Talents - discussionFollow

I've been wondering what other Mages specialize in, or how they distribute there talent points. Right now. Arcane seems to be weaker as far as damage dealing goes, but also provides global effects for your spells.

Please post intellegently. If you are going to state your opinion, please give a why. Thank you.

Thanks again in advance.

I have nothing intelligent to say at this point, but I'm watching this thread to see what others think. I was wondering this myself.

Generally speaking here. .

The Arcane line focuses on enhancing the efficiency of your existing spells, with things like Clearcasting states and making spells Instacast. The Evocation and Arcane Mind talents do great things to your mana pool.

The fire line is great at dealing damage, and doing it fast. It teaches you Pyroblast, a high-damage nuke. This is an upgrade to Fireball, but because of it's long cast time, it's an upgrade strictly in terms of damage. If you decide to go deep into the fire tree, you'll learn Combustion, which lets you literally choose your next crit. Combined with the other crit talents found in the fire tree, you can land a huge nuke on a mob. At will.

Lastly (but not least, imo) the Frost line lends some powerful defense if you decide to delve deeply into it (Ice Block, Ice Barrier are invaluable buffs). Many of the effects focus on slowing or frustrating your attackers, and less on dealing lots of damage to them quickly. But there's some powerful damage to be had here as well. The Shatter talent increases the frequency in which frost spell crit against frozen mobs Ñ combined with Ice Shards, Frostbite, Improved Frost Nova (and Improved Cone of Cold to some extent), you could be looking at some serious combo damage in a very short period of time. However, because the real damage capacity of the Frost line doesn't really appear until late in the tree, it may be a poor choice for low level mages who want to see damage improvements right away. For many of the first points, the frost line is strictly defensive.

Hey. Ive done alot of reading about the talents, and I have decided on a less agressive, more mana efficient Mage, with upgraded frost spells (Frost Nova, Blizzard, etc.), both of which are incredibly helping in PvP, and using Arcane talents to improve damage output and mana efficiency. I also took the time to type out a list of every talent and the number of points that can be applied to it.

Fire Talents
Improved Fireball (0/5)
Impact (0/5)
Ignite (0/5)
Improved Fireblast (0/5)
Flame throwing (0/2)
Incinerate (0/2)
Pyro blast (0/1)
Improved Flamestrike (0/3)
Burning Soul (0/3)
Improved Scorch (0/5)
Improved Fire Ward (0/2)
Critical Mass (0/3)
Blast Wave (0/1)
Fire Power (0/5)
Combustion (0/1)

0/51

Frost Talents

Improved Frostbolt (0/5)
Permafrost(0/5)
Ice Shards(5/5)
Winters Chill (0/3)
Improved Frost Nova (2/2)
Piercing Ice (3/3)
Cold Snap (1/1)
Improved Blizzard (3/3)
Arctic Reach (2/2)
Frost Channeling (3/3)
Shatter (0/5)
Improved Frost Ward (0/1)
Ice Block (1/1)
Cone of Cold (0/3)
Frostbite (0/5)
Ice Barrier (1/1)

21/51

Arcane Talents

Arcane Subtlety (1/3)
Arcane Focus (0/5)
Improved Arcane Missles (5/5)
Wand Specialization (5/5)
Arcane Concentration (0/5)
Improved Dampen Magic (0/1)
Improved Arcane Explosion (0/5)
Evocation (1/1)
Improved Mana Shield (2/2)
Improved Counterspell (2/2)
Arcane Meditation (5/5)
Presence of Mind (1/1)
Arcane Mind (4/4)
Arcane Instability (3/3)
Arcane Power (1/1)

30 / 51

Total - 51/51

Arcane seems to me to be very important for getting more out of all your spells ingeneral, and also increasing your Melee DPS output. More important, it gives you your second most mana efficient spell (Arcane Missle, also most powerful after the 3-5 second DoT) huge increases. Also, I personally prefer Ice to Fire, however I think those two are interchangable, I think Fire is better as a DD in party situations, and Ice is better in PvP (Frost Nova is slightly broken.)

Comments, Critism? No flames please.

Thanks.

overall you have some good ideas, but there's one major flaw in your talent distribution. you have no tier one frost talents. that's five points you have to remove somewhere in order to get the higher tiered talents. time for the tough choices...

Yeah talents wise, most mages will be going either Arcane/Fire or Arcane/Frost.

Depending on which mage you would like to be, a offensive mage or a defensive mage. Up to you and your play style.

Is Arcane really that vital? Is it just spells like Mana Shield that make it an obvious choice, or is there more too it?

The main skills that people want from the arcane tree are Improved Arcane Explosion and Evocation. With 5 points in IAE casting time is reduced buy 1.5sec, making ALL ranks of this skill instant cast. The damage might not be much, but an instant AOE with no cooldown is very useful in many situations. Evocation makes mana regenreration active at 1500% for 8 seconds. Last night I was regenerating about 15 mana per second. At 1500% for 8 seconds that's 1800 mana total, DURING battle. I'd say that these two skills are well worth 16 points in this tree. Anything else above that, improved counterspell and improved mana shield, are of debatable usefulness.

It requires 30 points to get Arcane Power, AP is the 31st point in Arcane...

Use this link to build your tree.

Many talents require a certain amount of talent points, you can't just pick and choose.
