I'm curious about our Distracting Shot. Is it supposed to cause us to gain aggro from a mob or does it reduce it?

I thought I could use it in situations where I need to get the aggro off my pet because he was going to die and I was full health, but that didn't work.

Then I tried using it after I had plunked a few arrows into a mob on a pull hoping to reduce my aggro so the pet could get it quicker, but that didn't work either.

What the heck is it for?

Thanks!

It increases your aggro.

Problem is, from what I've seen, it's either impossible (a la EQ), or extremely hard, to pull aggro off of someone who's about to die. So if your pet's dying, best you can do is either kill the mob off, or heal him.

But if a mob suddenly aggros on your healer, a distracting shot will usually get you aggro from that mob. Or if you see your pet going down faster than you'd like, but still healthy, switch off auto-growl, hit Cower, and hit the mob with a distracting shot... it'll almost surely get you aggro.

Zatx Distracting shot is supposed to gain you aggro from the mob struck. But you have to be careful in its application.

If you've allowed your pet to tank for you most of the fight using a equal level of growl, one distracting shot will not pull the hate off of your pet. Especially if right after your shot, your pet drops another growl at the monster. If you want to pull the hate off your pet, I suggest the follow Ranged attack combo.

Arcane shot
Concussive shot
Arcane shot

At a lower level that should do enough damage as long as your pet is no longer growling.

I'm currently level 35 hunter and am a pet specialist. With all the Ranged attack abilities granted by our class, I can usual find various methods of pulling the hate off as we have a whole ******* of special instant shot attacks.

Aha! /slaps head. I forgot to take Growl off.

What is the best way to do this? Do you just click and drag it out of the pet's hotbar?

And if I have growl and cower on the hotbar together is he just chain casting both?

Thanks for the help with the n00b questions.

Just right-click growl and the glowing bar around it should disappear

Im no expert with pets but concerning your question about how to pulling aggro from you pet, i have used the "follow me" command to recall my pet. This works best in a group with others engaging the mob. I have not tried turning growl off, but i think that would help. Of course, if you are fighting solo, the mob will follow your pet to u so you will have to engage the mob by melee.

Well several levels after getting Distracting Shot I've finally find the niche' for it.

Keeping the healer alive in a group.

I've never been able to use it to pull the mob off a pet, but one shot will cause the mob beating on the healer to turn and attack me.

It's actually kind of funny when it happens. Priest yells out, "ON ME!", I turn, fire a Distracting Shot into the mob, it pauses and has that "who the hell hit me?" shocked look on it's face, turns and attacks me.

Works like a charm. =)

I dxon't even use it. Haven't found a strategic use for it yet. If pulled aggro w/o the "supposed", then i might.

I've got a question.
I'm lvl 41 and my pet isn't being a tank anymore. I send my pet in first, then used aimed shot. But after an aimed shot concussive and serpant it is alrdy attacking me. My pet is still on lvl 1 growl because i was saving for mount. Does this mean I should learn higher growl, or not used aimed shot first.

Um..the higher growls are well worth the few silver you will spend to learn them.

I hunters mark, pull with concussion, hit with serpent, hit with arcane, and then aimed shot. By the time I've finished my last shot the mob is on me. I hit the mob with my raptor strike then immediately hit Disengage and back off to finish the mob with my bow. Normally I only get in a few shots at this point because the mob is just about dead.

If you don't have the armor or melee dps and don't want all of that aggro, pull with serpent and send in pet. Let auto-shot hit the mob a few times then slap arcane and aimed shot on them. Just don't use concussion shot at all, or save it for mobs that run at low health.

As far as learning the growls, they don't even cost money! Just charm pets that have the level of growl you're looking for. Fight w that pet for a while & viola! you've got the skill.

I got growl 1 2 & 3 that way

I use Distracting Shot in Blackfathom Deep. My pet is tanking an elite something or other, and when it turns to run in fear - I don't want it to 1: go get help, 2: have my pet follow it (I know hitting 'follow me' will cause the pet to not follow it and get aggro, but.. eh.).. I've found that using distracting shot on it when it turns to run away will usually cause it to stop running away and start back towards you, usually with your pet killing it before it gets anywhere close - but at least it doesn't run away. Or worse, run through the instance swirly zone thing and die in there where you can't loot it.
