most comfortable with (I advise you start as Frost).

As for gearing, run instances as DpS and need whatever tank gear you can. Spend your emblems on tank items. There are some nice (and cheap) beginner tank items. Get JC and BS or Mining to cap for a large stam boost. And JC will give you two huge pools of stamina from trinkets.

Maybe I used a poor choice of words. The only reason I was going to spec Tank was to help my guild in Cataclysm. For leveling, I've been Blood, simply because it's the one I've known for a long time. I really want to start trying Dual-Wield DPS, since I'm already so familiar with 2h DPS. I just was curious what stats to look at for tanking as a DK.

Stamina and Armor are your biggest priorities. Don't gem for avoidance unless the socket bonus is large (and then use a /stam gem). Never gem for threat. Download Rawr if you really want to maximize your TTL.

Other than that... Str, Hit and Expertise are the threat stats. Agilitiy is so-so on a weapon while gearing (never on anything else)--it gives a small amount of crit, dodge and armor. But once you are getting raid drops, I doubt you'll ever want a Hunter weapon.

Your stat priorities on weapons should be the same as regular blood, with the exception that Expertise rating is worth DOUBLE what it is worth to them until you hit 26.

Please learn how to control mobs and position them rapidly. Tanks that can't do that are annoying. I don't care if it 1 mob or 20, get them under control, in a good spot and stop moving around.

Its tanking not dance dance revolution.

Bears are the worst offenders. I don't know why they feel the need to jump around instead of just backing up...

Jumping makes me tank better.

True story.

Bears wouldn't be jumping around if they had a couple more buttons to hit while tanking.

But bad or total lack of positioning is somewhat of a plague. There are way too many people who just don't realize that getting stabbed in the back hurts pretty damn bad.

A couple weeks ago I quit a heroic FoS group with my pretty well geared priest because I simply couldn't keep up the tank's health without sacrificing everyone else in the group. This wasn't a matter of bad gear on the tank, but simply that dude not bothering to prevent mobs from hitting him in the back.

Yes, but hitting the back arrow a little bit will cause all the mobs to reposition in front of you and will leave them in the bulk of the placed AoE. There's no reason to run around like a maniac.

I highly recommend frost for a new tank, especially once you can get Howling Blast.

The amount of snap threat is great, especially for when you are learning and have AoE-happy puggers.

I tried to heal a bear druid once in pit of saron and he kept taking unhealable damage at the hill where you fight the groups of melee skeletons and frost mage skellies, by unhealable i mean casting holy light over and over again didn't save him. He wasn't undergeared, he had all 232 gear and a few icecrown pieces (oxheart and one t10 i think).

I discovered why when we had a 10 minute argument about whether you can dodge attacks from behind; which ultimately broke up the group. His method was to aggro the mobs with a few swipes, then turn his back on the melee mobs to focus on the caster. But it was ok, because tanks can totally dodge from behind and i was just a bad healer...

As far as resources go I don't know of many, the faqs here mostly haven't been updated in ages due to lack of interest. Basically though you might want to look into the tempered sauronite, daunting, and tempered titansteel pieces since they're all pretty cheap.

If you have wyrmrest rep they have a NICE pair of boots and tanking chest though. Argent crusade (I think that's it.) Has an amazing stam enchant for the head slot.

Just remember to stay above 535 defense and get your stam up as was already mentioned, armor will flow in on it's own.

The guides here haven't been updated since there are better ones elsewhere (such as Zam's partner site, Tankspot) and ours would just be ripoffs of theirs with some personal opinion thrown in. Everything general, like how the class works with runes/RP, are still up to date because they haven't really changed.

Just no reason to have an Unholy DpS guide, for instance, when the one in EJ is quickly updated to include the latest gear/changes and is pretty clear on what to do for all gear levels.

I suppose that's true Idiggory though it never hurts to have yet another C&P guide up there (As long as you credit the original writer.) But yeah linking the guides on the other sites couldn't hurt either. Elitist jerks really does have pretty much everything you need to know about final tier gearing and raiding, though they kind of slack off in early gearing (As in there is none, but that's not the point of their site.)

Hmm, guess I'll mention another piece of gear while I'm responding, the trinket in regular halls of lightning will do AMAZING things for helping you reach uncrittable early on.
