Woo hoo, S (Mr. FWB, I'm just going to start calling him by his initial, it's easier) is coming back into town tonight! I'm running the box office for a new play tonight, and then after that we should be able to get together. We've been sending nasty messages back and forth over facebook the last few days, and I can tell he is REALLY riled up. Smiley: grin

Also, I learned how to sword fight today! There's a video of it posted up on facebook. Although we're only using pvc pipe there, no swords yet. Pretty fun stuff!

No, it's what us watch nerds call a "tool watch". A watch designed for a specific purpose, that's not necessarily designed for beauty, though some find beauty in their purpose.

That watch is designed to be a diving watch; since I spend so much time in and around the water and I'd also like a rugged watch capable of going anywhere, that was my obvious choice.

PigtailsOfDoom wrote:
I just hope you didn't spend your entire raise on the new watch. Smiley: grin

Nah, the watch was €325 with shipping included in that (30 for shipping from Germany to the US). Which comes out to about $400. Very, very reasonable since the watch it's based on generally goes for around $4000.

The watch it's based on, in case anyone is wondering, has a hand-made movement and is a COSC certified chronometer (it will only gain/lose 4 secs daily once set). My watch has an ETA movement, which is a bought movement; the rest of the watch is then hand-made, like the Rolex Submariner it's based on.

And yes, some watches are stupidly expensive.

My grail watch is the IWC Portuguese Automatic in blue/white/silver: $12,400.

Screenshot

Grail watch is the term for the watch one would have if money were no object; the watch one hopes to one day own.

In that case, it makes sense. And watches are pretty damn expensive, if you want anything not hideous anyway. I was looking for a good belt Friday (Seriously, how do so many brands get designing a belt, a single strip of leather, so very very wrong?) and checked out some watches while I was walking around town. So many watches are 1: The size of a clock tower, what the @#%^ is up with that? I don't want a watch with a 2 inch diameter on my wrist, it's bulky and hideous, I'm not trying to imitate Flavor Flav or some sh*t like that. And 2: Why do pretty much all watches below around €250 look so goddamn cheaply made? The only decent watches I saw for less than that were by Danish Design, although they all had some hideous fake leather strap.

I'm still using the watch I paid $3 for a few months back. The only things I don't like about it, is that it doesn't have an option to beep at me at the start of the hour, and it doesn't tell me what the date is. I can live with that though.

Tonight was awesome. The show was great! Very, very goofy and funny. Even though an ex of mine was in it. >.> Do you guys have any exes that you just really don't like being around because you look at them and wonder to yourself "What the @#%^ was I thinking?!" That's this guy for me. I was young and stupid, he is 25 years older than me, and convinced me to date him for about 2 months because I didn't have the self esteem at the time to realize that if he was a friend worth having, he wouldn't pressure me to date him. He's a good character actor, but that's about it... I've never seen him do anything serious, just goofy stuff. I try to be civil to him in public, but I just hate being around him. Anyways, I had S come meet me at the theater after the show was over, and the ex got to see me walk to my car with him. That gave me a good giggle. I'm sure he'll be wondering now. Had a lot of fun with S tonight too. He came over for about 5 hours I think? I just got back from taking him home. Smiley: grin NRE is awesome...

It's not like you get a watch to tell the time with anyway, who doesn't always have a cellphone with them to tell the time? A watch is mostly a cool accessory.

I do, for one. It's a lot more convenient to glance at my watch than dig my phone out of my pocket. Also, watch=water resistant; phone, not so much.

'Cause you're checking how long it is till your lunch break is over? That was always my reason. Smiley: lol

Also, at least your mosquitoes don't potentially carry malaria. I went to the park on Friday, they didn't tell me where we were headed so I assumed it'd be the market and didn't bring mosquito spray, resulting in lots of bites on my feet.

The last week of work, we've been sent home early because it hit 44 degrees, and we're wearing heavy protective clothing on top of that, while lifting really heavy crap. I hate the summer. I'm almost tempted to move out west and work in the oil fields. Although apparently it's likely that I'll end up doing a lot of coke and become an alcoholic. It seems like it could be a reasonable trade off.

It's likely because those watches (around $300 US, 250 euros) are fashion watches. Fashion watches will generally use a chinese or japanese quartz movement and sh*tty parts and slap their name on it and because their fashion name is on it, people will buy it (see Michael Kors watches, which are Fossil watches with Fossil crossed out and MK written on them).

As for the trend of watches getting bigger and bigger, it's similar to guys that like to modify their cars. It's flashy and they think it attracts women (and some women probably think watch size has some correlation to penis size).

You're probably looking for a "classic" watch. Maximum dial size of 39mm, clean face, well made. My largest watch is 42mm, and that's the largest I'll go because I have medium-sized wrists.

Boobies!

Also, your hair is shorter than mine. Smiley: tongue

Edit because Theo squeezed in between mine and Pigtails' post:
It's not only guys who wear the big ben clocks around their wrists, my sister has a watch that's at least 50mm in diameter and a good 10-15mm thick and she's a really thin person, it just looks odd.

I quite like watches like this, just with a good looking strap and not a hideous fake leather one like that. Something well made and minimalistic. I really love the idea of the number/dial plate or whatever it's called because it's pushing to what the minimum of what a watch is and that fascinates me.

I've got fairly small wrists too so any watch larger than average is just going to look ridiculous on me.

