I am just curious on your thoughts about Hyena's as pets. I tamed one the other day and with 0 TP's spent, he has more armor than my Cat had with Natural armor 7! Have taught him Dash(2), Bite(5) and Growl(5) so far and am liking him so far. I need to go learn the higher bite and growl, but that will happen someday. At level 46 I was able to take out a 50 and a 48 at the same time, of course I used mend pet, and I could have never come close to this with my kitty. I don't think I have ever seen another Hunter with one, so why is this?

At work so can't pour over all the data at Petopia.

Your hyena may have more armor than your cat, but it will have less DPS. The family roles set hyena's as all-around pets, meaning more hp/ac than a cat but less dps, but also more dps than a croc, with less hp/ac. The problem with hyenas, they're basically a wolf without furious howl. FH is a good solo ability, but a great party ability: it generates a bit of AoE aggro and gives every hunter/warrior/rogue/paladin/shaman/druid (assuming the hybrids are going melee) + damage. It could affect 4-5 people, or if it's a 5-hunter group 10 people (like in a raid or BG).

If you want the armor/health, go boar or tallstrider (there are others but only those 2 can learn dash), or if you want a hyena I'd just get a wolf. Wolf = hyena + a skill, no reason not to upgrade.

A hyena is a good choice if you are looking for a fairly unique pet. A real life friend used a hyena for the majority of his hunter’s career. If you aren’t choosing your pet based on appearance, then a wolf with furious howl would be a better choice as it does come with an extra skill. But if you specifically want a hyena for a pet then go for it. Furious howl is a nice skill, but it will not make or break your character.

When you said "real life" my mind drifted... some years ago work took me to Africa. I got to go out on a "photo safari" in a very remote place, chock full of wildlife (and yes, hyenas). Man, the hyenas really did STINK. Their teeth were amazing. Some of the spoor they left behind was like concrete -- they literally can chew up and eat bones.

I remember one evening I was sitting in the Rover in the front right seat. No windows, no doors even. A hyena walked right past me. He could have easily reached in and bitten a big piece off of me. The 375 H&H mag was on the dashboard -- no way the guide could have grabbed it in time. Anyway, it was like this Hyena knew we were there, and it chose to walk right past us -- I could haver reached out and touched its back easily. It was like he was saying, "Sup, homes" -- letting us know he knew we were there, and he wasn't scared of us.

Well, enough RL nonsense. Back to what matters, WoW:

Hyenas make fine pets, but the only special they get is Dash.

If you want a somewhat unique pet or like the looks, it will do fine. But wolves have everything a hyena has plus Furious Howl! That said, Hyenas will work. And who knows? Maybe one day Blizz will show them some love and give them a special attack such as "Bone Crunch" or "Distracting Laugh" -- or a disease attack -- or "Hideous Smell!"

I would never have a Hyena as a Pet. I still have nightmares from all the times I was swarmed to death in Desolace by the two wandering hyena packs. *shudder*
That, and they are not at all aesthetically pleasing to me.

Pets I will get:

Wolf
Scorpid
Wind Serpent
Cat
Ravager
Bat (Owl if I'm BM)
Tallstrider

Other than that, I'm not interested.

If you get a hyena, you'll probably end up turning your sound down, cause they're annoying.

Different people find different things annoying. The constant growling of a crocalisk doesn’t bother me, but the non-stop chest beating and butt scratching of gorillas does. *shrugs* I rather like the sound of the hyenas. But then I like the attack sound of spiders too and a lot of people find that annoying as well.
