Well in FFXI, Dual Wield meant you could equip two 1 handed weapons, and attack with them both. Equipping two 2 handed weapons would defy the laws of Physics technically.

Also, you eventually got Dual Wield upgrades over time, making Dual Wielded weapons attack faster. For example, you would attack faster using 2 swords with Dual Wield 2, than just using 1 sword and a shield.

If it they just doubled the delay for Dual Wielded weapons, it would be kind of redundant, and you would probably get more from using a shield for the defense.

Of course, I do not know much about WoW yet, but this is the best I can come up with. Hope it helps ^^.

ok first there are 3 types of weapons.
2 handed
1 handed
main hand

what dual weild allows you to do is equip a 1 handed weapon in your off hand. a 1 handed weapon is diffrent to a main handed weapon and a main handed weapon cannot be equiped in the off hand.

They each attack at there normal speed seperatly. the weapon in the off hand does 1/2 damage though.

Then what's the point of dual wielding? Wouldn't you do more damage just using one weapon then?

In FFXI, you would wait for dual wield II which gave 15% on both weapons, thus making it to your advantage to dual wield. But why would you in this game?

No i mean the attack timers is seperate.
In FFXI they add the speed of the weapons together to get your attack speed. then every attack u attack once with each weapon.

In WoW you attack at exactly the same speed as you would with one wepapon. e.g 1 dagger attack speed 1 second, dual weilded with a sword attack speed 3 seconds.

the dagger attackes every second. and the sword attacks every 3 seconds. there is no addtionl penalty to dual weild other than the 50% damage decrease on the off hand weapon.

There are actually 4 classifications of weapons
2 handed
1 handed
main hand
off-hand

1 handed and off-hand can be equipped in off-hand. 1 handed and main hand can be equipped in main hand.

In the beginning it does make more sense to use a sheild or a two handed weapon as there is more damage bennifit or defense bennifit at the lower levels. However at higher levels, beginning in the 20's even, it's better to duel wield if you want to focus on dealing damage. For example at around level 30 you can usually get a good two handed weapon that will do around 27-29 dps. However you can get a main handed weapon that can do 23-24 for a fairly cheap price. If you combine this with an off-hand that does 20-21 dps then your total damage is 33-35 dps, thus you gain 6-8 dps by duel wielding. However, you do take a disadvantage of having a higher miss rate which kind of balances this out. So from what I've been able to find so far there isn't a *huge* difference between doing a two handed weapon or doing duel wields if you are going for damage, it's just a matter of preference.

However if you are going to be a tank in a large party then it's probably best to go for a good main hand weapon with a strong shield in your off hand. This will limit the damage done to you and let you hold the mobs off of the casters in your party who can inflict the real damage on lots of them.
