question as a nubling hunter.Follow

#1 May 01 2007 at 10:44 AM Rating: Decent
Im currently 29 using my Ghostsable spec MM for lvling, and i keep hearing that theres better pets to use other than a cat. I have read the Sticky and didnt find a clear indication of how a bird compares to boar/bear for tanking/leveling.

My question is this: is a bird worthwhile to have as my tanking pet vs boar or a bear?

Play the pet you want to play. It's really as simple as that. BUT, with that said you need to know what pets are better for certain things.

Birds-the flying kind- are pretty decent DPS but the main focus for players with them is the ability to grab and hold aggro on multiple targets. NOTE: grabbing and holding aggro is different from tanking.

Boars- Great all around pets that have decent DPS, decent HP and armor, but the 2 main things people love about boars... 1) Charge, this ability alone is note worthy especially in PvP as it can stop flag carriers or mounted enemies in their track because of the stun effect and allow people to gang up on em. 2) They freaking garbage disposals, they eat everything which means you don't have to constantly look for meat or something, just feed it whatever apples or cheese or whatnot you find on the mobs you kill.

Bears- The quintessential tanking pet. It's a great tank because it does good enough damage to hold the attention of what your fighting (provided you don't just unload on the enemy or get 4 crits in a row) and has a large enough HP pool to take the beating.

Turtles- Tanks, period. Highest armor rating, most HP (with no talents) and only pet with the ability to actually decrease the amount of damage it takes. Problem with turtles is their damage sucks and because of that you have to be super careful with the damage you deal out so as not to steal hate from your little turtle.

Cats/Raptors/Ravagers- I bunch these 3 together for 2 reasons. 1) Highest DPS in the game 2)essentially the same armor/ HP pool. the main differences come in the abilities each pet gets. I'm not going to get into it here, google wow petopia and get all the specifics yourself, not to be rude, but it would do you more good to check it out than me spoon feeding the info to you.

I hope this answers the question you have.

It's up to you, and how you play. Give me a pet and I'll do good with it. I did great with a ravager, got bored and moved onto a wind serpent, then went to a wolf, not sure what I'll get at 30 (when I'll pick probably my through-70 pet for dash), I'm a bit dissapointed with a wolf b/c I didn't realize the range was only 15 yards on furious howl...I may just pull my ravager out of the stable (high DPS means I can spam a bit more in solo)

Anyway most pets are pretty good, I'd choose between:
-Cat
-Ravager
-Boar
-Wind Serpent
-Scorpid
-Wolf
-Gorilla
-Turtle
-Bat
-Owl
-Carrion Bird
-Dragonhawk (past 66)
-Tallstrider

Now I think of it, I'll get a tallstrider for my hunter.

It is definitely a personal choice. Lots of people recommend boars. I don't use them. For no other reason than they don't appeal to me visually. If I'd known about the cool tattoed boar in RFK or is it RFD? I might have gone to get one. Too late now, I've no interest in leveling a 23 up to my current level.

I went with a turtle (kresh from WC) for most of my 20's and then moved to a variety of pets. Eventually I picked up a hyena in Tanaris and used him for my mid-40's to low 50's (dash kicks butt).

I now use an ember worg I got in Burning Steppes, taught him dash and I'll probably stick with him through 70. Nice thing about ember worgs? They come with built in fire resist and since you're doing a lot of stuff in BRD in your 50's it comes in mighty handy, I trained him up to +92 fire resist, shoulda named him asbestos.

Get a boar! OINK!

Check out Petopia at brashendeavors.net!

OP, I'm compelled to say that. And it is good advice. But your ghost saber is a really good pet, too. If you like it, keep it. It will serve you well.

After reading up at petopia, you'll probably realize that all pets "work" and that there isn't much difference between them.

"Way wayp wiy saah tal," whispers a friendly spirit. Don't worry, friend. The message will reach you via osmosis. Have faith!

And do go to petopia! It's a good place for us hunters!

I've never really been a fan of this whole Boar crusade, where everyone pretends that a boar is the "best pet".

A Boar IS the best pet, there is no discussion. You might wanna get a really ugly one so random people from your own faction will /spit at you in disgust over 1) you are a hunter, and 2) you have an ugly-*** pet.

If you get a boar, I swear, you will never replace him! (well you will, but only to get another pet to upgrade your boar... Muhahaha!)

I'm starting to think wind serpents pwn em all. Although for long-term DPS nothing outranks the Scorpid.

I love my cats, but I'm named after a cat too so it fits me better.

Well see thats the thing, ive read petopia, most of the posts here, and i was looking for a general answer. I use my cat for BG/Leveling at the moment. I know pets are normalized and there is no leet pets anymore.

I keep reading about Boars/Bears/Carrions. And i know i should probably have a back up pet to take with me for OT and ohh shi... moments.

I might just stick with my Ghost Saber since its never failed me.

Once you get 5 stacks on, scorpid poison has more sustained DPS than any other pet ability. They're like the warlocks of the hunter pets.

I started with a cat, then tried a bear, then tried a raptor, went back to a cat up until 47. Then I decided I wanted to try a Hyena out of the Blasted Lands. All I can say is, I love my little puppy! lol

I was having problems taking mobs 2 levels above my own with my cat, but with the Hyena it is a piece of cake. Yes yes, I know that wolves are about the same but with FH, but I don't care really. I don't do groups or anything so for me solo is king. The defense is good and he keeps hate just fine. Yes I can take hate off of him at times, but then again with any other pet also. The number one reason for me to keep my Hyena is: I like it! Number 2 is no one else uses one so I am an individual! lol

Hyenas all the way for this hunter.....at least til I like something else better.

Here's proof that your play style affects your pet too:

I thought FH had a 40-yard radius for some reason (didn't read the fine print that said 15-yard). Not being BM and not having GFtT (it'll be in my build later) I dont have the focus to spare if it's gonna generate a slight amount of threat and just give my pet the damage bonus. For groups it'd be okay, and if I played within 15 yards it'd be great, but being survival I like to play from 40 yards, so FH does me little good. If I did mostly groups, especially with a lot of rogues or other melee DPS, it'd be great, or if I did a lot of fighting within the radius of FH, but for me its not.

Stick with the ghostie if you like it - yes.

It will work for you in pve and pvp! And all points in between! (I'm not joking, it's a fine pet).

And a "general answer" is useful in what way?

I don't mean to be rude, but literally what good is a general answer.

Let me give examples: "What in general is the best kind of car for me to drive?"

"An economy car with good mileage and reasonable safety ratings."

But I have two Great Danes and six kids! See where I'm going? Sure, that's an extreme example. But again, what good is a general answer? Yeah, it sort of puts you in the right direction with the risk of drastically misleading you, right?

Way wayp wiy saah tal! Chant it 500 times, morning, noon and night, and you will see the error of your ways!

(I'll cut you some slack - pets are cool - but it's you you play your hunter that really matters - the pet is secondary to that at best)
