I don't need someone as smart as me, I just need someone who I don't think is dumb. I don't think I'm in the 99th percentile but I found engineering pretty easy, so I'm probably not stupid. Also, they probably should have a good vocabulary, because I get irritated by people who continually don't understand the words I use.

As for Khaliva's comment, I think having areas of expertise that are different it really helpful. It's nice if you can look up to your partner in something, and that makes it easier. I don't think a relationship where someone felt that they were better in most categories would be very healthy. It's also an attitude thing though, I would find that kind of thing a lot easier than when I was younger.

With the person that's up for grabs, now, we might both end up in computer science. But he has a HND (associate's) in physics (not exactly my strongest subject) and a passion for entomology (which is awesome, but I know almost nothing about it!) and classical music (which I suck at), and I'm more of a chemistry and linguistics person, apart from the computational stuff. We'd also most likely end up in different branches of computer science, but it helps that we both <3 functional programming. I think it's cool to have many interests in common, as long as there's still some grounds for learning new things from each other.

I'm not a fan of intelligence tests.

For example, I'm frustrated by my daughter's doctor. We've been through all sorts of issues with him. Okay, so my daughter got bad marks once because she didn't know how to throw a ball; nevermind the fact that we didn't have a ball at the time for her to throw. Plus it's not like she'd be doing that inside anyway (it was the middle of winter when he asked). I was like "she can walk up and down stairs without holding someone's hand, that's pretty good for a 13 month old." Of course now she has several balls, and loves them to death, so that problem is solved hopefully. I think the other one was "She doesn't point" at which point my wife's response was something along the lines of "Of course not, that's rude." There was a "does she turn on and off the light switch?" too, another thing we weren't into encouraging. *sigh*

Also giving a mother a survey about their child to fill out in a waiting room full of screaming kids, one of which is yours, is just a terrible idea. She's never going to remember what her child has done over the last 6 months. Smiley: rolleyes

Eh, tests indicate certain things. There's correlations to other things, within limits.

And my teacher in primary school thought I was mentally retarded. A month later my mum had me join a high IQ society because it turns out my teacher's assessment was wrong or something.

Also, I find this video thoroughly enjoyable, even if it's really hipster.

As for intelligence, I could date someone smarter than me or someone I'm smarter than but not a moron. Even someone with a complete lack of common sense would be a stretch.

Someone more grounded than me is a good thing though. I like having a calming influence.

See now if everyone viewed tests in such a manner life could be a whole lot easier; well for some people at least. I imagine the people reviewing college entrance exams wouldn't like it much. It's difficult to know how far to take these tests though. I could say I got similar scores on my SAT and GRE tests, and those seemed to correlate well. But similar tests are similar, and my wife would be among the first to point out cultural bias in entrance exams.

I like my IQ tests because I score highly on them, and I like talking about that because my ego needs to grow even more (always!), but I do realise that that's not everything that matters.

And Horse, I so get the "grounded" thing. Actually the biggest negative in the relationship I'm getting myself into at the moment is that we're both far too excitable and come up with the most harebrained ideas, and half the time we agree that those ideas are good. The latest one includes going to Afghanistan and Iraq... and I am far too tempted to go through with it because if I don't die or something, it will be amazing!

You might want to, like, just hit Turkey or something until the more central countries calm down. :P

Also, I just had a nice fail moment. I was waiting for my ipod to update so I could go for a run. While waiting, I laid down. I just woke up and it's 2 hours later. >.<

Careful, Kali, or your ego might outgrow your capabilities. Smiley: tongue

High self-esteem is good, until it reaches a point where you not only recognize (or believe) that you are better than most, but feel a need to make people around you aware of it as well. And I don't necessarily mean that you walk up to others and proclaim them to be idiots for not realizing what is obvious to you. You can do it indirectly by, for instance, talking about stuff above the academic level of those around you. Their inability to follow you would lead them to believe that you are doing it on purpose, to insult them. We humans are odd like that. We always assume the worst about something we do not understand.

And don't take this the wrong way. You know I heart you, Kali, but I'm Scandinavian and thus follow the Jante Law, whether I like it or not. Smiley: frown

Helps to be a New Yorker. Then the ego of being obviously better than everyone else is completely justified.

Eh, I have an alternate plan that means I avoid both Iraq and Afghanistan. It's just really not the shortest route I can take. I dunno. I'll probably do this over a year from now, I'll see how it is. I know people go on vacation there, anyway, and it's not like I'd hit up some Taliban camp and then strip down to my underwear for the lulz. Even though that would be awesome, I'd rather not do it myself.

Hah, no.

Mostly what I mean is that when I dated stupidguy, I always used to gossip about him not behind his back, but actually in front of him, and just by using a different register I could do it and he wouldn't understand what I was saying at all, apart from the fact that it was probably about him. I didn't even have to switch languages (he forbade me to speak English, anyway).

I also do it to the racist bigot pigs on the bus. :D

I did city life when I was younger. I'm still amazed I never got arrested or anything.

Its not like I live in the sticks. Plus the beaches the beaches in town suck.

I like living in a location where I don't need a car for 90% of my activities. I've got that right now so life is good.

I'm not sure that Afghanistan or Iraq would actually be all that amazing to visit, danger and stress don't actually let you experience the proper culture which is what I'd be interested. I suppose that could be seen as their culture currently.

I'm heading out to India and Bangladesh and surrounding areas for a few weeks next year. I'm looking forward to that. My sister is doing an around the world trip, so I'll be joining her for a bit.

Kali, this made me <3 you more. *high five*

I'd like to get an IQ test at some point, just out or morbid curiosity. There are a lot of intelligence markers out there that are way off and completely up to interpretation like the example protein gave with his daughter. The idea that your daughter would be developmentally challenged because you didn't teach her how to throw a ball is just ridiculous.

I don't know if I would like living in NYC. I definitely want to visit there sometime, but I don't think I'd want to live there. I like living in small cities, like the one I'm in now. There's lots of culture and tons of stuff to do, but it still has the small town feel to it that I grew up with. I think I'd live here for the rest of my life if I could get away with it, but that's not going to happen. Oregon pays their teachers crap.

You can find them online. I would recommend taking a bunch as they will vary (taking a bunch will give you an average score which would be more precise). IQ tests can be pretty biased based on demographics.

Eh, in Afghanistan I'm interested in the "middle of nowhere" areas so that should be okay, in Iraq it's... a lot of places. I don't know. Most of the interesting stuff from old Babylon is currently in my hometown, but I still want to go there.

The actual trip is going to be from at least Sofia to Mumbai. If I do it in the summer, I might make it a trip from Scotland all the way to Tibet via land. My main interest in this is the Pakistani part of the Punjab, anyway, really. I mean, I want to visit ALL THE PLACES, but that one especially.
