I Am A Team Player, but..Follow

#1 Jun 07 2010 at 2:35 AM Rating: Decent
Greetings,
I enjoy supporting and love spreading.
I always played White mage/priest jobs in MMORPGs.

I want to in this game also, but I heard the community in this game sucks. You don't depend on others but yourself, this game emphasize on soloing more, and I'm not sure how it works soloing as a priest, but logically, they're not that good.

My job is a dependent job, so I'm going to need a team to rely on, so since I don't have friends and I'm complete stranger in this game, do you advise me to stay away from priest? and pick something like, hunter?

Somehow I do not think that in this priest forum you will get "the advice to stay away from priest and choose hunter instead".

Hunter of all classes! ;-)

Hey, the God Emperor of Hunters is here, too. He might tell you to play druid, though.

Firstly, you don't have to solo. Starting at level 10, you can enter PvP battlegrounds and heal the peeps there (although it is advisable to start at level 17 or so because all the level 19s will crush you), you get put into a group with 9 other random people and the queues aren't that long.

More importantly, at level 15 you can use the Random Dungeon tool and - especially as a healer - quickly find dungeon groups, again with random people, often not even from your server.

Finally, priests are great to solo. You can specialise your character through talent points, and you have the option to spec Shadow which limits your healing capabilities a bit, especially at higher levels, but makes for great soloing/damage dealing, or you can go for Smite spec (which we all love here), which is a healing spec at its core but takes some talents that allow you to deal decent Holy damage. If you're interested in that, you can ask and 3 people will tell you how to spec like that.
Priests in WoW are easier to solo with than anything but maybe BST in FFXI.

Also, there are other healing classes in the game, being Paladin, Druid and Shaman. I've got one of each, although my paladin isn't really at any level where she'd heal yet.
I personally dislike Shaman healing as it is right now, but it used to be nearly as awesome as priests, and tastes might differ. I've come to like druid healing. My druid is only level 29, but at earlier levels you can just go into Cat form to deal damage even if you're specced for healing.

At level 40 you have the option to get Dual Spec, allowing you to have two talent specialisations you can switch between, so you can go for a healing spec and a damage dealing spec if you want. It costs quite a bit of money, though.

If you want help choosing a healing class, here's a breakdown for you:
Paladins do single-target (or 2-target) healing and are quite amazing at that. They also only have 2 buttons they need to press for healing, pretty much.
Druids have many different healing-over-time effects and that's basically the key to their healing style. They don't do big numbers but do a fair bit of healing continuously.
Shamans have Chain Heal. It heals like 3 targets, I think. They also have totems, which are cool. I think shamans can fill every healing role to a degree, but Chain Heal is their awesome spell.
Discipline Priests mostly mitigate damage before it comes in instead of healing it, and also excel at burst healing (doing more healing than anyone else on a single target for a short amount of time). They're traditionally single target healers, but shielding everything in sight can be very effective, too.
Holy priests are the best at group heals, but they can do a bit of everything else, as well, when needed.

Okay, I'm finished now.

There's a thread with pretty much this exact question still on the first page. So go read that instead of asking me to summarize it for you.

But, I'll summarize it for you: priests are not difficult to solo.

In fact, no class is difficult to solo. At all. This game was designed so you could play solo all the time, if you want. Of course, if you want to heal with your priest, you'll need to have somebody to heal. The community is like most communities. Some people suck, some don't.

I'm more likely to make a cheap joke about the OP's love for spreading.

Edit, I can't help but say that I ******* love my new avatar.

The community isn't too bad, really. Not much worse than those I've seen on other MMORPGs. It's just more varied because it's larger. If you join the pvp wrong server you'll feel like you've been indoctrinated into a cult of people adhering to the lol-god, walking around Orgrimmar all day saying nothing but his name. But altogether, there's plenty of nice folks out there. And even the stewpid ones will at least recognize your use as a healer. The only thing that might happen to you is random 5-man groups where DPS get themselves killed and then shout at you for not healing them.

I see, that's very encouraging.
I liked the idea of dual-spec healing and shadow. Also smite spec, which I'll look it up. =]

I wouldn't have a problem finding a guild to stick to end-game right?

Thanks people.

Healers are often needed, but part of the responsibility is yours. The LFG tool offers a way to gear up and gain experience. If you do gear up, gain experience, and become a skilled healer, you should be able to find a guild that suits your play style.

Priests are awesome. Perhaps you should try playing one, rather than listening to people who down everything.

I could choose to play any class of healer. For my main, I choose priest.

I loved that movie. But I'm also a huge Danny Elfman fan, so I'm a bit biased.

You can find an endgame guild no matter what you play as long as you're reasonably skilled, willing to learn and have background knowledge about your class. For that last one, you seem to be on the right path already.

For example, our guild is currently mostly looking to fill damage dealer spots. It's a bit of a strange situation, but that sort of thing happens.
