Bulwark of Kings - Worth it for pure tanking?Follow

#1 Apr 24 2007 at 2:22 AM Rating: Decent
I am Scryor so I can't get Vindicator's Hauberk. Instead I use

Jade-Skull Breastplate
1164 Armor
+30 Strength
+50 Stamina
Equip: Increases defense rating by 25
Equip: Increases your shield block rating by 23

OR

Breastplate of the Warbringer
Binds when picked upChest Plate
1048 Armor
+45 Stamina
Durability 135 / 135
Equip: Increases defense rating by 31.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 30.

I know Jade-Skull is better, but I really like to have the hit rating as I hate missing sunder / shield slams in the beginning when I'm starting to build aggro.

I am 2 nethers short of making this:
Bulwark of Kings
1510 Armor
+32 Strength
+51 Stamina
Blue Socket
Yellow Socket
Yellow Socket
Socket Bonus: +4 Critical Strike Rating
Equip: Improves hit rating by 20.
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 34.
Use: Temporarily Increases Health by 1500 and Strength by 150 for 15 sec.
(You have to be an armoursmith to wear this btw)

This is obviously an awesome DPS chest piece, but I am actually thinking of using it for tanking. I would either socket it with
a) 3 Solid Star of Elunes = +36 Stamina
b) 1 Solid Star of Elune and 2 Dawnstone = +12 Stamina and +16 Defense Rating (probably the one I would go for)
c) 1 Solid Star of Elune and 2 Enduring Talasites = +24 Stamina and +8 Defense Rating

The value of the breastplate for tanking is the high armor, hit rating and threat generation, especially the on use effect at the begining of a boss fight!

Do you guys think it's worth making this chest piece purely for tanking (I pvp and farm on an alt so it wouldn't be used to it's full potential for dps'ing) and if so which would you think it the best socketing option?

Hmmm I guess the lack of responses either means it was a stupid question and the answer is obvious, or other people are also unsure.

Any comments / thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I'm thinking go for it. The only thing on that piece that doesn't lend it's self to tanking is the +crit. The +hit is awesome for tanking and is quite often overlooked as a tanking stat. We still have that 5% chance to miss and overcoming that will help rage and threat gen.

So unless changing to this piece brings your defense below 490, I'd say go for it. Now the chest piece I'm using at the moment isn't good for tanking :P But I just can't seem to make the good ones drop :)

crazy armor, decent stam, 1.5% hit, 3 sockets... sounds like it could work for a tank.

Yes, do it. I am working on mine as well. My other tanking gear gives me more than enough +Def and +Shield. Prot warriors especially need some +hit and damage bonus gear while tanking.

If you can afford to spare the 25 Def, I'd say go for it.

However, if this drops you below 490 def then don't do it, as you will be regretting it the first time you take a gigantic crit and go down like a sack of bricks.

You can use the sockets to fill the gap a bit, so you'll only be 9 defense behind, while you got even more health. Block Rating is useless for Warriors. Seems like an upgrade to me for warriors.

Too bad Pallies are too reliant on Block Rating, or I could've made BS usefull for a change :/

Thanks for the replies guys, I just wanted some confirmation that I was not missing something obvious by using this chest piece for tanking! I will go ahead and get this crafted once I get the final 2 nethers.

As for defense I can get to well over 500 without a chest piece so no problem there. Only problem is I am starting to get a few items with 0 defense that I like using (Moroes pocketwatch, heroic block trinket, Argassian compass, +block ring from mechnar, +block neck from Steamvaults etc)

As for the socketing options:
a) 3 Solid Star of Elunes = +36 Stamina
b) 1 Solid Star of Elune and 2 Dawnstone = +12 Stamina and +16 Defense Rating (probably the one I would go for)
c) 1 Solid Star of Elune and 2 Enduring Talasites = +24 Stamina and +8 Defense Rating

I am actually now thinking of getting 3 Solid Star of Elunes! Having 102 Stamina on a chest piece (after enchant and gems) is just too good as I will then get to 14.25k HP unbuffed and I will have no problem getting to 490 defense with all my other items.

Socket suggestions. If your defense is above 490, go stamina all the way. If it's not, the make sure you get above 490 and use enchants to maximize your health.

If you have the mats then its worth it.

However if you are an armoursmith and are wondering whether its worth getting 8 primal mights etc. to make the breastplate of kings - then all the primal mights/nethers to make the bulwark of kings versus getting the Jadeskull Breastplate then the answer is no.

The cool down on that Increases Health by 1500 has a 30minute cool down - making it not as attractive.

Yeah the stamina is pretty good with the gems - im not going to argue with that - but its not amazingly better all up.

Very dissapointing that armoursmiths cant make an epic tanking peice.

I've already made the Breatplate of Kings as I was transmuting mights for free for guildies and my Transmute Mastery was proc'ing a lot so it was not expensive for me.

Hmm I didn't realise the cooldown was 30 mins, that really devalues the breastplate as I was looking forward to having a Crusador proc every few mins which is why I thought it was so great for aggro. But I guess I should still be able to use it for every boss fight to gain snap aggro in the beginning.

Anyway I will probably still go ahead and get this as it is a pretty awesome chest piece for when I'm farming / pvp'ing etc. And I will probably get a lot of use out of it for tanking as we only just cleared Curator in Kara.

I am in the same predicament, but I have a serious shot at nightbane's BP in the next 3 weeks or so ... so I'm opting to not tank mine up. My bulwark will retain its DPS-ness. Its an absolutely retarded PvP/DPS BP though.
