Paladins Abilities & HordeFollow

#1 Apr 19 2007 at 2:51 AM Rating: Decent
This may have come up in a previous post, but why is it most of a paladins anti-undead abilities do not work against undead horde? Sense undead, holy wrath and exorcism for example. Why if almost all spells/abilities can be used against opposite players, paladins can't user theirs? Im a lvl 51 at the moment, does this change at higher levels?

I think the Cathela may have covered this in the FAQ, but the long and short of it is because Blizzard said so. Apparently they decided that the horde undead are not the same flavor as NPC undead, so our powers are useless against them. And this remains in effect well past end-game.

From the Lore, it's because the Undead NPCs are the Scourge, the original undead that created the other undead, the PCs. The PC undead are known as the Forsaken, and broke the chains of the Lich King, therefore breaking the hold of true Undeath over them. Because they didn't originally get a choice in the matter, there's something about being able to change slightly...

But the long and short of it is: Raid of paladins in Undercity all using Holy Wrath = zerged. And we'd be able to see Rogues on the map, and exorcise them too. In PvP the scales would be tipped irrevocably and nobody would roll undead. Simple as. =P

Because Blizzard decided that it would be unbalancing to have abilities that only affect certain types of monsters also affect certain types of players. This is why spells that only affect beasts (like hibernate) can't be used on druids in their beast forms, why attacks that only affect humanoids can't be used on any players, and why every single magic using class has at least two schools of magic so that if one is put on cooldown by a silence, counterspell, or kick, you still have a fallback to work with.

Oh wait, never mind, it's just because Blizzard hates paladins.

/sarcasm off

It's a balance issue. In Beta it was possible, as well as shackling them, while they were immune to sheep, etc...

It was deemed inbalanced that two classes had so much power against a race (not a class) that they chanced it so that Forsaken related undead (All players, all NPCs related to Undercity) are considered humanoids and all Undead abilities only work against Scourge related undead.

The only plus side to this is that Anti-Undead abilities don't have to be balanced PvP wise, otherwise Exorcism and Holy Wrath were probably nerfed bigtime.

They do work against Warlock pets, btw.

Something else to consider is if undead players are considered true undead (so that your paladin abilities affect them) they'd gain rediculous advantages over several other classes. Think of all the things undead mobs are immune to like bleed damage, fear, polymorph...

People complain enough about WoTF as it is now, imagine if it was an always on ability because thats more or less what you'd get with 'true undead' players

Exorcism works on their pets. I'm not sure about Turn or Sense.

I didn't realize this until level 48.....all the wasted opportunities. lol

Sense and Turn Undead are... well, to be used against Undeads. Locks' pets are Demon, hence why only Exorcism and Holy Wrath works.