Edit 2: Also, have you seen H. R. Giger's work with Swatches? He's done some really fascinating things with the watch shape, although I don't think any of his watch furniture ever got realized (sadly).

Oh god, a Movado knockoff. I guess if you really like that style that's cool, but even a buddy of mine that has 2-3 Movados doesn't wear them much anymore. They're kind of the border between actual watches and fashion crap.

I just don't understand how you'd tell time on those watches without any markings at all (there are no decent watches that feature blank faces). At that point, you might as well wear a bracelet for all the good it does you. I get that you like the design, but watches—even when they're a fashion piece—are meant to serve a function.

And yeah Aeth, I know what you mean, a few girls I work with wear bigger/bulkier watches than I do. But they're fashion watches (except the girl that wears a guy's ~45mm Vic) and fashion watches are basically crap.

EDIT: Nope, haven't seen any of his work. I tend to not pay attention to Swatch very much because I don't like a lot of their stuff. The only brand I really like that they own is Hamilton. The rest of their stuff is really bland and common-place (which is why I like IWC, JLC, A. Lange & Söhne, etc; they innovate and make really elegant stuff).

You can tell the time on those, just not very exact. It's not like a watch serves much function when I always have my phone in my pocket or sit behind a PC so I can check the time just as quickly on those. I like those Movado's too, they're cool even if they're impractical. You'd probably need 4 markings for the watch to be practical, more isn't really needed I think.

Also, Giger's work with watches aren't really watches anymore, it's gothic art like the rest of his work but he worked with the basic shape of a swatch. He also made stools and chairs with the basic shape of a swatch.

Movados are a brand, they use a cheaper ETA movement and charge a premium for the name.

ETA is the dominant Swiss watch house but at least some of the better purchasers of their product actually embellish the movement, and embellish ETA's top product as at that. Kind of like the difference between a basic stock engine and a race car that is using a stock engine.

How do you find east on a map with no markings?

Solution: Up is default north on a map, which means east is right on the map.

My point is, you imagine where the markings are supposed to be and what they're supposed to read. Up is 12, right is 3, down is 6, left is 9. Now divide the space between each number into three. Each section represents an hour on the short "arm" (not sure what you call the pins that show the time) and five minutes on the long arm.

Granted, getting a precise reading is difficult, mostly because a lot of those watches don't display the seconds, but if you need to tell the exact time, you're better off with a phone connected to the internet so you can get the time from one of the atomic clocks around the world.

Someone who has played AC:Brotherhood, help!

So, after a long time of wondering whether or not to try AC, I finally decided to buy one of them, and I ended up with Brotherhood, as I thought the whole story of the series wouldn't matter to me so much.

However I was not aware that in this part of the series I would have to play in the 21st century with some fag called Desmond.
So the question is, is there alot of parts in this game where you have to play as Desmond?

Not a lot compared to the time spent inside the Animus, but why the hell did you not start with the first game? You went out and bought the sequel to the sequel...

Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed 2
    Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
    Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Assassin's Creed 3

It's like playing one of the DLC campaigns in Dragon Age 2 before playing any of the other games.

You're Desmond. Altaïr (AC1) and Ezio (AC2) are your ancestors and the Animus can access their memories through your genes. That's when you enter the virtual world and "become" one of them. You're doing what they're doing in order to solve The Mystery™ in the 21st century.

No wonder you're confused as all hell. If I remember correctly, Brotherhood opens up directly where AC2 ended. It's not a separate story, it's the second part of the second game (concluded in the third part: Revelations).

Edit: For your own sake, wait with Brotherhood until you've played the previous two games. The story in Assassin's Creed is like Mass Effect feat. JJ Abrams. You won't know what the @#%^ is going on by the end of it unless you know the entire story. It is mind-blowing.

I know it was a dumb thing to do, but this was the only game from the AC-series available at the store at the time I went there today, and I couldn't wait the few days it would've taken for it to arrive had I ordered it online.

Solution: Up is default north on a map, which means east is right on the map.
Britain is considered the start of the Western world, and Japan is considered the Eastern, which really boggles my mind when Britain is east of me and Japan is west.

What boggles my mind is that the Pacific Ocean is so ridiculously oversized because it's never really shown on maps.

Also, regarding watches, not really an option when I want the bangles on both my arms to match. Smiley: lol

That was slightly amusing, but seriously, half the reason I wear bangles is so I have something to keep my hands busy without moving around my scarf all the time.

Now, if they make watches disguised as bangles... please tell me they do? Smiley: lol

We totally need tophat and monocle smileys. That would be so awesome.

Getting hit on by drunk friends that are married is awkward. But, reminding them that you're in an open relationship and that you've told them before, is amusing. Having this conversation in front of a lover who is still new to the poly thing, and admits to having jealousy issues, while getting groped by said drunk friend, is again awkward. Last night was interesting lol. S took it in stride well though. And he did a hilarious rendition of the heavy metal song Little Pig last night. I was cracking up.

Sounds like fun.

I had a date yesterday. The guy is okay, but there is no real excitement... his hands are the softest hands ever, though.

I prefer bangles like this, actually. Well, normally I wear 2 on each arm or so... 4 max, more is so over the top. And I was hoping someone would google it for me, anyway. Smiley: lol

Was totally thinking of getting turquoise/gold (not real) ones and found a watch in the right style on ebay, but it's silver and not gold coloured. Meh. Plus, it'd be shipped from the US...
