My school uses an internal database consisting of tons of web sources, ALL previously submitted student papers, books, etc. And it looks at 2 things, from what I can tell:
1. Word strings, to detect copy/pasting.
2. Word content of sentences.
It'll take very, very intensive editing to disguise even your own paper from the filter.
I've actually only ever resubmitted a paper once, in high school. In my AP History class, the AP test was supposed to count for my final. After that, we weren't going to get tests or quizzes anymore, but just do some "fun" history lessons in class.
But my teacher got pregnant (and then her contract wasn't renewed) so we had a sub by that point. She decided that she was going to assign a final project, despite the fact that the course was designed for students to invest the bulk of their time before the AP test to excuse the lack of work afterwards. Naturally, we were pissed.
I had done a research paper for an English class about a specific aspect of the Civil Rights Movement. I retitled it, changed the heading, and handed it in. Got an A+ on it two times. :P
Because of the fact that I shouldn't have even had to do the second assignment, I wasn't guilty at all.
Plus, the substitute was dumb as rocks. She tried to argue with us that Ireland was south of France (literally).
