So I'm taking that Political Compass test, and there's one "question" that makes me angry, because it's a ridiculous oversimplification.

"The rich are too highly taxed."

If you have no idea what taxes look like for someone like Warren Buffett, you'd probably agree or disagree based on how you view redistribution of wealth or social welfare.

But the crazy part of our country's tax code is that capital gains are only taxed 15%. So if Warren Buffett makes $1B on capital gains, the government only sees $150M (which seems like a lot, but it's a drop in the bucket for the government). Take ten people like Warren Buffett and say they all make $1B this year in capital gains; that's $1.5B for the government.

And that's awesome. But what if that was part of their income tax (since it actually is a type of income)? Well, then it's taxed at 35%. So instead of $150M each, they owe $350M each. $1.5B from ten billionaires becomes $3.5B.

This is really all that's necessary to tax the wealthy more. They don't need higher income taxes; they'll just cut their salaries to $1 like Steve Jobs did, and take options in stock, which is taxed at an insanely lower rate than income.

Boom. Lawyered.

So yes, I'm angry about the question. Continue on.

Edit: actually, taxes on capital gains are going up to 20% this year. So yippee, going in the right direction.

I missed your edit earlier... Chicago is actually one of the cities in the US that has the biggest problem with education. For the public schools in the suburbs and the well to do parts (where I'm guessing you are from), their schools are very good. In the lower income/inner city areas they are terrible. Schools are run down, have bizarre lesson plans, and huge drop out rates for high schoolers. I don't remember any of the personal stories I've read about Chicago off hand, but the one I quoted in a paper I wrote a few months back about the LA area was pretty bad.

In California they have a technical elective requirement. In Beverly Hills High School this elective has many different options like broadcast journalism, engineering, computer graphics, etc. In a nearby school in a lower income area (the name escapes me atm), their technical elective options are things like sewing, hairdressing and metal shop. They also have very limited AP classes, if any. They have rat infestations, and broken down bathrooms that don't work as well.

People keep saying that throwing more money at these low income schools won't fix them. That's probably true, but it would probably help quite a bit if there's some oversight to make sure the schools use the money to fix the buildings and the resources available, and not on sports programs or higher salaries for the administrators.

In the FAQ, one of the first questions is about the bias or oversimplification of the questions. There response is something along the lines of how they're looking for a gut reaction to certain buzz-words that wouldn't be tied to specific policies (like capital gains taxes). Capital gains taxes are actually going up to 23.8% at the top end due to the additional 3.8% investment tax in Obamacare. And I have to disagree and say that is going in exactly the wrong direction. Investment income can be a lot more transient than wages or salary. For example, why would someone invest in a US company when they could invest in a Canadian company where the tax rate is 21.5% compared to our 23.8% tax? Specifically, Canada taxes capital gains as part of income, but only 50% of the gain is taxed. Their top rate is 43%, so their top capital gains tax rate is 21.5%.

In any case, I think it's ludicrous to focus so much on making sure Warren Buffet pays his "fair" share when all the proposed tax rate increases on capital gains and marginal income amount to a little less than 10% of the total deficit.

Something like that.

That political test could use a neutral response of some type. Took it a couple of times, flipping some answers I was rather 'meh' about. Suppose it didn't make a whole lot of difference though. Both times was midway between left and right and about -4.5 to -5 (clearly in the lower part) on the Libertarian/Authoritarian axis.

Pet peeves. When are the Brits going to learn how to pronounce words properly. Keepers of the Mother Tongue, eh? Why does every word ending in "ia" or "w" get pronounced as ending in "re"? India is Indier, China is Chiner, Law is Lore, etc. I listen to the BBC on my morning drive and it drives me nuts (no pun intended).

Overlord Theophany wrote:

It is redistribution of wealth. I work hard for what I have. I'm taxed at a higher rate because I'm good at my job and because I work harder and am better educated than others.

Theo, you talk about redistribution of wealth like it's a bad thing. It's not. As long it is done in moderation. I'm not at all interested in returning to the days of Jolly Old England, when there was a nobility that kept everything it owned and passed it all on down to the heirs. In a civilized society there has to be a certain redistribution of wealth. And I assure you, my wife and I land squarely in the group that would have its wealth redistributed, so I'm not looking to take your money for myself.

I don't think anyone can argue that what's made America the country it is today, is that for a long time anyone could "make it big" if they worked hard. Today, working hard won't get you anywhere unless you have real money backing you. So, you have to win the gene lottery and be born to parents with the cash to help you through school, help you dress the part, and if you want to go into business - help you get started with that.

I still think we're better off with Obama, but it's pretty disheartening to see that they aren't that different on a lot of policies when put on a graph like that.

If they could just do whatever they think or feel is best, the result would be pretty indistinguishable. Unfortunately, you don't elect the man/woman, you elect the people they are beholden to. Romney would have gone more to the right because he would have wanted to get re-elected. Obama has a little more leeway since it is his second term, but history shows us that second term Presidents have about 18 months before they become lame duck.

