Tanks keyboard shortcutsFollow

In the heat of the battle, it's difficult for me to watch what's happening with the fight and at the same time keep on eye on my cooldowns and be ready to pop those sunders/revenges/TCs/taunts when needed.

Especially when I lose aggro, it always takes some time to get that taunt under my mouse cursor, while I simultaneously gotta follow the mob so I'll be in range.

Also I just switched to fury spec, which I think requires more clicking than arms when soloing.

So I'm asking what kind of keyboard shortcuts do people use and have found to be working with their warriors? What should I avoid?

Is it easy to configure something like "tanking skills with alt-qweasdzxc, dps skills with ctrl-qweasdzxc"? Are there inbuilt keyboard shortcuts that I should take into consediration while configuring my own? Should I use macros, like have stance switching with just one button and some logic(or have taunt skills under one button, which then changes to battle stance + mocking blow if taunt is on cd)?

I bought a gaming pad when I first started and thats what I have used ever since. Take a look at a Nostromo. You can google your heart out on that and stroll over to your local Best Buy or something and grab one. It's been great. Definitely worth it, IMHO. I use the keyboard on my laptop for typing and some other things like viewing gear. For everything else, I use Mastercard.

My tanking buttons are set up as so:

Taunt - 1
Revenge - 2
Sunder - 3
Heroic Strike - 4
Shield Block - 5
Spell Reflect - 6
Shield Bash - Middle Mouse Click
Shield Slam - R
Devastate - F
Thunderclap - C
Intervene - V
Concussion Blow - X

I have a secondary clickable bar for shouts and cooldowns, then a tertiary bar full of Health Pots, Healthstones, Fel Blossoms, Nightmare Seeds and Last Stand and Shield Wall which my cursor seems to perpetually hover over these days.

i use a zboard fang gamepad, but basically i use wasd to move, with a and d being strafe.

q - heroic
e - shield slam
c - shield block
mousebutton4 - devastate (browser forward button)
mousebutton5 - taunt (browser back; also is charge/intercept on stance change)
revenge is bound right beneath shield block
sunder is bound right under that, spammable by my thumb.

tclap, intervene, shield bash i click on because i'm usually on the move when using them. i've been getting good at repositioning and getting tclaps off with lots of cc around.

it's kinda a mish-mash at this point, lots of remnants of when i was arms/fury and pvping mostly.

as for game pads, nostromo is nice... but i really like the added buttons of the saitek pro gamer even better.

the programming is a bit tricky... or maybe it was an isolated event... but it offers more keys in a similar layout as the keyboard. in addition, i like the smoothness/sensitiveness of the hatswitch.
i guess if you are used to it, you can actually use the hat switch for movements or else, consider it another 4 buttons for keystroke assignments.

You REALLY need to specify shortcuts in order to tank well.

I have all the numbers bound as normal to stance specific abilities (since blizzard cleanly changes these for us). However from there I also use a,q,w,e,r,t,y,h,g,f,n,b,v,c,x,z as well as shift-versions of all of those for everything else. I also have some space-saving macros which coming things like stance-swtiching and stance specific buttons. For instance I use 'r' for defensive stance, but its also taunt if I'm in defensive stance. Makes it easy to stance dance. 'e' is battle stance AND overpower. 'w' is zerker stance and zerker rage. I have 't' bound to intercept/charge/intervene ... depending on stance and current battle considitions (if Im out of combat it's charge, in combat its intervene if targettting a friend, intercept if an enemy).

I don't have too many shortcuts, but have learned to use the number buttons much more effectively. I've stopped spamming my attacks which makes it easier for me to concentrate on the mob, keep one eye on the rage bar and pop my cooldowns at the right moment. I've done a lot of practicing on lower level mobs, or mobs I know I can take fairly easily while gaining xp, so that when I'm in a difficult situation I won't freak out and start spamming or miss click items when I'm in need of them. Today I even got practice just stance dancing with a couple of groups of mobs when other players aggro'd too many at once.

i am in process of revising my UI and action keys.

aside from the standard action keys, i am seriously considering setting up a macro key that enables you to overpower, execute or HS or any other special attack in any stances...

ie: in midst of fighting in a diff stance, Overpower comes up, double tap on macro to change stance and Overpower... saves me from having to change stances and then click on overpower.

thoughts?

perhaps just for Overpower, Heroic Strike, Execute, at least...
