Quick preview of upcoming fire changes (talents are from left to right, *denotes a change to the talent):

Tier 1:
*Master of Elements: now 2 ranks at 15/30%

Burning Soul

*Incineration: removed

*Improved Fire Blast: moved from tier 2

Tier 2:
Ignite

*Fire Power: Increases the damage of your Fire spells by 1/2/3% and gives your Flame Orb a 33/66/100% chance to explode at the end of its duration.

Blazing Speed

Impact (no useful raid utility yet... awesome ideas welcome)

Tier 3:
*Cauterize (new, 2 ranks): You have a 50/100%% chance that an attack which would otherwise kill you will instead bring you to 40% of your maximum health. However, you will burn for 12% of your maximum health every second for the next 4 sec. This effect cannot occur more than once per minute.

*Blast Wave: A wave of flame radiates outward from the target location, damaging all enemies caught within the blast for X Fire damage and are slowed by 75% for 3 sec.

*Molten Shields (new 1 rank, Blazing Speed is a prereq): Reduces the global cooldown of your Mage Ward spell by 1.5 sec and your Mage Ward triggers the Blazing Speed effect when it dissipates from absorbing damage.

*Improved Scorch: Reduces the mana cost of your Scorch spell by 50/100%

Tier 4:
Pyromaniac

Combustion

*Hot Streak (the instant Pyroblast no longer costs mana)

*Firestarter (new, 1 rank): Your Molten Armor allows you to cast the Scorch spell while moving instead of reducing the chance you are critically hit.

Tier 5:
Improved Flamestrike

Dragon's Breath

Molten Fury

Tier 6:
*Critical Mass: Your Pyroblast and Scorch spells have a 33/66/100% chance to cause your target to be vulnerable to spell damage, increasing spell critical strike chance against that target by 5% and lasts 30 sec.

Tier 7:
Living Bomb

Is it me or did I see a useful blast wave?? I wish they did that for Flamestrike though. Too bad...

Some pretty cool changes there.

I'm liking the improved scorch+scorch while moving, although I am rarely in need of casting something while moving between living bomb, instant pyros, and fireblast.

Blastwave doesn't look very different to me, they basically turned it into a splash move that boomkins/shaman use from what it looks like.

Cauterize is definitely a cool ability, if not even a little OP, sounds like a good way to rack up a repair bill though, lol.

I'm glad they fixed firepower to be better.

The critical mass talent is excellent, finally able to use a spell that is part of our normal 'rotation' to keep the debuff up instead of wasting dps on scorch.

overall 2-thumbs-up.

As for impact, what if it was another proc ability that gave a higher crit chance (or something) for fireblast? Like what if it allowed you to finish the dots on the target all at once (ignite, pyroblast, living bomb)

I'm not even bothering to test Mage until next week when they totally revamp fire (and, I'm assuming, fix a lot of the problems with Frost/Arcane).

But, just for some at-a-glance data:

Mages start with Fireball and nothing else, which does 20 damage with another 8 over 4 seconds with a 1.5 cast time. My Worgen, upon creation, has 9 SP. But the SPC is so low that I'm still only averaging 20 damage (well, like 20.1) I have 119 mana and FB costs 10, with 9 Mp5 out of combat (so I guess they nerfed the early level buff). If you are taking mobs out one right after the other, you WILL feel mana starved. And you don't start with water. So I'm hoping the mana reverts back. Your crit rate starts around 4%.

The next spell you get is Arcane Missiles at level 3. It does 17x3 damage, but is free since it is now a proc spell with a 30% rate off of other damaging ones. It's technically better DpS and more efficient than Fireball, but significantly less fun to use. The first missile doesn't fire until you are 1 second in, and it has a channeling time of 3 seconds. Plus, you will lose a missile if something hits you (and you have no snare, so you probably will get hit). And you don't get the proc until the spell launches, naturally, which means you are already casting another Fireball. And it might not be attractive to wait 2 seconds for AM to finish the target when you could just hit FB again and kill it faster.

I find myself not wanting to use it when it was supposed to be attractive and fun to hit for all specs early on. So all you do for the first 5 levels, unless really worried about mana, is hit FB.

Then you get Fire Blast at level 5, which is actually good. It's similar damage-to-mana as Fireball and is instant. At 5, FB is 42 damage for 27 mana. Fireball is 27 damage (plus the 8 DoT) for 14 mana. So, yeah, less efficient. But it breaks he monotony of spamming Fireball.

After that, you get Frostbolt at 7, FN at 8 and Counterspell at 9. Then your specialization.

Other important spells:

AB at 36
Blizzard at 52
Cone of Cold 18
Flamestrike at 44
Scorch at 26
FFB at 56
Ice Lance 28
AE at 12
Poly at 14
Blink at 16

I REALLY hope they give Mage leveling a really close look, because it is awful right now. It's more fun to alternate between FBolt and FBall on live than the current low-level play styles.

Oh, and the Water Elemental is glitched so it does 300 damage a hit at level 10. XD

Painful! What happened to the idea that the iconic mage spell which shares a name with the company needs to be prominent? I suppose delaying ranged AoE abilities until tanks can handle it is ok, but Blizzard... it would be strange not having that until so late.

You really don't need aoe anymore (at all, let alone just at lower levels). In Wailing Caverns a fire mage can pretty much 2 shot the elites.

Although it was fun to AoE grind for a little bit or at least for some packs that would be easy to do so (pirates, etc).

That stuff was amazing fun... I really enjoyed it when I grinded those levels there.

Seems that, for deep Arc followers, that the AM is proccing the slow spell, as well.
