What is a reasonable tip to give to a rogue for opening a locked box? Does it scale with level/difficulty of lock?

In a way, yes. If you don't have a Rogue, you may not know that Lockpicking is essentially a profession that you can't drop and has a tighter cap. Most of us expect tips for something grey or green to us, being that we gain NOTHING out of it.

Overall, a tip at 20-30 should be limited to 50S, 30-40 should be at most 1G, and I have no idea after that :(

However, a tip is TOTALLY unnecessary at heart. They gain NOTHING but skillups from it at best, and we don't lose anything (not even any mats!), but we like it!

On a side not, NEVER pay a price/fee that the Rogue sets. If you want to give a tip, fine, but try and find someone who doesn't ask for cash. We're the ones who need it the most :P

My own experience differs a bit from the above reply.

First time I was asked to open a box, I guess I was lvl 25, the guy was lvl 40 or sth and I aksed for 20 silver and he did pay but still noted that it was uncommon to ask for a tip.

After that, I never again asked for a tip. Strangely enough, about a 1/3 of the chests I'm asked to open give me a skillup so I'm happy enough to open them for free. Some people tip even for opening a mere chest... others tip when they ask you to open several (one guy around lvl 50-60 gave me one gold for opening about 8 chests and I found it generous, although I don't expect that much from all). Most never tip but that's ok for me as I said. I would find it hard to first check what type of chest it is... they tell the guy "sorry buddy, it's grey/green... not opening it for free!".

In any case, the key element for me is politeness: if I get asked politely first and get a "thanks" afterwards, I'm most happy to open chests for free. If the other person lacks education, he gets flatly rejected.

I don't ask for tips or expect them at anytime. I believe in Karma, so do good things and good things happen for you. I have opened numerous chest and gotten nothing but every now and then you get that guy who give you 5g for the effort!

My ussual going rate is for the person to tell me what they got. :)

If someone asks me can I open the box for them then its no problem I will open it for free, gladly.

The worst thing about being a rogue is standing in IF have a chat with mates and some ignorant git walks up and trades you a lock box and just stands there expecting you to open, I dont know about you guys but at 5 or 6 o'clock on my server before a raid that can happen up to 30 times and gets VERY annoying, people who do this to me usually get my "/s Next time ask and I might open it for you..." macro.

I suppose you're right, a bit twisted to expect a tip when it's green.... especially since most people who have green chests are 5-10 levels below you...

I have rules for opening lockboxes for people. I am a dutiful rogue (see greedy bugger that always picks pockets) and keep up my lockpicking skill, so I never get skill ups from other peoples lockboxes, unless they catch me just after I've levelled.

1. Guildies should never give me anything to open a lockbox. In fact if they want to send me loxkboxes through the mail, I have no problems opening them and sending them back.

2. If someone messages me, asking politely, I will never turn them down, and expect nothing for it. Sometimes I like to ask what they got, because I'm curious.

3. If someone is not polite, or messages me and then opens up a trade window without waiting for me to reply, I will ask them for a tip. No tip, I will not do it.

4. If someone just opens a trade window without asking first, I will refuse. These usually occur in the bank or in the AH when I'm in the middle of something. That bugs the heck out of me.

5. When people ask in the trade channel, I will normally reply, because I can. I don't expect anything, but it's nice to get something back. I've found the most common tip to be 1g. I've gotten 20s, 50s, 1g, 2g, and 5g once. That was pretty sweet.

6. I always thank the person if they give me something.

I know it's probably a lot ado about nothing, but those are the rules I follow.

I agree with what's been said - the rogue should never set a fee, but feel free to tip. It costs us no mats, only the value of the time it takes, which isn't very much, really - we even get the thief's tools free at level 16.

I'll often put out a message in general if I'm taking downtime in a city. I'm 70, my lockpicking's maxed, so there's absolutely nothing for me in it, 'cept it's a nice thing to do. Of course, it's a quick way to make a few gold, perhaps, but I'm a big believer in retributive karma!

On a further note to this, I have found CT mail mod and CTCore addons to be invaluable when in IF etc.

Mail mod can set to auto block trades when using mailbox, and CT core can set to auto block trades when using the bank.

Threre is nothing more annoying than typing a letter or looking through your bank when someone walks up and trades you a window.

Btw you cant unlock boxes via mail, they arrived unlocked in my experience :)

Hmmm... I don't think so. I have sent locked boxes from one of my characters to my rogue and they arrived locked for my rogue to open. I don't see why they would arrive "unlocked" (that would be a cheesy way to open locked boxes, wouldn't it?).

Absolutely. Also, I think that unlocked lockboxes sent through the mail will arrived *Locked*. Not sure if it's been fixed, 'cos after the last lot of shouting for not unlocking boxes (1 is an accident, 5 is either a malicious rogue, which I'm not or a *Feature*) I now advise guildies to meet me rather than post them.

This used to be a problem, but I'm sure it's been fixed - a few guildmates have sent me boxes, returned minus lock.
