Easy way to fix this problem is by casting feign death. Then mobs will run back to your pet. You can finish off then. You won't get re-aggro after the first aggro.
ALL too true. However, let me share some experience with you I had in Tanaris last night.
I love my pet. My dwarf hunter has a huge black lion. It's Humar the Pridelord from the barrens. I decided to get my wife a small white kitten for her Horde shaman from Stormwind. That's gotta be the coolest "Pet" to have a teeny kitten chasing behind a 7 foot tall tauren with horns. I had to deliver the cat in Gadgetzan.
I was down in the area as a 37 Dwarf hunter waiting for the mrs. to make the run through Thousand Needles. Decided to take on some of the local beasties. They are TOUGH, but so am I.
L41 starving wolves were fun. Tried two of them. Then I tried a L42 starving wolf. No potions, and no spells. Okay, he was more than I could do and the pet was gonna die. I pulled the wolf off and proceeded to get ripped apart. The miss rate against a creature 5 levels above is horrible for an un-buffed hunter in melee. I shoulda backed off and shot some more but disengage was resisted. I was not doing any melee damage and the wolf burned through my HP really fast. It was gonna be a very close after drinking a healing potion. At the last moment, I hit feign dead at 5 percent health and the wolf resumed chewing on my pet. The wolf turned to attack and I went to work finishing it off. I wasn't gonna die and have my wife grief my Alliance coprse.
Then I got the xp message for the kill and saw 64 xp. WTF!! FD removed my xp because it wiped out the HATE on the monster. I was pissed. I did get 100% of the loot of the wolf, but the xp was gimped from FD. Still, I survived to tell the tale.
Just use FD sparingly. Using it at the END of a fight will dent your XP award.