So I took the test. This question makes no sense. "Sex outside marriage is usually immoral." Morality is an absolute, like pregnancy and death. So how can anything be "usually" immoral. It either is, or it isn't.

And the result of the test scared the crap out of me . . .

Other over-riding moral values where it could be acceptable or something? Okay before marriage, but cheating is bad. It's okay if he cheats on you first, it's fine if you both agree to it, etc. etc. Something like that?

But yeah, some of them were a little odd.

Sounds like a sh*tty drinking game if it makes you puke.

I've never puked from physical exercise. Not that I'm in good shape or anything, my lungs just give in before my body decides to evacuate the stomach contents. I'll be rolling around on the ground, gasping for air, feeling like someone shot me in the chest with a shotgun (not that I've ever tried it, so take the comparison lightly), coughing up phlegm (wtf kind of a word is that?) and feeling like I'm about to die. Too busy not being able to breathe to trigger the puke thing, I guess.

Yup. Guru here comes Aeth!

One of my friends just made me facepalm with a comment of hers on facebook. She's a pharmacy tech and apparently anti flu vaccine. She just made the comment: "I guess I've just never understood why we inject ourselves with something we don't want to get." Smiley: facepalm So I very nicely explained to her how vaccines work, which I'm rather astounded she seems to be ignorant of being a pharmacy tech and all. If she already knows how they work and she still doesn't get it, I'm going to have to seriously doubt her intelligence.

New avatar.

Everyone at work started calling me Archer, Sterling, or Duchess recently. Don't know whether to be offended or take it as a compliment.

I'll take it as a compliment though. Because let's face it, I'm @#%^ing awesome.

I hope she wasn't too good of a friend, because I had to question her intelligence.

"It's not ridiculous. I work with sick people all the time and I don't worry or even think about getting whatever they have....and I don't! It's all in the perspective of the mind. Just sayin"

"So many 'diseases' are caused by stress and kept in our bodies because we've been told that that is the way it is! We label the 'disease' which in our minds (because of what we've been told and now believe) can only be 'cured' a certain way....or uncurable. Done deal! Change the way we think and believe and you'd be surprised at what we can do!!"

I had to ask her about why she thought cases of polio are virtually unheard of now; if it had to do with willpower or the fact that there has been a world-wide effort to vaccinate people.

Also, some states will let anyone count pills in a pharmacy, and even the national certification doesn't require much in the way of biology or chemistry. This is from the community college I graduated from last spring. My ex was in the program, and she said there was something like a 90% pass-rate for the national certification, and a +95% job placement rate for people that complete the program.

That just makes me cringe. Smiley: oyvey And since Protein hasn't commented on it I'm going to assume he's dumbstruck.

Wow, a Pharmacy Tech. Although the few chain store Pharmacists I've spoken with in the last few years do not impress me at all. I don't know how they pass the Boards.

She posted too late in the day, I was home, likely in the shower or playing a bit of skyrim. Not dumbstruck though, I've met enough idiots in science that a clueless pharmacy seems pretty parfor the course. Speaking of skyrim though, it is turning out to be a lot like Morrowind for me. I'm on my 5th or 6th character now and trapped in a vicious cycle.

-Started stealth-archer type
-Thought cheekbones were too much, so rerolled the same character with a different face.
-Got tired of sneaking everywhere, so started a sword-n-board type.
-Found out lightning is a lot easier to use than bows; started a mage.
-Decided I liked the look of the ancient nord armor, so re-rolled the mage to wear heavy armor

Still haven't got anyone past level 30 and now I'm thinking it may be fun to play a dual-wielding character... Smiley: lol

You can always tell who the people who just got out of basic training/boot camp, including myself. I went on such a binge that the next day the combination of alcohol and exercise threw me over the edge. I don't really remember anyone being sick after exercise while in training, though I do remember vomiting near the first phase.

See, we drink a lot of water. A lot. It's simply necessary considering the environments we go to and the amount of activity we tend to do. Have to stay hydrated. So at nights there were "Hydration Formations." It's were you take a canteen of water, which is about a quart and stand there, holding it out in front of you. The instructors inspect to make sure it's full, and then everyone has to start drinking, the whole thing, while the instructors count. The longer it takes everyone to drink, the more push ups you had to do afterwards. Now, a quart of water is not a little bit, and most people simply don't start off with the capacity to drink that much at all, much less as fast as possible. So much spewing the first week (including myself) that it was hilarious.

Should just lie and say you did it, I wouldn't know any better and would probably rate you up in return. That and I usually assume everything I do brings my karma down anyway.

That sounds... painful, to be honest.

It also reminds me that I need to drink more water.

You should drink beer instead. As long as it's a beer with low ABV (5% or lower I think) it still hydrates you. Although to be honest, I'm kind of having a hard time finding great beers under 5% ABV that are readily available.

Although if I recall correctly you're at the University of Texas so you'd be in Austin regularly which means you have access to Austin Beerwork's Einhorn which clocks in at 3.5% ABV and as a Berliner Weisse will be refreshing, light and slightly sour (although it seems to only be available during the summer and likely only from the taphouse/by filling a growler).
