Ok I have been playing a Rogue for a long time...about lvl 30 I got kind of bored (and a bad case of carpal tunnel from clicking so much) so I decided to try a hunter. I chose an Orc Hunter and he is working out pretty well. I plan to go mostly with Beast Mastery for Talents and role play the hunter a bit. I am very confused about which pet to stay with for the long haul. I started with the Corrupted Skorpid outside Ogrimmar mainly for looks but his AC is nice. He does pretty good. Someone said Bears rule so I have one of those too (Ferocious Grizzled Bear from Silverpine). I have also been reading Crocs and Turtles are awesome...I just cannot find a good comprehensive list of stats and DPS. So what I would like to know is this.

1. If I like to hunt solo and do groups/raids occasionally which pet would most likely fit that role best? I'm not into PvP much though I like to smack down insolent casters now and then (I know about raptors and cats for this btw).

I would prefer some practical knowledge if possible...I don't really want to do the trial and error thing. It took me forever to get both of my current pets to my level (both have claw/growl).

From my personal experience I have found that you should keep getting new pets often:

1) They teach you new higher abilities (Cower, Claw and Bite)
2) The tend to get better AC and DPS than a standard lvl 10 beast thet you took to the same level.
3) Some animals can not use all abilities you can teach them and that is why a bear is nice because it can Claw, Bite and Growl.

Of course, if you keep changing pet too often it will cost a lot to keep him happy food wise so you have to balance your choices. Also, some pets, like gorillas, eat only mushrooms or fruit which at times can be hard to find a vendor for such food.

i'm not 100% sure how the whole different pet/different stats thing goes, but i've had the same pet since level 10 *now 42* and Sabre has been doing just fine ^_^.

in order to keep her beefy i tend to put most of my talents into attribute bonuses so she's a better tank than most

in order to get her a few more abilities i stabled her, tamed some creatures, fought alongside them for a battle or 2, there-by learning their skills, dropped them, and taught them to sabre.

some people say that you can tame an elite beast, and it's a ton better in comparison to a regular beast, but i dunno first hand.

in any event, i'd just choose a pet that you think looks cool ^^.

I am actually doing that now...I really like the looks of certain creatures. I plan to tame a Deviate Coiler soon and teach it the skills I picked up from other creatures. Here is what I learned so far and anyone who knows more please correct me if this changes later on. This is only based on my experience by the way up to level 18 at this time.

Skorpid - Regular skorpid was pretty kewl...good AC/HP and decent damage

Corrupted Skorpid - Slightly better than the regular Skorpid but had no skills. I had to teach it from other animals but once I did it ate the regular Skorpid.

Savannah (Highmane and Huntress) - Nice damage...very fast hitters that mess up casters very well. A little rough on tanking abilities. They cannot take nearly as many hits as some other creatures I have tamed but I do recommend getting one and learning the skills they have to teach other pets.

Savannah Prowler - This one was very similar to the regular Savannah's above but came with no skills. Once taught (from previous animals)it again ate the normals.

Ferocious Grizzled Bear - This is a very impressive animal. Very good dmg and only slightly less better AC/HP than the corrupted skorpid (had the most AC/HP to this point). I am really liking the bear except it only starts with Claw. I just don't like the generic look but currently this is my main animal.

Giant Grizzled Bear - This is the same as the differences listed from the others above.

Sunscale Lashtails - Very nice damage and very similar to the cat but can tank slightly better. They have a kewl look as well.

Sunscale Scythemaw - Same differences as above....

Dreadmaw Crocolisk - Good AC/HPs and decent damage...can not learn claw...but not bad overall.

Corrupted Dreadmaw Crocolisk - Had no skills like the corrupted skorpid but looked much better than the regular and ate the regular of similar level once it learned skills.

Worg - Some folks suggested to try the Worg. I am not impressed except they had Bite 2....I used them to get it so my bear and croc could get it.

Mottled Worg - Still not impressed

Oasis Snapjaw - I hear great things about this creature. I am going to tame one today and see how it goes. I am thinking of keeping a Oasis Snapjaw (a high level hunter told me they are unmatched for AC/HP but their dmg leaves a lot to be desired) for heavy tanking and a Deviate Coiler for dmg groups and raids but do not have much experience with them yet.

The only thing that really gets me is that say you have a bear. You get to teach it growl because you learn that from the guild. It comes with Claw which it progresses with as it levels up. Then you teach it bite from another beast you have tamed but it never progresses. This really sux. It means you absolutely have to have two animals that compliment each other or you will be taming a lot of shizz to teach progressive skills. I guess in a way it makes sense but in a way it doesn't. I would think once something learned basic bite it would be able to get better at it with use but I have found that not to be true. Anyway these are all things I learned on my own and there will be more to come as I learn more.
