I've looked around a little and not found very much in the way of useful information about soloing instances.
I realize that in a way it's a ridiculous question to ask since there are so many variables, but does anyone have any good rules of thumb about when (as a priest of whatever flavor) soloing an instance becomes viable? Instances that are roughly half your level (50's soloing instances up to around 25 plus or minus a couple of levels)? Or do you valiantly forge ahead and if you die before you clear the first room, that's too high?
I've made it through the Mast Room in Deadmines at 45 without a lot of trouble running Smite spec. It was exhausting though.
Just curious really as I don't do a lot of groups but like to see the sights. There's been a lot of offhand talk about it here lately so it seemed like a good time to ask.
My multi-80-level mate (specced holy/disc) and I have worked through everything up through the 40's as a duo but he's not always around to provide cover.

You should be able to solo instances that are 20 levels below you. As 80, I've solo'd Ramparts, which was the first instance of The Burning Crusade. I'm sure there are priests out there who have done higher, but it becomes more work the higher you go.
Be aware that even lower dungeons can get you killed if you take on too many mobs at once. Also, if you take on a raid like Karazan or Zul Garub, it's different than soloing a 5 man. Some bosses will be no problem, and you can basically Holy Nova adds and then take the boss down. Other bosses have tricks that don't lend themselves to solo play very well.

In fresh 80 gear I could do up to Steamvaults okay, though not as fast as I would've liked, and not on heroic. I did those Coilfang instances a lot when grinding Cenarion rep for my hippogriff, and I preferred to have help on the bosses. From this I conclude that 20 levels should be comfortable and 10 start to get uncomfortable.
I recommend Disc for soloing instances, simply because the mobs can't break through your super shields and you can take more on at once that way (as they can't interrupt casting).

I think what has been said so far is correct - 5-mans 20 levels below you shouldn't pose a problem.
As you go higher up, you'll encounter more problems and priests definitely aren't the best class for soloing stuff, and then it is up to you to decide if you personally can do it or not. I've decided I can't do MgT heroic and won't try anymore. I have also decided that I could probably do parts of Karazhan but would need to think about it - it's at a difficulty level where I can't just rush in and kill everything in one pull spamming Holy Nova.
If you really want to solo crazy stuff, level a DK.

The pet is pretty significant as a super health potion. Pop Raise Dead, Vampiric Blood and Death Pact, and the pet, assuming you have 50k health, would return 30k health. 3-minute cooldown.
Anyway, I haven't really soloed much on my Priest. Cloth armor (even with Inner Fire) makes squishy sounds. I've soloed a lot of TBC dungeons on my Druid and Death Knight, though.
