there have been a few threads written on this subject comparing the benefits of duel wield to using 2H weapon. I too am a dwarven hunter, and i use a 2H axe and i will explain why:
First off, duel wield works by taking 100% of your main hand weapon and only 50% of your off hand damage and adding them together. A penalty is also added that creates a 24% miss rate chance. SIngle wield and using 2-handers only has a 5% miss rate chance.
Second, since as a hunter, using melee weapons has only 2 real needs for me. THe first is to get the hell out of melee combat and back into range. Since the first attack for any auto-attack regardless of weapon is the same, single or 2-handed weapons doesn't matter. However, the 2-handers seem to do more damage per hit than any duel-wielded weapons of same lvl. So a little more damage is more icing on the cake.
The other factor for melee weapons that is important is the stat bonuses and i have noticed that the 2-handers offers better stats than having 2 1 handed weapons. I got much more agility with my 2h axe than having an axe and a sword or 2 axes. If i find a pair of axes or something with better stats than a 2h axe then i will switch back.
Added in edit:
In the end, i would look at stat bonus because we are ranged fighters and melee only in emergencies or sometimes in instances when there is no room to get to range^^.

That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan; retails for about one hundred nine, ninety-five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right, shop smart, shop S-Mart!
